Title: Ledger Nano S and Ledger Live questions
Post by: BitcoinArsenal on August 16, 2018, 06:56:55 PM
I've recently bought a Ledger Nano s. After some struggles at the beginning, I set up the software and hardware successfully and both work fine. However some other questions have been arisen and I hope you can help me

1) Why isn't it possible to install more than 3 apps on Ledger Nano S? How can I manage more coins?

2) Why can I install Stellar on Nano S but can not add Stellar account on Ledger Live although it is listed?

3) When it is planned to support ERC20 tokens on Ledger Live?

1) Insufficient space on Ledger, you can install only 3 or 4 apps. To use more you need to uninstall one to free some space (your keys are safe and won't be removed)
3) Can't you use MEW wallet with the Ledger Live? Because with Nano S it doesn't support ERC20 so it could be the same with L. Live...

1- because there is a limit on it's memory. However you can delete an app after using that coin and install it again when you need

2- never used those coins

3- you can use ledger nano with mew (myetherwallet), works like a charm.
You cannot use it with ledger live and it will take some time probably.

1. See the posts above.
2. Ledger Live currently only support BTC and BTC based/forked coins. You can install the apps, but only use them from a 3rd party wallet. The Ledger team plans to support other coins into the Live wallet in the near future.
3. In the future.

More details regarding question 2:

You would interact with Stellar through thier account viewer here - https://www.stellar.org/account-viewer/ (https://www.stellar.org/account-viewer/) - using your Ledger Nano to unlock your account. As mentioned, many of the coins such as ARK, NEO, VET, ICX, XLM, NANO, etc, require other wallets to allow integration with your Ledger. See here for the full list - https://www.ledger.com/pages/supported-crypto-assets (https://www.ledger.com/pages/supported-crypto-assets)

What firmware do you have installed? And what coin apps are you installing??!? ???

One of the more recent firmware updates (Firmware 1.4.1) did a lot of refactoring of the coin apps that are installed to the device (https://www.ledger.fr/2018/03/06/new-firmware-update-1-4-1-available-for-the-nano-s/)... and increased the average number that you could install to something like 8 or 10... and the absolute maximum to something like 18.

Even on the older firmwares, most people would be able to get like 5 or 6.

I'm curious as to which apps you have installed that only allow for 3??!? :o :o

I have not yet had the opportunity to try Ledger Live wallet, but I think OP have big problems with his Ledger wallet based on number of threads he open recently. As you say it is not true that only 3 apps can be installed on Ledger, I have 5-6 in this moment...

Problem is that some not BTC based coins are not supported by Ledger Live, we can install their apps on device but we need to use other interfaces to manage our coins. However, maybe OP actually found combination of 3 coin apps that take all memory device?

Even if he has, I don't see that as being much of a problem. It takes all of 10 seconds to uninstall one coin and reinstall a different one.

Indeed, I had some problems at the beginning. I had some issues with the operating system, root righs and even the USB cable that was flawed  :D However all these problems have been solved. The issues I mentioned in this thread are not really problems, I just want to know why Ledger Nano is limited to only a certain number of apps or why it does not support ERC20 tokens yet and if there are ways the overcome the limitations. These are not issues that concern only me but every Ledger nano s owner.

It does "support" ERC-20 tokens... In so far that it supports ETH.

It is just that the Ledger Live software does not support the transfer or display of the tokens attached to your ETH address. Instead, you simply use the MyCrypto or MyEtherWallet wallets in conjunction with your Ledger device to access your ETH and ERC-20 tokens.

Yes, I meant Ledger Live software actually. Excuse the indistinctness. I even manage ERC20 tokens with Ledger Nano in combination with MyEtherWallet. However I want to manage everything with one software, that is why I asked when support of ERC20 in Ledger Live is planned.

I would like to know this too. I really liked Ledger Live's monitor feature, but it doesn't watch any 3rd party wallets, only the natively supported coins. I was very hopeful of finally being able to do away with Delta and having to manually enter all my coins/trades, but I guess we are not quite there yet.

Ledger has stated that adding ERC20 support to ledger live is one of their top priorities currently.
Besides fixing bugs and adding fast and necessary features, this should be pretty far up on their to-do list.

I wouldn't be surprised if we could expect the release of ERC20 supports within a few months.

Ledger has started with ledger live supporting all currencies which have been accessible through their google chrome apps.
Since google is stopping chrome application support, they had to release a software which manages all of these coins first.

They are going to add further coins later on.
Whether they will be releasing the function to import a 'watch' wallet for all coins, or fully functional wallet elements for each currency unfortunately hasn't been stated yet.
