Title: How do I setup a miner to mine solo if the pool is attacked?

Asked on Alternate Currencies sub-forum (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=48086.0), as I'm planning to mine Litecoin (http://litecoin.org), but I imagine the answer is pretty much the same as Bitcoin.

You would rather want to set up an automatic backup pool on a mining program like cgminer.  That way you actually have a chance of making money.

cgminer doesnt work on litecoin.
the current minerd does not resume if connection is lost for more than 30sec and has no option i see to set backup pools :)
