Title: Average price to mine 1 BTC
Post by: wobber on October 17, 2011, 05:32:26 PM
Hi. Can we find out or corroborate data to compute the world-wide price to generate 1 BTC? Also per-country reports would be nice.

I don't have this info offhand but the StackExchange (http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/) might be a better format for this question.

Well just calculate the average difficulty and use that with the regular price calculation since hashrate and difficulty have a linear correlation this should be valid.

A more sophisticated version would take data from country specific power costs and the adaptation rate in those countries into account (data is only available for the wallet clients not miners though)
To get any more precise it would need to have data concerning the historical hashrate of the pools and where there miners come from.
A precise calculation should be possible but it would be difficult to obtain the some of the data needed for that (pool logfiles) so unless you convince every pool to share the data needed for the calculation your best bet is to estimate the average power cost.

And the last factor can only be estimated .. the efficiency of the average mining operation per hashrate along with the 'sunk costs' of the prices of the actual hardware.

Since hashing efficiency per KW should be much less in the beginning...

I estimated 3.6 USD/BTC yesterday on a similar discussion. This assumes 1.5 Mhash/J and 0.15 $/kWh.

Use your own values to find out your own cost: http://bitcoinx.com/profit/index.php

Keep in mind my original post was only valid at the time I posted it, and since the difficulty has changed that figure would also have changed.
