Title: Easy way to check for copy pasting on the forum
Post by: stompix on July 29, 2018, 04:44:47 PM
This is my first guide (if you can call it that), so be lenient with me:).

It was a pain in the * to constantly search for text, add "site:bitcointalk" to my queries and so, I tried to see if I can do this with a single click.

Surprisingly, it's easy as pie.  :)

    • I've downloaded this extension for chrome:
It's called Context Menu Search, probably there are better ones but it does its job
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/context-menu-search/ocpcmghnefmdhljkoiapafejjohldoga

    • Went to "Manage current options"
    https://i.imgur.com/yRHugf9.png

    • Modified the search querry for google:
    Quote
    http://www.google.com/search?q=site:bitcointalk.org "TESTSEARCH"

    • Now, to the text phase on the most recent posts page (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=recent) (I don't use patrol because it's full of the bounty section posts).

Believe it or not...The first guy at the top of the page was a copypaster:

    • Checking google:

    • Going to the page (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3355659.msg41900207#msg41900207) where the original was: (and double check to make sure it is really a copy paste

It's not 100% reliable as Google does not index all and sometimes it shows some half matches first but since it's just a click away to uncover a rule breaker when you're suspicious of something it's pretty nice to have it around.
Of course, it can be configured to search for the "exactly this phrase" on the entire web also, not just on bitcointalk.org.

Some of the copy/paste spammers have already beaten this method in that they replace certain words, replace letters with symbols, among other things.

Some of these spammers also will copy content from sources not on bitcointalk.

This fight in between good and bad will always be there. We are trying to do our best to beat them and I understand that it's not an easy job. By the way, good guide @OP.

I think it would be better to remove the incentives of the copy/paste spammers and/or provide incentives not to spam (this way).

At the end of the day, these spammers can use automation to make their copy/past posts, and can use technology to hide their activity, while the decision to ban someone is a manual process.

I know that pretty well, I didn't advertise it as some magic wand  :D

As I said, you can configure it to search for "this exact text" on the entire web
And, if the text spinner is stupid enough to copy text that has some numbers in it....

The rules of the game on the ICO market change every month. And the latest statistics of ICO projects says that many are not familiar with them. At the beginning of 2018, 44% of companies failed without reaching a softcap. Thus, today one can forget about the idea of holding an ICO as a high-level phenomenon when the ROI was x400, but it is necessary to take this form of fundraising more seriously. The budget for marketing is growing, and the average investment bill is decreasing. To succeed, you need to have a prototype (MVP) and get approval from the crypto community.

One suggestion I can remember came from a member was to disable topic bumping for the comments from users who are not at least a member.

I think this is a pretty fair deal. Earn some respects first before making a contribution to a topic.

Newbies and Jr members who are here to spam the forum in mind - they are welcome to make 100s of spammy posts a day but the topic is never going to bump. If they continue posting spammy posts then they are not going to earn any merit means they are not going to rank up either. If things go the same then eventually they will give up and will leave the forum. As a result you will also stop seeing services like bumping ANN threads, selling Jr member accounts etc.

The easiest way is to replace the language layout on your computer and use similar letters from another language. Then Google will not find a repeat. The fight with this futile. Sorting through all the languages based on the Latin alphabet too long time.

You are literally teaching the copy/pasters the unique lesson of how to copy/paste by tricking the system LOL
    Teach us something good  :D

I've had a few dozen of those bots nuked again in just the last 2 days. Homograph attacks (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3094459.msg31945490#msg31945490) are actually very easy to detect, once you know what you're looking for. No need to search for a source it was copied from, just report one post, and the spambot/bumpbot gets banned.

Good tool! I have detected plagiarized comments after reading some comments that were suspicious to me. I have also seen comments "copy pasting" as you call it once I reported to these plagiarisms I found that 100% of my reports were effective.

The method I used was simple without tool "Highlighting the sentence that could be a plagiarism and right click and search in Google" and the result is 100% reliable. I learned it because I am a Mentor in a Coursera course and one of my activities is to review blog articles by the learners.

A reflection on "copy pasting or plagiarism" I do not know if there is a sanctioning measure on those who comment on this fact but there should be some measure to clean the forum of "comments without utility".

There are actually tools to spin text and make it completely unique. It has been in existence for years, those tools are used by webmaster to create web 2 or content for pbn links. Anyone with little bit knowledge of Internet marketing would be aware of these tools already.

That is one option, although I don't think it would address the copy/paste spammers (it might address the "bump spammers").

Again, it is the incentives that need to be removed, not abilities/permissions.

I find it more effective to search on a shorter phrase with an unusual sequence/selection of words. In your example, the phrase "as a crypto world," is sufficiently unusual just because of the poor grammar.

It's a never-ending fight, but not fighting at all simply isn't an option.
