Title: Ranking up easily. Newbie to Member in less than 2 months!
Post by: Retty on July 30, 2018, 10:42:25 AM
Hello all, just thought i'd share this with you to prove a point that it is absolutely possible to "rank up" quickly on Bitcointalk.

Let me just say that i am not posting this to boast or brag (totally not what i'm about), its simply intended as a guide/advice to show that it is actually pretty easy to rank up if you're willing to work at it.

I joined here in mid-May, wasn't active for the first 2 weeks while i browsed the site offline, and i haven't been online much at all over the past 2-3 weeks as i have had lots going on in 'real life' and vacations etc, so effectively i have been here less than 2 months!

Just to let you know, i don't know ANYBODY in real life from this site, i don't get any preferential treatment and there's no bias toward me, you or the vast majority of people on here. So please don't think that its impossible or too hard to rank up- it's really not. See below.

  • Post quality: Super simple tip. I don't profess to be an expert writer, infact, i've been called out on here before a few times for making my posts too long (i obviously disagree  ;)). What i do know is effort is rewarded. If you are willing to post something helpful, something useful, something that another user on here can look at and take something constructive from, then that is what i consider to be a good post. It dosen't have to be an essay or perfect grammatically correct English- it just needs to be useful/helpful!
  • Study other people: Look at what other people are posting. This is so easy, have a quick look at higher ranked members post history. I'm not saying copy from them- Definitely not, but look at what they are posting and understand why they are a respected member. Its really no coincidence. They are posting high quality, relevant content that people find useful.
  • Shitposting: Pardon my language  :D, it has to be said though! If you shitpost on here then i can GUARANTEE you will be stuck as a newbie forever. Examples of shitposts? take a look at the Bounty section... Its an embarrassment! If you post "great project" "super project" and all that other crap- you will get what you deserve....NOTHING.
  • Merit begging: Really didnt want to bring this up, but if you beg for Merit then you are done! Easiest way to get Merit? Make something worthy of Meriting! Its nice to know your work is appreciated and that people find what you say worthy of a Merit. Once you get your first/first few, it will spur you on to [continue] make better quality content
  • Quality over Quantity: Guys just use common sense on here. Why bother posting 10-20 crappy posts when you could spend the same amount of time (or less) making decent thought out posts that could potentially be rewarded and recognised by the community? Makes more sense right?  :)

I'm no different to any of you. i'm just an ordinary family guy who is sharing his experience as a relatively new member and how i have found my time on here so far. If i can do it then so can you. This really isn't rocket science- it's not even hard work!  ;D. Just change your forum habits and if you are willing to put the time and effort in, you will be a valued member of the community and rank up faster!

If anyone has anything to add then i'd love to hear your thoughts! Cheers.

Nothing is new but it's good advice. No one going to follow this because on one want work hard they just need merit. Thanks to remind new people.

But problem is how people will earn merit even HQ post. Because many people like you here. Just earn to merit but don't want to distribute them. People merited you due to your good reply or high quality post. But you never saw any good or high quality post yet ? Still now you have spend only 1 smerit even though you have 11 smerit currently. So how you motivate people cause still you are not motivated ?

Sorry I am hardly mention you because you didn't spend your smerit. Your smerit is drying. Please spread your merit around forum. So other people will get benefit from you. Don't be selfish. You will not benefited if you hold smerit.

Good try but this kind of posts were posted many times with same contents. You don't need to make nonsense caps lock and bold in your text, it sometimes causes annoyance.

yes your opinion is good, but i realized that you got 24 merit and gave away 1 smerit in the past 120 days, the problem here is the smerit sharing when you yourself are also holding it for yourself.

This is one of the biggest problems of the current merit system in my opinion. People keep on stakimg sMerits instead of spending them, drying out the merits in circulation. I am not sure how to solve this problem other than educate people to keep on spending sMerits (like you did). Noone will benefit if we all keep our sMerits and dont use them.

Totally agree. I find kind of hypocrite the people talking about how difficult is to earn merits and, at the same time, keeping them as a treasure (Gollum "treasure") while they are speaking about how the system should be fairer to newbies.

To the OP. I remember giving you your very first merit. Trust me, it feels nice, so, why don`t you just spare your merits and help others to rank-up? I don`t have any left, for, as soon as they come, as soon as I look for someone to award. If you have Smerits, it is also important for you to distribute them in order to help others to feel the same as you felt while receiving your very first one!! Why are you keeping them and at the same time speaking about merits?? Tss, just a question,  a legit one, I think.

Rank is what shown below your forum name. I guess you know that. I see your account registered at 2015 and now it is 2018, forum member rank had some changes, you can check it here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0

  • Post quality: Super simple tip. I don't profess to be an expert writer, infact, i've been called out on here before a few times for making my posts too long (i obviously disagree  ;)).
I think it depends on the post. Something doesn't have to be as long as Tolstoy's War & Peace if you can get the message across in a sentence or two. If something is needlessly long or a messy ramble most people will zone out, not read it or miss the point completely. I would try keep things concise but obviously sometimes some things need to be explained in minute detail.

My best piece of advice for those seeking merit is to look at the posts of others that are being merited or check the merit history of some of the more established/popular users here and you will see it's usually the posts that offer some sort of original opinion and are more than just one or two lines, or at the very least you can tell they've actually put some time and thought into what they're posting regardless of how long or short it is. I see a lot of users here just writing really generic posts that have been said a thousand times before. Nobody is going to merit them because they don't stand out. Make your posts stand out by the content, not just big fonts or lots of sentences but make it something people actually want to read.

Thank you. If I can add a little: just try to be useful.

Exactly. You don't have to just helpful either. Just speak your opinion and show people you've actually spent time on your post and this will greatly improve your chances of getting merit.

You know what CoolCryptovator you are right in what you say, i am guilty of not sending merit. There are reasons for that however, mainly the first being is that i am actually very rarely on here as i am so snowed under with work at present. Hence why I havent been in any signature campaigns as i simply don't have the time at present.

Thanks for the good advice quote, and although i agree somewhat on what you say, i'd like to also believe there are other people out there like myself who do chime in with conversation and arent here exclusively for the bounties/spamming. That is totally subjective and open to debate.

I'm going to make a concerted effort this weekend to look for some quality posts and dish out some s-merit. I achieve absolutely nothing by holding it. So thanks for the reminder!  ;)

Hello SEO corp, i know you have followed me from the start and i always enjoy your posts and input. I find your words always very honest yet encouraging to newer members so i always have respected you for this reason.

Again you are absolutely right, but there's certainly no malice intended with keeping these s-merits!  ;D, as i also just explained/replied to Coolcryptovator i don't really need to repeat myself as i'm sure you can read it already.

I am going to get onto it ASAP and hopefully encourage others to make an effort. I think once you see that first one you then know its possible and that people are looking at what you write and it encourages good posting behaviour.

Thanks for your kind words, and sorry if I did sound a bit rude. Yes, to give someone his/her very first merit I think works as a clue. I mean: if you give someone a merit for a thread, probably this person is going to understand what is a good contribution, so he/she will be encouraged to keep doing!!! That`s why I find so important to be supported with some good newbies, deserving ones. Of course, this is a personal approximation, really subjective, and each one has a mind and personal preferences.
Anyway, congrats on becoming a member so fast. You deserve it.

Great job sir, this has always been what the experience folks say but I think the problem with some of we the newbies is Laziness(sorry to say that) but that's the truth. We don't want to research about topics, all some of us do is to comment in order to increase our post and activities then we turn to beg for merit but remember the universe don't serve needs rather deserve. Take your time and write a very good post, with that I hope the merits will follow soon. My take though  :).

Good tips but it might not work because  a lot of people don't want to give away merits for free since it's a working business that generates profit for them.

<…>If anyone has anything to add then i'd love to hear your thoughts! <..>
I tend to create largish posts too, simply because either they are either statistic based or because I put quite a bit of thought into them, and often come up with ideas that simply do not fit into a short paragraph. So no issues with long texts on my behalf if they are well structured, understandable and thought through.

Everyone who has ranked here in a decent amount of time since the Merit System kicked-off has his bag of dos and don’ts based on his own experience. These are not universal for everyone, but a common factor of the dos would include the highlights you’ve pointed out.

One basic thing to consider is post history. When awarding merit, one tends to look not only at the post, but also at the poster’s posting history track. If it is full of bounty reports and/or one/two liners with no added value, then the member may well go unmerited even if the post being scrutinized is decent.  Often, a decent post that stands-out immersed in a bad posting history is a good indicator of plagiarism too.

This is obviously not your case, since you have a good history track, but the above just goes to back your quality over quantity point, stressing how important it is to have a balanced history abiding by this factor.

Ranking up from newbie to jr member is easy cause you dont need any merits for it, but going forward to member and up you will need extra effort , you will now need merits which os hard to get these days.

@mundang, i'm in no hurry to rank up. It will happen when it happens. I think that's half of the problem on here actually, people expecting things to happen overnight and rank up quickly. Slow and steady wins the race!  :)

Can i also just say thanks to all that have taken something from this post, always good to hear of people being motivated.  ;)

Let me give you a tip. Quoting the original post in full is redundant and annoying. It gets you put on merit awarders' ignore lists, and that makes it harder for you to earn merits. I'm doing this to you as soon as I've made this post, and I hope it will be an example to other new members. Just read the advice threads, and you will see it is a repeated theme. I know it is far easier to just agree with posters, and not bother to read anything. but if you do this constantly, then you just become an annoying polluter and most people will start to ignore you.

I confuse this is a for merit post. I saw tons of posts like this, in Meta and in this board, they try to make the post is their own unique content but all posts have same meaning, same advices.

With all due respect here Xiaolongnu- how you can say that about my post when i looked at your post history and you are quite simply a serial spammer and nothing else! Your post history is littered with bounty entries and spam. People like yourself are everything that is wrong with this place and you should really think before you write/speak!

Ironically one of your "friends" has merited your post which is an absolute disgrace really. There is nothing meritable about anything you say or have ever said on here.

Not that i really have to justify myself to you, but the fact there are MANY positive responses (one of which just bumped this thread up weeks later, so i seen your post only now) tells its own story. Meaning it has gave a little bit of hope and inspiration to others who are at least trying to be part of the community!!  ::)

If the new user will be ambitious and will be trying do everything what is possible to increase own rank he probably will achieve success and high rank in less than 2 months like you writing but it is still hard task which need a lot of time
