Title: Sorting System
Post by: freighttrain on August 11, 2018, 11:45:53 AM
I was wondering if it was possible to have a sorting system on this forum to help newbies get important information and answers from experienced forum members.
There are many low quality posts on the forum. To get a satisfactory answer, one has to scroll until one gets tired. So I thought, "Can we have a 'sort by' button at the top of every board and thread so that newbies and everyone would get posts from say Legendary, Hero and other ranks"?

It's probably better for newbies just to post the questions they have in places like Bitcoin Technical Support, meta...

If you have a specific question, you can turn it to google and see if anything from this site, reddit or stackoverflow come up. I think a sorting system would be too much effort for the admins to program with very little response.

It's probably easier to dump the crap threads, or alternatively, create a board for responsible and reputable new members.

Idea is good but rather "short by " it's better to open a board like suggested by hilariousetc- Hidden boards as a reward for high merited users and reporters (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4854646.0) . But bard shouldn't be hide. It should be visible but every one will not able to post except reputed member's.
If someone hero and legendary it doesn't guaranty he will make quality post.

yes that is possible

but in reality, is that most newbies only ask about Merit, can't post pictures, why my account is banned, whether selling / buying an account is permissible, about red trust and many more questions/information that already there are answers in the pinned posts.

I think it is not necessary to have (e.g a sort button) to find valuable information. So far, if I want to find the info useful see here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=toptopicsat), assume that the amount of Merit in specific posts shows essential information.

I think it's better to create a child board for beginners in each local to avoid those common questions about bitcoin, altcoin and the forum itself. Some avid readers in the local always seeing topics that is already asked by some people. It might be effective because the first section where people discover things in the forum is the local.

The sorting system is also applicable to some threads like "sort by most merits" since the merit system is very effective for those intelligent and informative contents. In my case, there are some of my contents that is really helpful for beginners but it's locked now and can't be bump. Newbies that wanted some little idea about the forum will ask again to that specific topic, this is also the time where newbie learns to shitpost.

The new members are the life blood of the forum ( well the few good ones anywy). If they aren't encouraged and helped, then the forum will sink further into the cesspit, as the established members move on to new pastures. This is why I believe that a clean and well moderated board for new members is so important for the forum.

the life blood of the forum ~ a pretty good allusion  :D

The main problem is their (newbies) motivation in here (forum) for what. It will be complicated to repair if the ultimate goal is to get earning even though this forum provides space to earn it.

Are you done with the pinned topics of the forum. Actually 90 percent of newbie queries are redundant and already explained there. You need to understand the forum first (Different boards and sub boards)before putting up your queries. Asking a "Mining specific question" in "Beginner s and Help Board" will not be a good choice.

Sorting will not be helpful as it can break the logical flow of discussion. Rank does not guarantee a high quality post. Do not read beyond third page of topics if reading make you tired  because it is very rare that you will got something new after third page. Avoid reading megathreads and speculative topics.

The new members are the life blood of the forum

I hope they are..  :D

The new generation of members, most of them are just attracted because of the bounty campaigns here and I just realized recently that some of them didn't even visit the local board. Also, the worst part, they have so many accounts that will only use for bounties. Creating multiple accounts that can match the allocated income of the higher ups.

The forum admins need to decide if that is the ultimate goal, or if it is to return to being an information and training forum for Bitcoin, and major cryptos. In the meantime, it is losing good members, and once the forum has been rejected by peoplr, it is harder to win them back.

Just learn how to efficiently use the search (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=search) function
or ask for Jet Cash's Ignore List and apply it to your own profile :P That could minimize the spam.

This (or similar) was mentioned already:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3628036.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3628036.0)
but nothing happened after, so maybe somehow we could put those ignore lists somewhere, where it's accessible for everyone (maybe on the FitToTalk forum, because it also help newbies to learn how to use bitcointalk...)
There's no solution for the problem of the users who are on the original ignore lists but have improved their posting skills since... so I know it's not a 100% reliable solution, but around 99,9% at least :)

I think some others have got a better ignore system than mine. I have got an appeal site, but nobody uses it because I haven't published the current list.

I was thinking of creating a pseudo-board with links to good ( in my opinion ) threads, but that is a fair bit of work, and it doesn't help with the basic problem, and that is the decision as to what the future of Bitcoin Talk is to be.

Anybody is welcome to join the firt to talk project, and maybe we should sponsor some BT threads and list those. They would need to be self-moderated by the thread starter, as they would become spam fests if it was noticed that they had become premium threads. I've been deleting some of my Bitcoin Talk projects that didn't garner any interest - the academy for example, so maybe I'll add a premium thread list as a new project.
