Title: New Virus Sweeping the Net PLAY IT SAFE!!
Post by: YourMine.org on February 20, 2014, 11:12:01 AM
Hi all
Encase you have not heard there is a new very deadly virus out, when your computer gets infected your files are encrypted with military grade encryption, there is no way to break it & you are held for ransom + if you do not pay within 3 days they delete the key and your files are lost forever, the virus is called crytolocker & it is not a joke i have seen it in action, stay safe make a system restore point, back up your files to an external drive and disconnect it, more info here : http://www.today.com/money/nasty-new-malware-locks-your-files-forever-unless-you-pay-8C11511655 (http://www.today.com/money/nasty-new-malware-locks-your-files-forever-unless-you-pay-8C11511655)

So if I get infected by this somehow, can I go to a system restore point?

Will this fix the problem?

these have been around for a long time now..
which is why idiots that download every wallet and run them should use their brains.
malware such as keyloggers attached to wallet files have been posted here before i have seen it myself more than once.

Yes it will work and is the only thing that will work, how ever you still will want to back up the data then format.

It'll fix the virus but so would blowing up the computer. It's not the only solution relative to risk of losing wallets.

For the coin wallets you need to keep backups frequently. Each time you do a transaction, there's a risk with some clients that they will spawn another ~100 addresses and previous backups might then miss new addresses holding change from sent transactions.

Hmm... so like what? :) it is impossible to block my files :D there are so many ways to get data from a disk..

:) anyway better be careful. Firewall + antivirus (I recommend AVG)

Yeah, but you should always have a wallet somewhere that you do occassional backup on.

No, there's not. You can't get that data back unless you have the passphrase or backups from before the files were encrypted.

There's no big harm in running software firewalls or antivirus, as long as you do not think you are safe because of them. Using antivirus is _not_ being careful: Being careful means not downloading random binaries from the internet.

Quite true that also includes using an online mail system to open email data if your av does not scan it, also my experience the viruses that have done the most damage have been undetected by av software.

Regular backups are a pain to do, but vital.

Not sure where you are getting your info, but it has not changed much since it was launched. The only change and that was over a month and half ago was the decryption service on tor.
