Title: [400 BTC LOST] Can someone help me to contact Stefan Thomas from WeUseCoins.com?
Post by: Freefallr on February 26, 2014, 03:24:13 PM
Hey Bitcoiners,

I have found a public address with over 400 BTC linked to it which belongs to Stefan Thomas / justmoon, untouched since 2011. I would really like to contact him, because it's more than 200.000 USD worth of BTC right now which is really a huge amount of money. Does anyone of you have an idea how to contact him the best? I don't know if he is just intentionally hoarding so much coins since years or if he just forgot about it. Maybe he has the private key backuped somewhere and can gain back access to his coins, if he has forogt about it.

This is what I tried:

  • Email to moon@justmoon.net (one of his companies I guess), info@weusecoins.com, help@weusecoins.com
  • Phone call to the number of the WHOIS entry of justmoon.net
  • Personal Message on bitcointalk.org

I really appreciate any help! Thanks a lot!

What do you mean you think? This seems a bit suspicious to me.

I think these are his Twitter and LinkedIn profiles though:

Hey guys,

no, I just found an address which he mentioned a few years ago here at BitcoinTalk.org which almost 100% belongs to him, and this address contains almost 500 BTC. It is NOT the 7000 BTC wallet that he lost some time ago, but another one.

I also had my first progress! He wrote back from moon@justmoon.net, but he thinks that I mean the 7000 BTC story from some time ago and told me that many contact him about that and kindly asked me to not write him again. However, I have written him back - I hope he reads it and I get an answer.

If he is not interested anymore just send me the wallet and I will try to bruteforce it. I will send you half of it, if I found the password.  :)

As I said, I dind't found a wallet file, but just the address / public key which I now know belongs to him and I'm desperately trying to contact him.

Haha. What does it matter if you have his address or public key? If you had his private ones he might be interested.

How would this benefit to him if he don't have the private key anymore? Stop emailing him you just wasting his time.

This is the golden question. If he has the private keys somewhere, then he would get access to it.

If he had the private keys he would already have access.

Maybe he just forgot that it exists? If he doesn't have his private keys anymore then it's okay and I will not disturb him ever again, but I don't want someone to just lose or forget a few hundred thousand dollars.

WTF, you honestly don't get it.

No private key, no coins.

doesn't matter :D

only if you're the real Stefan you still need to have private  keys to be able to use the coins  :-\

Haha, yeah. The private keys are the coins. If you lose your coins you've lost the keys, not the public addresses. You really need to read up on Bitcoins.

Sorry, I think I didn't express myself right. I know that you need the private key to access the coins. This is what I have meant:

Plausible scenario: the user "justmoon" created a Bitcoin wallet some years ago, filled it with coins (and used it) and then for some reason forgot about it. The reason why I try to contact him now is to ask him if he knows about his wallet that he didn't use for years and deliberately hasn't spent the coins yet, or if he just forgot about it. If he forgot about it and now finds out again because I reminded him, well.. Great for him (if he has the private keys backuped somewhere). And if not, then it's okay too.

I read some cases on Reddit where users forgot about their wallets filled with lots of Bitcoins and find it again years later. Maybe this is also a similar case.

It's not. If they've lost the coins the public address doesn't matter.

I'm confused  ???

I don't think you're the only one. It seems the OP has found a public address with 500 coins in it and somehow thinks he's found some lost coins or something. He thinks because he's found it he can tell the owner about it and give him his coins back. Or maybe not haha.

Haha. I can't work out if he's trolling or not. It's hard to tell with some of the truly moronic questions you get from half of these newbs.

NO, I cannot give him back any coins of course - I neither have the private key to this public address nor I have access to his wallet file / his coins / whatever!

1. I read some old bitcointalk.org forum posts
2. In a pretty old thread, I found a public address from an old Bitcoin user named "justmoon"
3. I was curious if the user was still using his address
4. Checked it on blockchain.info, found out that the address is linked to almost 500 BTC, unused since 2011
5. Was interested in who the owner of these BTC is
6. Did some research, found it out
7. Trying to contact him for interest, just to see if he intentionally hoards so much coins since years or if he just forgot about the coins

I doubt that one of the Administrators of this very forum would forget about Bitcoin holdings...

Anyways, he is now CTO at RippleLabs, maybe you can reach him there somehow. I am quite sure he doesn't need a reminder that he owns some BTC though.

Got a reply - he actually lost the private keys linked to this public address and is aware of it, therefore he couldn't use it anymore since years.

If he had the private key he could have already spend it. Public keys is useless with out the private key.

I don't see a need for this thread. It's like contacting someone and telling them, hey I see you have $200,000 in your account. Do you have access to it?

definitely nice going from you :)

doesn't matter if he can't use the coins, it would be nice to tell him you have the coins just to remind him why he shouldn't forget his bitcoins :D
