Title: Do PCIe expansion ports work?
Post by: whitesites on August 23, 2018, 03:17:47 AM
I have a mining rig with an older motherboard that only has 4 PCIe slots.  Rather than buying a new motherboard and cpu, I was wondering if I could use something like this to add more PCIe ports.https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/a8AAAOSwQHpbFuJm/s-l1600.jpg

Has anyone used these for this purpose?   Are there any issues using them?  Do the cards still hash at full speed or does the expansion card slow things down a bit?
Looking to pickup a few more 1080Ti off ebay while prices are cheap, and don't want to have to build a new rig to run them.

Check these videos (not mine): Mining. 1 to 4 PCIe extension card on MSI H67ma e35 B3 motherboard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twbxdjTcZ-A) & PCI e 1 to 4 adapter. 2 pci e slots & 4 Gtx 1060's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEcxixLsevw)

Based on the Videos, that expansion port is best used on motherboards with one or two PCI-e slots.
Theoretically, expanding a four-slot board to 16 using that wont be an issue, but buying new motherboard or rig for the additional cards is more preferable IMO.
Did you checked the price tag of that PCIe expansion port?

I used it already, and it works. Reported Hashrate has no different but sometimes when rig restarted (on purpose), some card not recognized, and it needs some restarting until the remaining cards recognized.

My Mobo Gigabyte H110 D3A and there are 10 GPU installed.

They do work and they have come down in prices a little so they are worth getting if you want a few extra GPUs and you don't want to waste money on another motherboard and CPU.

However you need to do your research first and find out if your motherboard will support them. Even if it is supported you need to check how many extra GPUs can actually run.

Each motherboard reacts differently to these, so research first before you buy them.

I have very good experience with Biostar Crypto Mining Card DCBTC2 (1:4)

I have an expansion port like that, but diferent model, for me my expansion port not worked tested in 3 different Mining MOBO and 2 diferent not mining MOBO.
My expansion port is powered one, turn on, but no graphics card shows on device manager, also ethos and Linux cant recognize too.

I have used about a dozen of these without any issues at all.

Granted I only use two ports on each one and not all four -- but I assume it would work.

This is in HP Z400 Workstation systems.

you can use them without a problem. ususal PC have 24 pcie lanes, 20 from cpu, if it is Core i, and 4 from chipset. Something like that.

Yes it is just an extension for the PCIe slot. It works just fine.

Works, but it does not make you bios handle any more videocards (8-13 depending on bios etc)
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2204115.msg33127677#msg33127677 (some testing with how it shifts the PCI addresses.
I have no mining cards to see if those could be added on top (as with the 19 slot Mobos which can take 13 video cards max).

The Acorn Nest X2G could be something else to consider. A lot more money but the PCI switch (there was another 8 USB card for about $100) might give other max number of video cards (but maybe not, it's probably the leftover lanes from CPU that dictates the number).

I’m successfully using one PCI-e to 4 PCI express adapter bought on AliExpress. It is on Z370 chipset ASRock motherboard with 4 PCI-e slots. No problem with installation and mining.
