Title: back up problem
Post by: tim119 on February 15, 2014, 10:22:19 AM
hi all. im new here. i've been wrecking my brain to try to restore my wallets with my backup.dat files for the past day or two. stumbled across this site and know you guys can help me.

i had to refresh my comp recently, and when i opened my wallet after this, it is now empty.

im using litecoinqt and bitcoinqt, and im on windows 8.

i have my wallets backed up. ive tried to follow this http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/10974/import-wallet-dat-into-a-new-bitcoin-qt-client?lq=1 to no avail.

when i go to program files (x86) there is no bitcoin there. so in the folder that i use to open my wallet, i tried the right click method described in that link, but there is no option for "open command window here"

im sure it is something so simple im doing wrong. any help/advise would be great.

:)

It's in %APPDATA%\Bitcoin

To open command window, hold shift then right click

He could not see folders if hidden. Roamingdata folder is hid by default.

hi guys thanks for the reply.

i found %appdata% - roaming etc. but im not sure how many, if any, .dat files to delete from this, before i drag in my backup file, and do a rescan.

i have tried a few methods, and every time i end up with the same result, all the .dat files have re-appeared, along with my backup file, and i have 0.00 btc/ltc.

my method is... close bitcoin/litecoin-qt, go to %appdata%, delete .dat files, drop backup.dat file in, and start with rescan.

thanks again. i hope you can put me right. Tim.

it's wallet.dat file

Main folder like : C:\Users\R05L1N\AppData\Roaming\BitcoinQt\wallet.dat <- and when you put your old one into it you must name it wallet.dat too to replace existing one.

The site tells you exactly what to do. It never said delete anything else.

%APPDATA%\Bitcoin

In that folder, there should be a wallet.dat file.

If you have currently no bitcoins in your wallet, you can just delete that file and replace it with your backup.

Yep :) Never delete wallet.dat when some coins on it :) that would be bad...
