Title: New BIOS in Sapphire TOXIC r9 280x decrease hashrate ?
Post by: Ll_lkasz on February 26, 2014, 09:28:31 PM
I bought 2 new Sapphire R9 280X TOXIC and I have problem with hashrate.

In those cards is new bios version 015.043.000.005.000000
Im able to get max 600 khash on it.

I have also 18x other TOXICS with BIOS 015.041.000.000.000000, and I get 760-800 khas without any problem.

I've tried to flash bios to the old one but cards doesnt accept it.

Any ideas ?

Same problem here, also, tried BIOS :
 - 015.039
 - 015.041
none of the 2 works.

I am also getting only 620khash.

Damn you sapphire :-(

The problem is "015.043.000.005.000000" Cards are now using Elpida EDw2032BBBG Memory.

The previous version were using hynix memory, which would explain their great hash rates.

At the moment stock BIOS :
GPU = 1050
Mem = 1500
Threads = 8193
powertune = -20

I am able to get 730 Kh/s

On my other card with the hynix memory i was easily pushing 770 Kh/s With the Bios undervolted to 1.112v

I am so disappointed in the Sapphire TOXIC r9 280x cards, now that they have Elpida memory.

I thought TOXIC cards were supposed to be the best of the best of the best? So much for that.

What a blatant bait-and-switch on one of the most overpriced GPUs on the market. Have fun with that.

Oh, and for the record, Gigabyte did the opposite. The initial 280x all had Elpida RAM, and their newer ones have had Hynix RAM. So there's that.

@ BitOrigin

with the ~same setting :
GPU = 1070
VDDC = 1090
Mem = 1500
Threads = 8192
powertune = -20

I am getting a steady 740khash on 2 TOXIC and 1 triX

The new one with 015.043.000.005... with the same settings => 619 avg, and I have much more variation than the olders

Do you mean that there is nothing to do...?
No wizard stuff that can help...?

If so this TOXIC is going right back to seller.

Another question, is there a way to know for sure, the kind of memory used before bying the card?

Thanks

I have two new toxics and I can't break 660 KH/s. None of the techpowerup bioses would let me boot with the older bios versions... does that mean we are screwed?

I'm getting 718khs (015.043):

tc 8192
gpu-engine 1020
gpu-memclock 1500

But it's too low for "top class" Toxic :(.

If toxic is your only choice, they are probably still a good option if you aren't paying a premium for them. They are running as well as my older gigabyte card (660-700),  less than my dual-x (710-720) but cooler, and they are seemingly fine with a decent undervolt.

anyone have a good bios or settings for the newer version of the toxic? I have been able to, with a lot of optimizing, get my card up to 690 KH/s, but >700 would be amazing!
-I 13 -g 2 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 8193 1026/1500 are best setttings for me and get me about 690 KH/s

what memory do you have on your toxic?

also try 1100 core 1500 mem

Try sgminer

With this configuration

-xintensity 4 -w 64 -g 2 --shaders 2048 --thread-concurrency 8193 --lookup-gap 2 --gpu-engine 1030 --gpu-memclock 1500 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-vddc 1.100 --auto-fan --temp-target 67 --expiry 1 --scan-time 1 --queue 0

I get around 720kh/s
You can also try to undervolt to 1050 1046

Oh damn....

I've now got 3 280x toxics. 2 I got a few months ago and run at 750kh/s.

And the other I just bought. Plugged it in and with the same settings its not even getting close to 750.... more like 650kh/s.

So disappointing... will probably send it back if I can't get any better results.

If you can send it back go with 290 tri x

I have same issue i can go no more than 720

I have two Toxic, one with the 41 BIOS and ond with the 43. Both cards deliver the same hashrate - 750kh/s (TC 8192, core 1080, mem 1500 ). The Toxic with ne new BIOS version runs hotter though which makes it quite a task to keep it below 70 degrees...

So:
- decrease in hashrate: NO
- increasing temperature: YES

But maybe I am just lucky...

Thanks for replies...

I have actually pushed it up to 737kh/s now. Still not the solid 750kh/s I was getting from the other ones by a little bit but much better then 660 kh/s.

I had to up with TC by 1 to 8193 (from 8192).

Also clocked the engine a little slower to 1075 (from 1080).

Memory 1500 on all.

They are all running with VDDC 1.2 (have not risked changing bios on them yet to get lower).

I am considering sending it back for a 290 tri-x.... it is an option... the place I got it from offer 14 day money back guarantee.

Guys,

I have managed to get the new 280x toxic to 748kh/s.

To confirm it's the one with Elphida memory & bios 015.043.000.005.000000.

I switched from cgminer 1.7.2 to sgminer 4.1.0 to go higher then my previous post (the last post). I could also then increase the engine speed to 1080.

Using SG miner on my 2 oldler 280x I managed to push one to 760kh/s but the other is still on 750kh/s.

Panic over I think.

I'm now getting a problem where the hash is going down dramatically once the screen goes off and does not seem to come back up once the monitor is switched back on.

Hi everyone. First time poster here and I would like to share some info and ask for advice. I bought 4 280x TOXICs a week ago with  015.043 BIOS.Here is my setup and results:
WIN 8.1 64-bit Catalyst 13.12 + 2.9 SDK
cgminer 3.7.4 and sgminer 4.1.0 config:
"intensity" : "13",
"worksize" : "256",
"lookup-gap" : "2",
"thread-concurrency" : "8193", (8192 for some kernels)
"gpu-threads" : "2",

On 1050core/1500mem clock I get 736-740kh/s with all of the new kernels in the sgminer dir.
On 1080/1500 600-650kh/s.
On 1060/1800 ~750kh/s.
On 1150/1800 ~550kh/s.
MTJ151 can you tell what is the difference between our two setups?
I understand now that is will most likely not be possible to get 800+kh/s form these cards so my goal now is to find a stable 750-760kh/s. with decent power consumption and temps.

Title: Re: New BIOS in Sapphire TOXIC r9 280x decrease hashrate ?
Post by: MTJ151 on March 20, 2014, 02:05:06 PM
I get just over 750 kh/s with mine at 1075/1500 with following config file:

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
del *.bin
sgminer.exe --gpu-vddc=1.2 -g 2 -w 256 -I 13 --thread-concurrency=8193 --gpu-engine=1075 --gpu-memclock=1500 --auto-fan --gpu-powertune=20 --shaders 2048 -o stratum+tcp://pool-eu.hash.so:1337 -u username.worker -p pass

However after about 15 mins my hashrate drops dramatically and I will start to see some artifacts on the screen. After another 10 mins it actually seems to pick back up to 750kh/s (recovers?) and then has run the whole night at that speed.

I think the whole crashing and recovering thing is down to either drivers or possibly because I have a slight undervolt. I will me messing around with it more today to see if I can work out what's going on.

Some update here:
1060core/1800mem ~750kh/s (If I set the core @65 the card drops to ~650kh/s)
1075/1820 ~760kh/s
@MTJ151 We need to find a modded BIOS with tighter VRAM timings.Search for "Stilt BIOS"
The hardware of the cards is capable of +800kh/s but not with these timings.

I saw the Stilt stuff. I was fairly happy with 750 to be honest! I get 750 from my other 280x with the good ram.

That being said.... it would be great if we can push the cards even further!

The problem that I last posted about... getting random drops in hash power... seems to have fixed it's self now. It's like the card had to be worn in?!?!

Also try TC 8191 or 8192 just incase that's better for your particular card.
