Title: New PC
Post by: lolmiepp on October 15, 2011, 07:01:05 PM
Hey Guys,

I know this is a stupid question, but since i don;t know for sure i'll just ask it:

I am upgrading my pc with a new ssd :), so i'll install a new windows.
is it enough to just copy my wallet and then paste it on the new bitcoin client on the new OS?
or should i store the bitcoins on an online wallet, and just send them to my new bitcoin client?
(which online wallet is trustworthy?)

Thanks for the help!

Your bitcoins are bound to your wallet file, there's no need to start online transactions if you are upgrading your OS.
Just make sure you have a couple backups in safe places. :)

Your wallet.dat file is like a wallet. You can store it on a flashdrive and drop it into any installation of the client on any computer. Note that it may take awhile to update the blockchain when you first start the client. And that client version 0.4.0 and later will encrypt you wallet and render it unusable on earlier versions.

Just keep wallet file secure.

I forgot once to backup my wallet.dat file.
I've lost 5 bitcoin or something, wont happen again to me:P

Always backup you wallet.dat file on a save place:P

I wouldn't trust any online wallet web site. All you need to do is put your old wallet in the bitcoin "roaming" directory and once the block chain downloads all your funds will show up.
