Title: PSU fan directions seem wrong
Post by: Steamtyme on July 23, 2018, 12:21:08 AM
For the first time I'm using 1600W psu's.

I have I a sorcerer from Canaan, and 1 APW3++

When I hook them up the fan starts drawing air in and exhausting where the output power cables are.

Maybe I'm wrong in this but that seems backwards, because they are essentially going to feed the psu exhaust to the miner, because of the cable length limitations.

If I'm right and both psu's are exhausting wrong, what could be the cause...besides having 2 with backward fans.

I am running them on a 220v circuit. I've ever run into this issue in that circuit with my 2400w psu's.

What PSU specifically are you using?

My PSUs all have exhaust fans. Typically exhausting upward from the fan out the top of the PSU. I would agree an intake fan would appear backwards.

The APW3+ suck are in on the power plug side and exhaust on the power connector side.  So yeah, for most installations they vent hot air in the direction of the S9 intake fan.  Not a great design.

I have one of each. I just tried the second one, to compare airflow direction.

Intake/forced air does seem weird, but I'll figure it out.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Top exhaust means ATX-style PSU's which are an entirely different beast.
The brick-style server PSU's all have fans on the end and AFAIK only the HP DP-series and Dell PSU's have the air coming out the fans. All Bitmain PSU's exhaust out the 12V output end as do the Soccerer's. Not the best idea for miners but then again the PSU's put out very little heat so is mostly a moot point.

Definitely not what I expected, just means I have some tinkering to do with my setup. I mostly don't like the fact that between the connector cables and the PSU position it was restricting airflow, as I tried to position it in a way that didn't exhaust right into the miner.

I might just keep them as spares and try picking up a couple more of the 2400-2880 PSU's.

I assumed my APW3's were the same as my ATX's with an exhaust fan.  Apparently I've never actually felt to see if they were intake fans.  :-[
