Title: [ANN] ORCACOIN Helping Ocean Conservation - Coin Now IN ITS SECOND YEAR!
Post by: orcacoin on February 19, 2014, 11:10:55 PM
ORCACOIN
NEW CRYPTOCURRENCY WITH OCEAN CONSERVATION AT ITS HEART

Orcacoin - A coin for ocean lovers!  A coin made by the community, for the community.

This is a new and valuable resource for ocean enthusiasts - and a fantastic technology!   The future is being built now and the people are in charge.  Be a part of this exciting new project.  Mine the coin, use the coin.

                                                  1.    Make coins using your computer (known as mining for coins)
                                                  2.    Trade coins with each other across the globe - quickly and for free
                                                  3.    Donate to ocean conservation - if you want (we hope you will)
                                                  4.    Everyone keeps track of the coins (open-source and peer-to-peer system)

Orcacoin now listed on www.cryptocoinrank.com.

Orcacoin has been engineered to be one of the fastest, most secure and stable cryptocurrencies available.  It was launched with a strong and secure blockchain which continues to grow and strengthen. Orcacoin has been designed for global mining and trading with the latest cryptology. It offers faster transaction times than both Bitcoin and Litecoin and has a strong blockchain with proof of work.  All transactions are peer-to-peer verified.  Orcacoin has also been designed to benefit International Ocean Conservation Organizations.  Please donate 1% coins mined and traded to the Ocean Conservation Wallet (details below).  This is a long-term project with committed developers.

Orcacoin enables easy, safe and instant payments to be made globally using a secure peer-to-peer verification system. Money transfers can be made at very low cost.  Orcacoin is designed to be mined efficiently with consumer-grade hardware.  It uses a memory-intensive, scrypt-based mining proof-of-work algorithm to target the regular computers and GPUs most people already have.

The Orcacoin network is scheduled to produce a total of 84 million coins. The coin had a pre-mine of 1% which established a strong block chain, and is used to support and promote the coin.  The Ocean Conservation Fund will make regular donations to International Ocean Conservation Organizations, such as, The Marine Conservation Society and The Marine Conservation Institute. Details of all donations will be posted on the website.   Please email the development team if you have suggestions for other Ocean Conservation Organizations that need funding.   We love the oceans and want to preserve them. If you share our passion, please donate 1% of coins mined and traded.

shark coin plz

and make the block reward 1M not random, it is more profitable with high block reward, because it's harder for the price to go down under 1 satoshi, that's the trick about these high reward blocks

It seems other talked about this

Quote
Organization, authorization etc. are the original English spellings pre 1776. This is why the 'Z' is still used all over the USA since any changes to the English Language after that date (American Revolution) by British authorities would have no jurisdiction in the USA.

However to find out which is correct in British English today, all you need to do is look in the Oxford English Dictionary or Oxford Reference Online and you will find that if you are looking for "organisation" or "authorisation", it will say, "see organization" or "see authorization", because the more correct spelling, as far as the academics who compile dictionaries are concerned, is still with a 'Z'! These academics have been fighting a rearguard action over what is sometimes referred to as the "Frenchification" of the English Language where they see no valid reason for the replacement of the 'Z' with an 'S'!

Perhaps the use of the 'S' in Britain comes about because of the softer Southern pronunciation, but whatever the reason most British newspapers will now use the 'S' rather than the 'Z' and this has been so since the 1960's. However I was always taught to use the 'Z' during my UK schooling 50 to 60 years ago.

So both spellings are correct in the UK, but the proliferation of the use of the French 'S' is now so widespread in British publications, that even Australians believe that the 'Z' is American and the 'S' is British!

The developers are based in the UK so we used the usual UK spelling of 'organisations'.

The Ocean Conservation Organisations that will receive donations are currently:

The Marine Conservation Society, and
The Marine Conservation Institute.

All donations will be logged on the website.

It is hoped to add other Ocean Conservation Charities as the fund grows.   Suggestions are always welcome.  Our contact details are on the website.

The wallets really NEED to be in pass protected zips prior to launch and then on launch the password given out on twitter or on here. This is the standard now for a decent release. To many crap launches where the windows qt does not turn up or else the download links are ddos so nobody can get the file.

perhaps better to only upload 1 hour before launch.... less time for brute forcing   use super long complex passwd at least

:=J34goin;=oiet2324gbb;;;dfoiur7h23ufads'jfas

 this kind of thing

very good idea though, so many fails due to ddos attacks on websites... can release pass on here or twitter, They find twitter harder to crash :)

We were going to allow downloads to start at 6.00pm ready for the launch at 6.30pm.

However, in order to achieve a fair launch, we are now going to allow downloads from the website to start shortly.  This is to ensure everybody has a chance to download the files ready for the launch at 6.30pm.  The passwords will be posted here at 6.30pm.

We have a pool ready for launch.  Please see the website.  We hope other pools will be created.  We will post all details on the website as we get them.

This coin will be dead within 4-5 weeks but feel free to waste power on his.

Btw OP is this the best op you can make? Don't you think it needs a little more fine tuning or info about your project, vision, future, who you are, if you can fix a coin, if you can guarantee us you are in this for the long term etc etc.

For me it looks like the 100th animal clone coin made by a 13 year old without anything new, just copy pasta. Too boring to mine.

Do not launch this, rethink your project and start over with an awesome idea and launch. This is not going to work.

the only problem is that nobody will donate for these causes. However nice thought and i  hope it does well. You could provide usernames of people that do donate coins for your project kinda hall of fame...

you could ask the pools if they want to be on the OP to charge 2% and give you guys 1% for charities. If it grows to a success i would only mine on a pool that is donating to your causes.

time remaining to download wallet : 2h12 mn  ::)
fair launch, as is no one can download it in time before launch ?  :D

the very few that could have managed to get wallets could have the courtesy to repost on mega / zippy / whatever please ?

i would only download something posted by the OP.... even then at 34 megs ??

We are taking out the windows installer to make the file smaller.  This should be available on the website very shortly.

The "Getting Started" button doesn't work :/

Are the source files inside the unixbuilds.zip?

Erm, it would still take us more than 1 hour to download at your site "speed". (4 kb/sec... I had twice that speed with my 56k modem like 20 years ago...)
Do you refuse to post it on any other filehost where we'll get it in 30 seconds ?
can you explain the rationale for screwing nearly everyone with a non downloadable wallet before launch ?

do you post the pool at 6 pm ?
And will you give the pool the source early enough that it can start at 6.30 ?

Our pool on the website will be open for registration from 6pm GMT.  Mining to commence at 6.30pm
The source code will be released at 6.20pm GMT on github to allow people time to download and compile before 6.30pm.

DONT RELEASE THE SOURCE EARLIER THAN LAUNCH. THIS IS UNFAIR

oh and windows wallet takes 2 hr to download.

The Orcacoin network is scheduled to produce a total of 84 million coins. The mining difficulty will increase every 12 months. There has been a small pre-mine of 1% in order to establish the block chain and start the Ocean Conservation Fund. The Fund will be distributed to International Ocean Conservation Organisations, such as The Marine Conservation Society and The Marine Conservation Institute. Details of all donations will be posted on the website.

Guess what will happen.

i think they mean the block reward will halve at 12 months, can't mean diff will increase in 12 months.

good idea, take your time don't let people put you off.

1. windows qt on mega.. well before hand so people can download and scan
2. password released on time on here or twitter so ddos can't take it out.
3. release source at same time as password...also put nodes up then too so they are not taken down early.

if you do a  good fair release people can't say anything about it being a scam. ... they can then just choose to either mine or not.

I like the idea of these charitable or good cause coins, even if they raise a small amount....why not.

From the website: Orcacoin is a new, secure cryptocurrency designed for global mining and trading. It is also designed to benefit International Ocean Conservation Organisations with a voluntary 1% donation of coins mined and traded.

Can you show us some emails or prove you had contact with them? Show us the plans for the future.

To me it looks like you do a lot of jabba jabba to run away with the premine as soon it hits an exchange and the orca is just a marketing trick.

My guess is that its hosted on a cloud server and the dev doesn't want to buy a domain so he's using no-ip.

Looks like its hosted on the same machine that the website is hosted on which is not good considering the website can't handle the wallet load as is .

worst launch I've seen in a while. The pools is hosted on the same cluster of servers that the website was on. Website couldn't even handle the traffic coming from wallet downloads so what chance did the ONLY pool have. I've had some accepted but stratum has been down for longer than its been up.

Worker was temporarily banned - never seen that on CGMiner before!
Guess they are actively turning away miners rather than letting them run..... :)

I see only block detected new block and found new block.
Nothing else.
Do you all also have 0 unconfirmed and 0 confirmed coins in the pool ?

Its because the pool has shitty hosting and their stratum server keeps causing rejects. After a certain amount of rejects your workers get banned.

With the wallet losing sync no matter how may nodes I add, it hasn't been smooth but i've managed to solve 6 blocks so far and about twice that in orphans with all the latency.

then they ask for a donation too

then they tell you it offers nothing and it's a clone of the last 1000 shit clone coin ponzi schemes..
all brought to you by a name changing coin spammer that adds a million coins a day here non stop.. change icon and change name and re-upload.

so huge you have to spam your own thread every 3 posts to tell us it's "huge" and beg for people to jump on board, the only huge thing here is your pile of premined scamcoins, no sane exchanger will ever accept such a grotesque scam, just die already.

This coin is a charity coin with a pre-announced premine of 1% for the Charity Fund.  This is not a scam coin.  We need new pools as the current demand has knocked our pools out.  Please help.

 ##            Quick Primer on addnode vs connect            ##
 ##  Let's say for instance you use addnode=4.2.2.4          ##
 ##  addnode will connect you to and tell you about the      ##
 ##    nodes connected to 4.2.2.4.  In addition it will tell ##
 ##    the other nodes connected to it that you exist so     ##
 ##    they can connect to you.                              ##
 ##  connect will not do the above when you 'connect' to it. ##
 ##    It will *only* connect you to 4.2.2.4 and no one else.##
 ##                                                          ##

 ##  connect to "trusted" nodes.                             ##
 ##                                                          ##
 ##  If you run multiple nodes on a LAN, there's no need for ##
 ##  all of them to open lots of connections.  Instead       ##
 ##  'connect' them all to one node that is port forwarded   ##

No - our pool did not steal any coins.

The pool went down and caused a delay crediting all the coins mined to some of the accounts.  This is being done now.  Most of the miners have already received their coins.

Why would we steal coins?  That does not help the charities we are trying to support.  We already have a large fund for the charities of over 500,000 coins.

we dont need more pools, we need good coins, not more SHITCOINS

We agree - thats why we developed ORCACOIN!!!  A Coin designed to give something back.

Then make your own pool, we have more coins to mine

We did have a pool which crashed due to the number of people trying to mine it.  Before we restart our pool to want to ensure everybody who mined gets their coins.  In the meantime, we recommended hashfever and due to the demand, they also crashed.  That is why we are asking for more pools.

Enjoy your mining Mr Jitters

Please make some pools - here is the conf file  -

Sample orcacoin.conf file

 # Network-related settings:
  # Run on the test network instead of the real bitcoin network.
  testnet=0
  # Connect via a socks4 proxy
 #proxy=127.0.0.1:9050
  ##############################################################
 ##            Quick Primer on addnode vs connect            ##
 ##  Let's say for instance you use addnode=4.2.2.4          ##
 ##  addnode will connect you to and tell you about the      ##
 ##    nodes connected to 4.2.2.4.  In addition it will tell ##
 ##    the other nodes connected to it that you exist so     ##
 ##    they can connect to you.                              ##
 ##  connect will not do the above when you 'connect' to it. ##
 ##    It will *only* connect you to 4.2.2.4 and no one else.##
 ##                                                          ##
 ##  So if you're behind a firewall, or have other problems  ##
 ##  finding nodes, add some using 'addnode'.                ##
 ##                                                          ##
 ##  If you want to stay private, use 'connect' to only      ##
 ##  connect to "trusted" nodes.                             ##
 ##                                                          ##
 ##  If you run multiple nodes on a LAN, there's no need for ##
 ##  all of them to open lots of connections.  Instead       ##
 ##  'connect' them all to one node that is port forwarded   ##
 ##  and has lots of connections.                            ##
 ##       Thanks goes to [Noodle] on Freenode.               ##

Post the communication with charity if you're honest

So dev where is your donation plan? Where is the communication between Orcacoin and the sea charity organisations? To me it still looks like a cheap marketing trick to get goodwill. Pics or it didn't happen!

also: I've asked very legit questions yesterday, you did not answer one of them! Is this how a dev should communicate with his miners and investors?

Unfortunately, we could not answer all queries during the launch.  As we stated, we were launching a charity coin we were unprepared for the huge response.  Thousands of wallets were being downloaded at the same time and the pool was overwhelmed.   All miners have had their coins credited.  ORCAcoin was developed to help Ocean Conservation Organisations.  This is a long-term project.  The pre-mine established the Fund and will allow for support and promotion of the coin.  All donations to the charities will be logged on the website.

This coin is now in the community - it will succeed if it is supported.  We need more pools and more nodes to be added.  Please continue to mine and trade this coin.

The wallet is syncing slowly because we need more nodes on the network.  We have added two nodes and hope that more will be added.

I believe noone.
Apart from believing almost every coin maker merely intends to make a quick buck here and most of them are dishonest assholes as well. I don't believe anyone when they are talking about making a coin for charity. It's just not true.
 I wish it were different because honestly it's really annoying. If I were able to change it by making an honest cryptocurrency with honest people I'd do it, albeit I lack what is necessary to make it. Apart from honesty - I got that.

Wallet should update automatically now that new pools and nodes are being added.  Please email your wallet address to: admin@orcacoin.info with the details of the email address you used to register at orcacoinpool.  We will investigate and make sure you have your coins (and a bonus for the inconvenience).

What mining software do you use?

What error do you get? I am mining fine here on our ORCA pool from three different locations (CPU mining to test).

https://i.imgur.com/daXu44d.png

Instead of the previous cgminer config, try:

Code:
cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://85.25.209.87:7535 -u 4RccNbHNouiuCvebS4cC4cajnKnKtFaDpC -p x

Replace 4RccNbHNouiuCvebS4cC4cajnKnKtFaDpC with your own ORCA address. It's possible you have to add other parameters to optimize performance, but this should work.

Or, edit cgminer.conf

Code:
{
"pools" : [
{
"url" : "stratum+tcp://85.25.209.87:7535",
"user" : "4RccNbHNouiuCvebS4cC4cajnKnKtFaDpC",
"pass" : "x"
}
],

"scrypt" : true,

"kernel-path" : "/usr/local/bin"
}

Otherwise, try GUIminer-scrypt: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=150331.msg1597536#msg1597536

Fill in these;
  • host: 85.25.209.87
  • port: 7535
  • username: yourORCAaddress
  • password; x

Please do not worry about the message you are getting on your wallet at the moment.  The wallet is in sync with the network as the wallets are all showing the same block number.

The wallet is fully functional and will show all the coins that you currently have.

The wallet message "out of sync" is there because, the network hashrate is very variable at the moment.  This is to be expected so soon after launch.  The wallet is taking time to calculate the expected number of blocks.   It does not affect the wallet in anyway.  Once more wallets and nodes come online this message will disappear.

I have sent you a PM detailing the coins we have sent to your wallet and how you can find them.

When you are solo-mining, the blocks that you find should automatically be credited to your wallet.  If your wallet is not crediting you with any blocks, please PM us with details of the mining software you are using.  We can then give you additional help.

So guys ; i put some serious hashing power on Orca for a short time and mined 677 unconfirmed coins. Two days later I look in at the dashboard and I see : 70 confirmed coins !!

Pool : Hashfever... What's going on ? Where 607 coins from orphaned blocks ? Difficulty was around 1 so that's unlikely.

Seems like something fishy is going on.

Note that is not a pun as Orca's are mammals ;)

Hi

The extra security the coin has requires the blocks are verified, peer-to-peer, 120 times.  As the coin is still newly launched, we are aware that the confirmations are taking some time.  This will speed up as the network size increases.

We will contact the pool operator and request further information on your coins.  Please PM us with your mining details.

We appreciate your support of our coin and we will send you 500 Ocra as a gesture of goodwill.  Please PM your wallet details.

Thank you

I do not think that asking people to donate some of their coins to charity could be seen as a marketing tool.  On this site the main emphasis seems to be a quick profit.  Charitable coins are likely to do less well.  We were taken by surprise by the extraordinary interest in the coin.

We developed a strong coin which we hope will have a long life.  We hope Orcacoin will generate interest in, and hopefully some funds, for ocean conservation.  The donations are voluntary.  Nobody has to donate to us if they do not want to - donations can be made directly to the charities.

When we make our first donation, I will ensure that you receive a message showing the details. Thank you for helping us with our coin.

I mined quite a bit of this coin, I think that with the right PR this could be big. Look at what happened with Auroracoin. Specualtors and investors are always ready to jump on the next train.
Good PR is where the Orca team needs to step up. Or are we talking about one person here ?

Anyway, I'd like to sell some of my coins to you guys for a fair price before it hits the exchanges. I have to much to be able to sell at an exchange without crashing the price.

PM with with any buy offers.

Does anyone else have trouble syncing lately ?

Create a .conf file in appdata/roaming/orcacoin.

Simply make a new textfile and paste this in it ;

connect=62.254.202.134
connect=62.254.202.137
addnode=62.254.202.137
addnode=62.254.202.134

then "save as" and name it "orcacoin.conf". You have to use "" or it won't save the extension and it won't work.

After that, orcacoin.qt should connect and sync just fine.

If that helped, consider tipping the Ocean Conservation fund : 4Zmi4EPtCU5RqoE2967UzYSoaNapnU4wRQ and/or yours truly : 4QiP97wB7Z4gfQEmGWTWH2hGJyGVd9pR4o

Once the coin is listed on an exchange, get in contact with the Ocean Fund, and other Ocean Charities, and with a little guidance, you can help them setup an account at the exchange.  Once they have a wallet address, they can have coins sent to them.  The contributors buy the coins, or part coins at lazyCoins.

If you convince the charities that it is in THEIR interest to accept BTC and ORCA coins, they will contact their frequent contributors and get the info out.  Need to make the purchase and contribution as easy as possible, and idiot-proof.  There is no second chance to get interest going in a failed launch.

ALSO.........Once the LAZYCOIN exchange is set up and running, the devs need to be active in the BLOGS where the potential coin buyers are.  Get the word out, but dont do it until the exchange is fully functional.  If a customer fails the first time to get a coin or make a contribution, they will not return.  The system has to work the first time, everytime.

It would be beneficial if the devs sold coins right off the ORCA Coin home page.  You could accept BTC, LTC, DOGE.  You then give the purchaser several choices of charities to send the coins to, which the web site sends on to the respective wallet at the exchange.

There is a lot of work for the devs here, but if you want to make the cash, you gotta put in the sweat.

Well, I see you posted the charity web addresses on the ORCA Coin home page.  But still there is work to do.  An API grid for direct link to each charity wallet would be better.  I checked the first web site, which has a "donate here" page.  Perhaps you can get them to post the API grid as well, once LAZY COINS is running.

Frankly, I think you should pursue getting on an other exchange, such as Coin-E, Vircurex, Coinedup, CoinEx, bter.com, BTC-e, Poloniex.  Cryptsy is too expensive to get on... you would have to buy a few thousand votes with BTC to be listed.

Thank you Litoshi.  Great comments.  We are working hard in the background to promote this coin.  We took a lot of time to build a secure coin that will have long life.  We are in contact with ocean charities at the moment to ask them to display a wallet address on their website.  Users can then donate directly to them.

Lazycoin is a scam that contacts new coins to get many users to register for a non functional exchange. All inks are dead and it looks good. This will be a big scam since they harvest passwords and plunder people's accounts. Enable 2FA and never re-use passwords.

Hi HammyCoin.  Its great you like the coin.

Currently, the difficulty retargets every 504 blocks and is calculated from the previous 500 blocks.    We are currently looking at ways to speed up the block time when the hashrate dips.

Happy mining.

Orcacoin has a strong blockchain and was stringently tested before release.  The coin and the wallets work well and have done so from launch.  We are raising money for ocean conservation charities and I hope you will support us in this work.  As we stated at the outset, this is a long-term project with committed developers.

I really like that the spread is only 10 points not like doge where the spread is 90 points

Good luck! and I hope you make it :D

I still have some orcas from lauch

will update wallet soon and download the whole blockchain again :D

thanks so much for your work, great coin and great cause... in order to make things easier for SEO (but not only also general perception)

currently orca coin redirects from orcacoin.info to http://62.254.202.137/  that will impact SEO for sure..

otherwise as they say around here "bump"  ;D  and thanks once again!

for smiles and good luck!

                             ORCACOIN A coin made by the community, for the community.

                                        1.    Make coins using your computer
                                        2.    Trade coins with each other across the globe - quickly and for free
                                        3.    Donate to ocean conservation - if you want
                                        4.    Everyone keeps track of the coins (open-source and peer-to-peer system)

This is a new and valuable resource for ocean enthusiasts - and a fantastic technology!   The future is being built now and the people are in charge.  Be a part of this exciting new project.  Mine the coin, use the coin.
