Open a Command prompt, change to the directory of the file and execute it. It will do nothing.

Open a second Command prompt, change to the same directory and run the same file with the "help" parameter at the end. It will give you the list of possible commands.

I know it can be hard for you initially, but play with it for a while and you will understand how it works.

Good luck

You first need 7zip to extract it.

And don't ask me where you can find it but Google for it or ask your mom...

I was able to get the program running with NamecoinGUI and set up GUI Miner to do some solo mining.  Is there anyway to check if that solo mining is working.  Its showing hashs being checked.  Thanks.

Yet another crappy alternate coin that requires me to use command prompt?  Do we seriously not expect any "normal average Joes" to ever start using these things???

Namecoin is not a pure alternate coin, and it's not a get-rich-quick scheme. It's not even planned to be used as a mainstream currency. With that, the development is mostly like any other open-source volunteer based project, which is slow. If you don't want to use it now, just don't. There will be new services and software popping up in the following years and you can start using them when it's more convenient for you. No harm done. :)

Sorry, just my $.02.

I just don't understand how the userfriendly gui is not step 1.

But I'm no programmer, so I'll be wrestling with learning how to use namecoins tonight.  I downloaded the blockchain last night, but I haven't gotten any addresses yet.  We'll see what I can figure out next.  It's just a steep learning curve for me.

Do you put the siding on a house before you build it? same thing your asking basically.  It can be made nice and pretty later.

Not that hard to get an address. http://dot-bit.org/InstallAndConfigureNamecoin (http://dot-bit.org/InstallAndConfigureNamecoin)

Aren't most of the tools CLI vs GUI? especially the miners.

Also, usually, too many users too early is a bad thing. You need enthusiasts first to test the grounds, let the specifications evolve, etc. When you go mainstream, the specs become as if they are written on stone and workarounds begin. So, sometimes being user friendly is not a good thing at all. Not talking specifically about Namecoin though, I think there already are some GUI tools for it (that need to be tested). ;)

If you don't use a command prompt how do you configure your Internet facing nameservers? If you don't configure nameservers you really can't have much reason to use a distributed DNS registry..

Just because NameCoin doesn't solve your problems doesn't mean it doesn't solve mine.

with all due respect, google sez there are GUIs for nameserver configuration.

Having said that, someone could adapt Crutches pseudo-gui I build for GG (which is 100% opensource thingie) for Namecoin, and add special tabs for "advanced" commands.

It only requires skills on the level of writing .bat files.

( Rant time )

Sure there are GUIs but no-one who knows what they are doing would touch them because they don't help.

I worked with people who used a GUI to configure DNS once, they messed up time after time and getting them to set reverse DNS correctly was an utter nightmare. I can change my DNS in vi and check it into subversion in a few seconds, if I screw up I can get the old version back in a few seconds. Anyone that needs a GUI to configure a nameserver should read the o'reilly book until they don't need a GUI anymore.

If I have found a block will that be in the debug report for namecoin.  What would it say in the debug log if this is true.  Thanks.

ok, so obviously, I'm dumb....

Where do I start.  I've been trying to follow http://dot-bit.org/InstallAndConfigureNamecoin with no success.

I've been messing with cmd, but don't know how to change "the directory it's referencing"

I think I used to be able to do that with \\E:/ or something liek that, but I'm drawing a blank.

I think I have the whole blockchain downloaded, I'm just trying to get an address to be able to claim my merge namecoins on eligius.  heh.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well after completely failing with command prompt and still having no namecoin address.... I'm installing .net 4 something  and then hopefully this guy's gui will work for me.

just do it, then
I mean you already know how to, I'm sure I could do it but I'd have to figure out how you did it

Where are you stuck? Namecoin uses a default directory, I don't know which is it in Windows but you shouldn't have to worry about that. What do you get with `namecoind getinfo`?

you need to know a little bit about the command promt to use it.

so you've downloaded namecoin, lets assume you have put it in c:\namecoin

start the command prompt (it should default to your user folder or similar) type cd.. and press enter, do this untill you get to the root, then type cd\namecoin and press enter

type namecoind and press enter this will run the program and you wont be able to do anything in that command prompt

start another commant promt and go to the directory, type namecoind help to see all the commands

type namecoind getnewaddress to get an address

type namecoind getinfo to see the version/block number etc etc

edit: this is for windows, i'm not sure if its any different in other OS

or just hold shift, right click and click open command prompt here when you're already in the folder

Do a `namecoind listtransactions`, you should see the generate transaction there. It takes 120 blocks for generation transactions to be confirmed.
