UPDATE #3: In the case that we do not receive pre-orders for all 100 PLATINUM coins, we may decide to reduce the total number of coins minted. For instance, if we only receive pre-orders for 75 coins, then we may only mint 75 coins. This will reduce unnecessary production costs, while increasing the rarity of the mintage (for those of you who may be investing on future resale values). However, if we reach 100 pre-orders, then this is a non-issue. We should have a final production number by the end of the week.

1. PLATINUM has arrived!

2. Shipping starts soon. We’re just waiting on the custom display boxes which are scheduled to arrive in about 2 weeks. Then it’s time to pack and ship!

3. We added a little surprise to this production run. As stated previously, we minted 70 PLATINUM coins in total. While the majority of these coins were minted in our usual coin-flip orientation (also called “coin alignment” where the reverse side is minted upside-down), we decided to mint a limited number of these special coins in the rarer book-turn orientation (also called “medal/medallion alignment” where the reverse side is NOT minted upside-down and is in the same orientation as the front side, like turning pages in a book). Out of all 70 coins, only 10 were minted in the rarer book-turn orientation, while the remaining 60 were minted in our standard coin-flip orientation. All PLATINUM coins will be distributed randomly among the outgoing orders. That means that some lucky customers will receive 1 (or possibly more) of the rarer variation as a fun surprise!

4. There are still 7 coins available for sale while supplies last.

5. Once the custom boxes arrive, we will begin shipping, and the pre-order price is subject to change. (In other words, don’t wait until the last minute!)

Consider my heart, broken. Maybe with the gold release you could set one (or a few) aside beforehand; throw a dog a bone, as it were. If I'm lucky, the sooner you get these platinum coins shipped out the sooner I will see one up for raffle in the secondary market. Fingers crossed. I'll make sure to have some coin ready for the Gold Pre-Orders (I didn't miss them, did I?).

I am positive that at least a few of the PLATINUM coins will hit the secondary market very soon.



We will ANN the 2019 GOLD pre-order in just a few short weeks. The mint suggests that we start the minting process on November 1st (or thereabouts) in order to guarantee a January 1st (or thereabouts) release. That means paying the mint in full by November 1st. If we start accepting pre-orders in the last week of October, that should give us enough time for all the pre-order payments to trickle in and to change those crypto funds into cash for the mint by the November 1st deadline.

Personally, I'd like to wait a little while longer. I love the tradition of starting the New Year with a shiny GOLD coin! However, I dislike releasing two precious metal coins (PLATINUM and GOLD) so close together, so we may postpone the GOLD release for a little longer. Just a thought for now. We'll wait until we ship out all that beautiful PLATINUM before we make the official call on a GOLD release date.

Next year, we'll make sure to keep the precious metal release dates spread out more evenly.

well, since you've said you made the first one. Give us info on mintage, price, pics, and other details. A private sale doesn't count as collectible. I'm sure someone out there has made the precious metal coins of crypto for themselves way before this but it just doesn't count.

I must apologize for the late reply. We're at the World Crypto Con in Las Vegas, and it's crazy busy. (But super fun with lots of good friends!)



We hand-delivered several Platinum coins to friends here in Vegas, and so far, I know of one person who found a lucky book-turn orientation coin. (Congratulations again!)

Erm... so how does this happen? Are those book-turn coins created on purpose?
Not even sure if I get the term correctly, does it mean the coin will be on the right side, if I just turn it like I would a book page instead of flipping it via the horizontal axis by 180° (which should be the default)?

Haven't received mine yet, but I'm sure it will arrive soon.

The "Default" way a coin should flip is like a real US penny, IE, not book page but flip it over by the top etc...

The "book-turn" coins were the rarer ones, so if you spin it sideways it's always right side up if that makes sense.

See the op for the distribution numbers and methods, but I believe it was random ....

A general question: Which way do you prefer to handle a coin? Personally I always thought that book-turn is the more natural way to handle a coin, just wondering.

Since I'm older, I guess I prefer the USA penny style, but I don't let it bother me anymore if not. In crypto, it can be either I've found in general....

I agree with you.  Book-turn seems more natural and is my preference.  Depending on the minting process, creators may or may not be able to control this.  While searching for the right mint for your project, this is a good question to ask along with whether or not you are able to take possession of the dies after production is complete.

Unfortunately, this is an unforeseen side effect of our idea to mint a few rarer "error" coins. :'(

We thought that our customers might enjoy the thrill of a chance to discover a slightly rarer coin in their orders. However, everyone wants the rarest coin, so the customers may feel disappointed when all they receive is a very fine platinum coin. And I certainly understand this reaction. It's natural.

So before we start the minting process on our upcoming gold coins, we'll give this idea a little more thought. Perhaps we shouldn't mint a few special "error" coins. ???


For the platinum coins, yes. The platinum "error" coins were made on purpose, which is why we write the word "error" in quotation marks. We've had two other error coins in our main line of copper coins, and those were true error coins — accidental errors in the minting process.

(EDIT: Perhaps we should stop calling them "error" coins to avoid confusion. Maybe "alternative alignment" or something like that would be more appropriate. I'll think on it. Thanks for bringing this up.)

As for preference of book-turn vs coin-flip, I've always preferred coin-flip. It's what I'm most used to, since it's how all our US coins are minted.

     I for one am (clearly) VERY happy that you made some. Some kinda chance is better than NONE at all. It's a fantastic idea. I didn't know that there were other "error" coins....could you please elaborate? I ask because I have some other coppers and wasn't aware of the others.  ???  I am stoked, going to throw all my bit pennies on my desk and begin my treasure hunt!!! :D

In summary, there are 3 true error coins — 2015 CJB, 2016 DAVE, and (technically) 2016 SN. (All the 2016 SN coins were accidentally minted in the error orientation, so there aren't any non-errors of that one.)
