Ask other users about the person you are buying from. This will help you stay safe, hopefully. You can also hire an escrow if necessary.

People will usually trade Amazon/Newegg GCs on #bitcoin-otc if you ask, and there you'll have a rating system to make sure the person is not a scammer.
