Title: The Bitcoin Weekly Comes Alive
Post by: kiba on March 21, 2011, 04:28:53 AM
The Bitcoin Weekly is now ready for operation, with the barest absolute minimum features I can possibly code. So, please don't abuse the site when you visit the site.

http://bitcoinweekly.com

For the first article to be published on this new site, we have Theodore Minick's final and last article on the subject of Agorism in bitcoin:

http://bitcoinweekly.com/articles/the-state-of-the-counter-economy

Congradulations, you have your simple interface, real nice.

You might import some of the older articles from the previus site over, that will fill things out a bit.

I must say you've really kept up with this.

I am no longer burdened by an overly complex interface.  ;D

Now, I can powerfully manipulate the site whereas before I feel very weak and limited by the complexity.

If I want to submit an article, what formatting options do I have?

Is it just plain html? I'm cool with that. bold/italic, 2 header sizes and 'display: block' images.

Good site. Perfect and simple.

Markdown is the formatting of choice. Site is very simple because there was no time for evolution, but I'll try to keep it fast.

I like the simplicity, although few things I would change:

1. Too much space between lines.
2. It needs colours or at least shades of grey. Doesn't have to be extreme, but some faint cream or smth like that behind the text would be easier on the eye.
3. Use dark grey for the text to improve readability.
4. You need a logo

From functionality point of view, I would ad "Back to top" at the bottom of every article and "Go back to articles" at the top of every article. The latter should get you back to the place on the page where you were before entering the article - not the top of the page.

That's all I can think of right now

I like current simplicity so much that I'll share my disagreement:

1. OK for me
2. Please don't
3. Black on white is what I'm used to, and I would say this kind of a well tested configuration...
4. why?
5. "Back to top"? Seriously why people add these links on pages? I never ever click them.  There is this "home" button on your keyboard, and you can shift+click on the scrollbar also.

I can't imagine a logo that would go well with the current site.

It all depends what the target audience is, I guess.
To read articles at your site kiba, it will probably be next to impossible for people like me, who mostly use computers at night.

One more thing - the title of the page should be centred. I think your "Home" and "Submission" buttons pushed it to the right

That's not very helpful. Can you explain why?

The only reason why the site is very plain is because I can't afford a few hundred bitcoin in hiring a website designer.

Sure, essentially, there is just too much space with "nothing" that seems like there should be something there. I know thats not specific either, but it's just something I notice,I can say a few things that bother me that I can point out.
  • Submission is capitalized, so should "home".
  • "Bitcoin Weekly" text seems off center
  • I feel the advertisement box should extend to the ends of the box it is contained in, since that space is not really doing anything. However the box on the bottom for the license seems fine.
  • Move the 'By: author" to after the article short description, it helps form a separation that makes reading though it easier to read. Another option is to give each box a slight shade or color, but thats not what your going for, and thats fine.
  • I would like to see dates for each article, it's just something nice to have
  • Since you have a div to contain your content, making that div's background or the body background slightly off-white would improve looks and give a place for the eyes to draw attention to more naturally.

Simple is great, but when you do simple, the little things matter more.

If you agree on those, most of them are a pretty basic fix. And I'll help do them for free if you let me, and give basic help for whatever. No strings attached, I like the warm fuzzy feeling, and it wouldn't take long.

I'm not a professional, I have taken a webdesign class and passed with an A. And I like programming. I have a few examples of what I have done, if you want to see them first.

Jamezmcclain@gmail.com if your interested. I can't help today, but probably sometime during this week.

Kiba,

Here is something I'd like to see.

Since I don't have as much time as I used to for reading the forum, I'd be interested in seeing a weekly summary of notable / worth reading  threads.

eg:

New This Week:

Todays difficulty increase to 156000, where from here?
Lots of speculation about speculation and how high the price is likely to go.

So I told Bruce Schneier about Bitcoin..
cuddlefish assumes Bruce Schneier reads his own blog comments.

Updates:

The Bitcoin Weekly Comes Alive
Insti asks for article with cliffs notes on forum posts.
   Lots of +1's / me too's follow.
Kiba says he's happy to post something like this and will pay the author 0.5 bitcoins for the article.
No-one actually steps forward to write anything.

Gavin will visit the CIA
Arguments about the likelyhood of various conspiracy theories continue.

Just like the smallest seed, bitcoinweekly started off as a pdf then a crappy drupal site, with a few articles, and look at it now, how has it grown.

Good job kiba.

The homebrewed CMS still doesn't have all its bell and whistles of that god damn Durpal site.  However, bitcoinweekly is starting to evolve its own characteristics, in accordance to my business strategy. Plus, bitcoinweekly is still the number one source for funding of public domain content. That accomplishment is something I am very proud of.

Not even the Bitcoin Sun dared to follow my path.

New article.

I will be building in the shareholder voting tomorrow(it's not there just yet), so until then no voting. Also a slightly related point to the article, that although glbse allows decentralisation of capital and business ownership, the system itself is very centralised(bad thing) and it is something that we will try to move away from in the future.

I surpassed the 25 articles milestone. Right now, it's 27.

That mean that the Bitcoin Weekly successfully published 27 articles into the public domain. We're still the largest public domain source in the bitcoin universe and we're planning to publish more.

That doesn't mean much when you're the only business that actually does this.  :D

Ladies and gentlemen, I am working on the Bitcoin Weekly business database. It's still in early development.

What I hope the database will become:

This database will track data such as "dead" or "alive", stories that mention said business, related bitcoinweekly articles, who owns it, reviews, and much more. It will also contain disqus discussion thread about said business.

Here is our first business entry:

http://bitcoinweekly.com/businesses shows all the businesses currently in the bitcoinweekly database. In each business profile, there is a discussion thread for that particular profile.

It's still in early development so it isn't that useful yet.

I don't think it really powersoff the machine as it's a vps, you can probably connect with vnc directly to the console output.

Failing that contact your admins.

I made two minor improvement to the comic navigation system:

1. Made it bigger for people to see.
2. Place them on both the top and bottom of the comic.

Suffice to say, the navigation system still needs lot of work. There should be a way to get a list of all the comics ever published and the navigation button still needs to be more noticeable, for example.
