Title: Litecoin - some newbie questions
Post by: terahurts on October 18, 2011, 01:08:21 PM
I've been lurking around here for a week or so, after seeing a link somewhere to Bitcoin, and then getting interested in the whole cyptocurrency thing.  I'm mainly just playing around, pool mining with litecoin @ ~7Khs and trading back and forth for pennies worth of BTC since I've got a reasonable desktop CPU but a poor GPU (90Mhs).  I've got a couple of (probably blindingly obvious) questions:

1. Solo mining or pool mining?  Am I likely to mine more LTC soloing or with a pool?  How do I go about working it out?

2. If I was solo mining and wanted to add additional CPUs on my network is it as simple as pointing the miner at <myipaddress>:<rpc port>?

1.assuming 0fee pool that pays out txn with blocks you should get the same over time
solo you get a whole block every now and then , with a pool you get small regular payouts - your choice really
I have heard comments from "i will only ever solo" to 'the time for soloing is over - I am joining a pool" ;)

2.you need to edit your litecoin.conf file and to look like
server=1
rpcallowip=*
rpcuser=user
rpcpassword=password

you can leave the other stuff commented out
then point your network machines to the ip of the pc with litecoin on it by editing the .bat files for the miner machines to ip of the litecoin machine and set the same user/pass.
hope thats a help

Thanks for the reply Graet, I think I'll probably stick to pool mining - at least until I make my first million!  ;D
