Title: Moderators for alt. currencies subforum
Post by: JohnDoe on October 03, 2011, 05:32:03 PM
I assume global moderators don't frequent this subforum often so how about some local mods? Here's a few examples of trash threads that don't belong there:

Other than that first thread where the subject had nothing to do with thread (I went ahead and renamed it), I don't see anything wrong.

While I can't speak for Theymos, if we did have a mod there, it would have to be one that's neutral to all currencies in addition to all the regular moderator requirements. So far, I haven't seen anyone who meets both of those. However, I haven't looked very hard.

If you (or anyone reading this) want to be a local moderator for that forum, report posts that you would have done something to had you been a moderator. Most likely, you'll report too many posts and be denied. So, instead, only report posts that you know violate the forum guidelines. If you find yourself not able to find many posts to report, you're doing things right. No moderator goes looking for posts to delete, we just come across them. It is also rare that we ever delete anything. Hell, I haven't deleted anything in a few days.

What do you see wrong with those threads?  What actions would you take?

The first thread is baseless FUD by an insecure Bitcoin holder.
The second is pure attention whoring.
The third is spam.

Course of action I would take is deletion for all 3.

1 - Sounds like reasonable advice to me.
2 - There's something wrong with wanting to test a fix for a blockchain?
3 - The third is poking fun at one of the newer blockchains.

I mean I know you guys are biased towards Bitcoin, but seriously...

Someone posted a thread about an alternate blockchain in the alternate blockchain subforum?  The bastards!

Also I've reported you for racism, I should be a mod.

Guys, there's no denying that the traffic to this forum has been in steady decline since June and I think it's fair to say that the high noise-to-signal ratio is partially responsible. So why not use the alt. currencies forum as a guinea pig to test if the iron fist approach makes it more enjoyable to read? You don't lose anything by trying since this is the forum you care about the least.

"Hey guys! The bitcoin people are so insecure about their blockchain that they feel the need to censor alt currency discussions more than bitcoin discussions on their forum!"
Yeah... That'll go over well...

Did you really just compare that thread to child porn?

Did you really just compare us to 4chan?

I suggest you leave the threads because some of them really are comedy gold which is priceless ;D. Seriously, this forum should have a comedy tax implemented. Some people / threads are just too damn funny. My coworkers look weird at me when I am reading the forums and suddenly burst in laughter. Laissez-faire is the best approach not deletion and censorship. I though we were supposed to "stick it to the man" and speak our mind freely around here, no ?

So you're all for free speech, until you don't like it, then the threads should be deleted, and any dissenters silenced.

heh, the first thread was started by me.
thank you for bumping it regularly.

It is true that there is a lot of noise in the let's rip off the newbies alternative cryptocurrencies subforum.
I found that the best thing to do is to just ignore this subforum.

It's a shame that mods refuse to acknowledge the failings of this forum and try to improve it.
On the contrary, I acknowledge the failings of our moderation very well. For example, I very badly want to delete Gerken's post above. However, when you start moderating like that, you add the human element to the equation. Pretty quickly, you start moderating with your opinion. You could very easily start deleting discussions that would have ended up being quite important.

This forum is designed to be anti-groupthink. While groupthink has its place, it's the last thing we want to encourage in a revolutionary currency still on the bleeding edge. Speaking of Bitcoin, that brings up a good analogy:

Much like cash is the base form of money, Bitcoin is also a base form of money. Things can be layered on top of it to make it more suitable for a general audience, but you need that base. On the internet, cash can't be transferred directly. You need to use a layered version of cash: credit cards. However, credit cards suck for the merchants. Bitcoin fixes this by making its base form of currency exist on the internet itself, allowing things to be layered on top of it, but not requiring it. If you're following, you probably know where I'm going with this. Without a base form of a place to discuss Bitcoin that isn't censored, you would get stuck using a layer where you might never get heard. Bitcointalk hosts the base of all Bitcoin discussions, allowing information to flow on to the higher, more moderated layers, like StackExchange. In that way, I suppose that you could call us the 4chan of Bitcoin. Try imagining how dull the internet would be if it weren't for 4chan.
