Title: Where do you store most of your btcs? Post by: koryu on February 28, 2014, 12:38:48 PM After mtgox stoped withdrawals a discussion started how secure btcs stored at exchanges are. Finally they revealed that they were lost.
Some exchanges said they would start doing audits and all btc are secure. I am curious where you store most of your btcs and if you changed your mind about online wallets. i expect that more people will move their btcs from exchanges into cold storage. would that lead to lower trading volumes and higher volatility? On paper and USB (redundancy) in a vault is my definition of cold storage. Preferably two vaults in two sites if you have a lot of BTC. Beware ... your computer could still fail. Ive been considering moving my blockchain.info chunk to my electrum wallet. Watching gox vanish should be a smack to the back of my head to move my shit off blockchain.info, but im not worried! I use the latter, and to me it seems it offers an absolute maximum in convenience, with very little compromise to security, while blockchain.info seems to offer no additional benefits, but lots of additions insecurity. But maybe I miss something about blockchain.info. EDIT: since it's a web wallet I guess you can use it for making purchases when you're on the go. sthg that is harder with electrum. Unfortunately, I like moving my money around and playing the alt-markets. But this is all money that is okay for me to lose. The BTC that I do have in cold storage, those really are meant to be saved. Now 15% cold / 85% exchange. This is just a matter of profit, I intend to reallocate a majority to cold storage in the next month. I'd love to establish a higher low and get back all in BTC again... Tbh I haven't been assed to learn how to set up a cold wallet, but after 'Kerpeles' Wild Ride 2014' I've decided to stop being a lazy prick and just do it. By some stroke of luck, a week or two before withdrawals were suspended I moved all my coins to another exchange after seeing so many people refer to Gox's incompetency. Wasn't many coins, but one of my luckiest btc moments ever (probably no. 1 or 2 to having a last minute change of heart about selling my ltcs and the very next day watching them double and then hit the $40 high.) Stored on electronic media in encrypted files, triple redundancy in different locations, split onto several pieces of paper carefully hidden in locations so obscure I'm not even sure where they are anymore, lol. I also have a private key engraved on a piece of metal and buried because I got bored and it sounded like fun.

If you ever decrypt your wallet while connected to the internet your PK could be compromised. If your encryption key is purely offline and never entered on a hot machine, then you will be safe, but I don't see how it is different or simpler than just keeping PK offline exactly where you are keeping your encryption key? |
