Title: House of Cards BTC
Post by: vpitcher07 on February 15, 2014, 07:37:14 PM
Just finished Episode 2 of season 2 of house of cards and "Bitcoin laundering" was mentioned in the episode. It's pretty crazy how far Bitcoin has come for it to be mentioned in TV shows now.

edit: Typo

it's called product placement, don't think its coin-cidental

The question is what is the % of mentions positive vs. negative?  I'd say the vast majority are negative ($ laundering, drug sales etc.)

I see what you did there, but who's paying them exactly?

Likely the same people so many are complaining about in these forums, the people who know the value of having Bitcoin in the conversation.

The whole CC industry is so full of hype, I'm surprised it wasn't seen for what it is -- just more hype.

When the Feds sell btc it seized that will make history, if headline reads: 'UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT SELLS BITCOINS' in any national publication make sure to buy many copies. then buckle your seat belts because the btc rocket will take off yet again traveling at hype-rdrive

see, that's Product Placement working with great precision

perhaps before the show when you mentioned btc it sounded like: blah, blah, blah, blah, to her,
but now after it was mentioned on TV, now it sounds like: Bitcoin BLAH Blah something real .
IOW, progress

Are you saying there's a conspiracy?

only in the most technical sense of the word, but otherwise no.

I'm saying whenever you hear or see bitcoin involved in any show it's simply a sophisticated advertisement FOR bitcoin, regardless of if the reference appears to be bad or good.

as for the feds, that's a chicken dinner -- "winner, winner, chicken dinner!"  buy those newspapers or mags and sell them for substantially more than purchase price if the headline is just right, on a widely read paper ie: NYT.

Just started to watch season 1 of this show, really getting into it!  Nice to see the bitcoin mention, even if it's for something negative like laundering.

Not clear why you think that headline would pull collector interest in the future.  Can you clarify?
Newspaper headlines that tend to pull a lot of investor / collector interest and actually go for something worth mentioning, are the epic ones.
Like for example an original copy of "The Times" front page article mentioned by Satoshi in the first blockchain transaction.

I guess they were just trying to portray it as the seedy currency of the darknet which was relevant to the story, and I guess it is true technically. I'm sure we'll get some positive coverage in the near future on TV programs as Bitcoin is already moving away from that image.

I think this is probably one of the most popular shows that has mentioned BTC, receiving many many nominations.  |Great to see regardless if its positive or negative!

A few slight and shady mentions on TV shows isn't exactly going mainstream lol. Massive merchants accepting Bitcoin is going mainstream.

I think a good way to look at it is this: Bad publicity is ALWAYS better than no publicity. I hate to say it but look at someone like Justin Beiber. He's hated by a shit load of people yet he has more money than all of us combined (most likely).

I mentioned this on Jan 5 2014... I'd been talking about bitcoin and house of cards for months now..

House of Cards would be a great venue. All it takes it a Bitmillionaire to pay someone over at Netflix or the director.

The question is what is the % of mentions positive vs. negative?  I'd say the vast majority are negative ($ laundering, drug sales etc.)

I'm with Phinneas Taylor Barnum on this one. Especially in the early stages. There is no such thing as negative publicity.

They only mentioned it the once and with nefarious and sinister connotations.

Seems like you have this guy to thank for the inclusion: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/feb/18/house-of-cards-season-two-hacker-gregg-housh

Just finished the entire season...sucks that it will probably be another year before there is another episode.   Double edged sword having the whole season drop on 1 day.   I like being able to watch the shows back to back, but you can get through it all in a few days, and then there is too much waiting!
