Title: Facebook buys WhatsApp for $19 billion in tech world’s largest buy
Post by: sgk on February 20, 2014, 04:27:15 AM
Facebook is buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash and stock, by far the company's largest acquisition and bigger than any that Google, Microsoft or Apple have ever done.

Clearly there is something seriously wrong with human evolution when people are dying of starving and a messaging app is sold for $19 Billion

sadly that is how things are working in this World, pure business , I think facebook has realized that sooner or later watsapp will take over there member base , it is already beating facebook in daily signups i guess, most of facebook users already switched to watsaap so they have to do it to sustain..! otherwise Google and Microsoft will eat them..! there is no mercy.. Facebook don't have products like google or microsoft. But now they are planning seriously to bag few. I think they are looking to take over all the social networking site, Only twitter is there to give them some competition

This is getting out of hand... these valuations of these apps are absurd, IMO. I think we're going to see a lot of this collapse in the next few years. This all just screams bubble to me...
Did some googling, so let me elaborate: In 2013, NBC Universal was aquired by Comcast for $17bn. Facebook thinks that WhatsApp is worth more than NBC Universal?! Really? Additionally, Heinz was bought by Berkshire Hathaway for $23bn, which is only a rock's throw away from the price Facebook paid for WhatsApp. I'm sorry, but I just don't see how WhatsApp is possibly adding as much value to the market place as NBC Universal or Heinz...
I think like we had the dotcom bubble burst a few years ago, we're about to start seeing the social/app bubble burst soon. These valuations and buyouts of things like whatsapp and instagram and the like are insane. These apps are easily usurped by the next big thing, the next fad, or the next shift in technology. The only thing that could possibly make things worthwhile is the data-mining aspect, but I still don't see how that information is truly worth that much money. Maybe I'm just ignorant? idk...

Anyway, here is official facebook investor page, for those who want more info: http://investor.fb.com/secfiling.cfm?filingID=1326801-14-10&CIK=1326801

19 billion for an app  ::). Why couldn't they just create their own and integrate it somehow with Facebook and save themselves a lot of money?

haha how they will get all that member base.. they just bought it for that, there are so many better social networks or social aaps better then many main stream networks  currently that went in dark due to very low member base even after using all the advertisement to get exposure .. !

I don't think they only acquired whatsapp to add value to there market rather they did it to shut down the competition b/w whatsapp and fb , they were left behind in that competition by a long margin. If fb haven't bought whatsapp i'm sure within few years whatsapp might have acquired fb that too in very low price . So you can say they paid 19$bn just to save fb.

Yeah , all there members are fed up with them , ask any 10 people/friends  who are using whatsapp nd facebook both, 7 of them will say that they will prefer whatsaap over facebook. and even after they will create something like whatsapp its not gonna work because peoples are fed up with fb, so only option left there was to buy whatsapp

Will they? Have you actually done this market research or are you just assuming they'll say that? Nobody I know would say this. What's app is just a text service, it can't offer 90% of what Facebook does.

They will probably add a option to chat with fb friends from whatsapp, on top of that they will get a huge database of verified mobile numbers, photos etc. They can sell users data, give it to NSA, or do many other things.

In jan, whatsapp userbase was around 430million, so you can say they paid around 38$ per user and got whole company and software for free :D.
And about 16 (some sites say, they paid 16) or 19 billion they can earn it back in no time

forget what i say.. just try on your own ask 10 frnds who use both the services whatsapp and fb, and then tell me the reactions .. the main reason why whatsapp is better then fb in opinion of many users because  whatsapp keeps you in touch with only those people who really hold some kind of value in your life, and if you telling me whats app can't offer 90% of what fb does, you are wrong, absolutely wrong..! just tell me what 90% fb does nd WA don't

Not a good thing what's happened. Facebook will only get more control over your privacy with this takeover.
I've switched to Telegram. Same nice layout and although not 100% secure a lot safer than whatsapp. If you start a secret chat, it uses P2P instead of storing messages on their servers.

Seriously? What's app is a text messaging service and that's pretty much it. And I already know the opinion of my friends. You may be tired of Facebook, but that doesn't mean everybody else is. They both serve their purpose but Facebook smothers what's app in features as it's a social network site, not just a messaging service, which you can do on Facebook too. If you want to just stay in contact with your close friends you can do that on Facebook any way.

ok if you think that whatsapp is just another text messaging service , then give me a logical expiation why fb bought it for whooping 19bn[that is what i heard till now] , can you substantiate your claim besides just saying so..?

I don't really see any reason to worry about privacy, security, or why you should stop using WhatsApp if you already do (though I've never used it, and I think this thread is the first I've heard of it). Further centralization of already-centralized data stores is pointless from a privacy-invasion perspective. You can just as easily demand information out of Facebook as WhatsApp. Outside that, you should assume backdoors are in every product until it's proven otherwise.

19 billion for an app  ::). Why couldn't they just create their own and integrate it somehow with Facebook and save themselves a lot of money?
Intellectual property rights are a bitch.

Acquiring the competition for the sake of saving your own ass on losing out the member base seems the logical decision, but the amount is monstrous. Remember Microsoft acquiring Nokia's handset division? That was something like only 7.5 Billion dollars. And Nokia is a whale.

Here are more details.

Facebook said yesterday it’s paying $12 billion in stock, $4 billion in cash and $3 billion in restricted shares for WhatsApp, which lets users send messages through its services on mobile devices with different operating systems. WhatsApp is adding 1 million users daily, and Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said he expects the service to reach more than 1 billion people in the next few years, escalating the challenges to competing Asia-based services.

So once it's will reach 1 Billion users,FB will get 1 Billion $ Every year

absolutely right observation , wechat got popular in china but totally flopped in India , because it has nothing new as compared to whatsapp people don't switch to new things till they find something very unique/useful/fun/entertaining in it.

I've switched to Telegram like I mentioned in my other post.
Other people I know are waiting for Hemlis (https://heml.is/).
ChatSecure (https://chatsecure.org/) would be the most secure option to go for if you value privacy I think.

Quoting Mark Zuckerberg from his fb page
Quote
I’m excited to announce that we’ve agreed to acquire WhatsApp and that their entire team will be joining us at Facebook.

Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. We do this by building services that help people share any type of content with any group of people they want. WhatsApp will help us do this by continuing to develop a service that people around the world love to use every day.

WhatsApp is a simple, fast and reliable mobile messaging service that is used by over 450 million people on every major mobile platform. More than 1 million people sign up for WhatsApp every day and it is on its way to connecting one billion people. More and more people rely on WhatsApp to communicate with all of their contacts every day.

WhatsApp will continue to operate independently within Facebook. The product roadmap will remain unchanged and the team is going to stay in Mountain View. Over the next few years, we're going to work hard to help WhatsApp grow and connect the whole world. We also expect that WhatsApp will add to our efforts forInternet.org, our partnership to make basic internet services affordable for everyone.

WhatsApp will complement our existing chat and messaging services to provide new tools for our community. Facebook Messenger is widely used for chatting with your Facebook friends, and WhatsApp for communicating with all of your contacts and small groups of people. Since WhatsApp and Messenger serve such different and important uses, we will continue investing in both and making them each great products for everyone.

WhatsApp had every option in the world, so I’m thrilled that they chose to work with us. I’m looking forward to what Facebook and WhatsApp can do together, and to developing great new mobile services that give people even more options for connecting.

I've also known Jan for a long time, and I know that we both share the vision of making the world more open and connected. I'm particularly happy that Jan has agreed to join the Facebook board and partner with me to shape Facebook's future as well as WhatsApp's.

Jan and the WhatsApp team have done some amazing work to connect almost half a billion people. I can’t wait for them to join Facebook and help us connect the rest of the world.

It's the largest social network in Europe after Facebook with 228 million users and especially popular in Russia and neighboring countries.

You need to comprehend what people say and articulate yourself better and also re-read what I said. And of course you are biased. Your opinions on Whatsapp and Facebook members getting tired of it are not facts. Mostly what you were trying to tell me was irrelevant to what I was saying.

facebook is building a monopol, they're buying everything that could be a threat to them..

therefore they eliminate the threat as they're now controlling it and plus they're now earning their revenue :D

Telegram works just like WhatsApp, apart from a very important additional feature: Secret Chats.
From their Play Store page: "....Secret Chats, featuring end-to-end encryption to ensure that a message can only be read by its intended recipient. When it comes to Secret Chats, nothing is logged on our servers and you can automatically program the messages to self-destruct from both devices so there is never any record of it."

Its amazing a company that big cannot come up with a decent chat program on PC or mobile. Also I'm not sure why they would want whatsapp. It will fall to BBM once all of the features make it to android/iphone.

Facebook is buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash and stock, by far the company's largest acquisition and bigger than any that Google, Microsoft or Apple have ever done.

If Zuckerberg had any business acumen at all they would've already created some sort of App or Facebook feature that could send free texts and make free calls. People wouldn't need to use WhatsApp then and they could've saved themselves a lot of money.

There you go mixing your opinion with fact again. I never said I was a fan, but you obviously seem to dislike it so much that it's clouding your judgement. All my points are valid, you just can't seem to comprehend this. There's really no need to act like a bitch when someone has a differing opinion, but whatever.

It is sexiest. And if you think that's even remotely funny then you honestly have a pathetically immature and feeble mind. You can also change that image to your username and it makes more sense.
