They are just rebranding the company to "Gox" and pushing it as an acquire. New board and management of course so if they can clean up the image, they may have a solid thing going in the future.

What would be the motivation for the acquiring company to take on a crapload of debt/liabilities instead of just writing their own exchange and starting new?

There is literally no reason for that to be there as a placeholder other than for people to see it and speculate on it.

Exactly! and taking on a load of potential lawsuits too...
Nobody would acquire Gox at any price.

I think the sourcecode is just put there by Mark to buy more time. Smoke and mirrors my friends... There were many days when we saw poor performance on stage from this guy's part. For how long you'll still believe it's MAGIC? It's a scam.

If only it would be possible to buy them without the liabilities. :)

Hundreds of thousands of customer accounts really counts for something as there is no big rush of people trying to get into Bitcoin at the moment making it difficult to build volume on new exchanges - and a good percentage of these customers are rich people who just want to get back to trading.

Turning Gox around would bring a massive amount of credibility and attention to the acquirer.

I admit to having a vested interest in Gox coming back from the grave but seriously, the flipside of a broken company like this can be serious profits if new management get it right. Happens often in the world of business.

BTW I don't believe the crisis document, the HTML, or any of this new material that has come to light over the past 24 hours.

Could be, but someone is working to put something on the front page at some point. Every now and then a bunch of extra code shows up in the source, and then disappears shortly after. It's not "abandoned" at this point.

If they were trying to rush through a takeover at this point, it would explain the radio silence until all the signatures are in place. It could be a decoy of course, but to what purpose? Buying time at this point is fairly meaningless at this point. That said, putting a comment in the source suggesting a takeover makes no sense. It's entirely unnecessary so most likely it was put there for a purpose. The circulated "internal" document is an obvious fake imo, and nothing from there should be taken into account when trying to explain current events.

There is also this, less promising, evidence:

EDIT: Please excuse me posting this. It is a hoax I fell for.

Then of course there's some fun:

https://www.mtgox.com/img/pdf/insolvency-Announcement.backup

Now what is that you may ask?

Well ... notice it doesn't give a 404 error?

Click on this to see what it looks like if it doesn't exist:

That is a sure fire signal that a file called insolvency-Announcement.backup exists on the mtgox servers.

No it isn't. It just means that everything with the .backup extension is being restricted.

Try: https://www.mtgox.com/img/pdf/Rannasha_is_awesome.backup -- you'll get the same Access Denied error. While https://www.mtgox.com/img/pdf/Rannasha_is_awesome.pdf gives a regular not-found-error.

Once liquidators come in, I am sure a lot of people will make offers for the source code and/or domain name

The brand is quite frankly so toxic that I don't believe it has any value.

Why would anyone buy Gox? We're heading for liquidation, selling everything, followed by repayments to customers in the class action (of a small percentage of amount owed), and a criminal suit for Mark, for fraud, trading while insolvent, and operating as an unlicensed bank.
