Title: KnC Wallet
Post by: Syke on February 24, 2014, 04:48:26 AM
KnC Wallet appears to be an illegal fork. Not only is the source not available, but the terms of service include many terms that violate the GPL license.

Thanks for letting me know. KnC contacted me while their fork was still in development. They assured me they'll release the source very shortly, so I'll assume they'll "play nicely" for now.

The EULA thing is indeed news to me. I'll mail them about it.

KnC released the source, and they also updated their terms -- although I haven't had time to re-read through it so far.

they did release their source
but i think they need to reconsider the licensing
the eula states the software is shipped in two blocks, but in fact it is one single source tree
apparently they added
Code:
/*
 * This is KnC Software
 * Please see EULA for more information
 */
to all new classes.

the eula contains a few clauses that are incompatible with the GPL, such as
Quote
If you are under the age of 18 you must get your parent or guardian’s permission to download and use the KnC Software which forms a part of the App.

It's definitely an improvement.

13.1 This EULA takes effect upon your download and/or use of the App

No. I refuse to agree to any EULA to use GPL softare. Period.

Where this EULA contradicts the rights in the App licensed under the GNU General Public License v.3, the terms of the GNU General Public License v.3 will prevail in respect of the contradictory part only.

Ah, I see, they're trying to EULA access to their Server. That's fine, they can do whatever they want to their Server. I don't have to use it. The GPL prevails, and I can use the app and/or sources however I wish, as long as I don't use their Server.

Thanks for the heads up.  This is what I was worried about.

What does this mean? How can the KnC miners be on a fork?

It's a wallet.  Source code has been forked.  Look at the forum you're in.

the wallet is bugged too. if u have 0.0015 and send 0.0015. it errors out due to not enough to cover transaction fee. but then you cant edit the amount without exiting the app, thn opening it again to start again

Didn't work for me, "invalid phone number".

The ability to send money to your contacts seems like a nifty idea, but the execution is really bad. Even if they fixed their software, are they going to chase all improvements in Schildbach's wallet forever?

Only running the directory service, or specifying some protocol to do it, and inviting all other wallets to use it would make much more sense. It would be cheaper too as this forever fork will only cost them money.

for the sake of the hilarity of the idea, i just couldnt avoid going through with the idea.

so here it is.

using a 'online sms to web' service to get a few numbers and an android emulator. i did this:
1. i downloaded KnC wallet.
2. i put a sms number in,
3. got the 0.0015
4. sent it to a address i owned.
5. uninstalled the app.
6. repeated 1-5

with the multiple bitmills i then purchased an item from KnC's competitor.

thank you KnC for making your competitor more profit at your expense.
