I recently used https://get-bitcoin.com/
Pretty good.  I haven't had a problem.  However they cannot guarantee the BTC/USD price (it may be +- $0.05)

I don't know how much bitcoins do you want to purchase and what your target is.
Do you want to speculate with bitcoins then its true mtgox is the best because the traffic is here the best.

But if you want purchase and hold your bitcoins and use it for paymence, if you don't need 1000+ bitcoins and you want to prefer the "opencurrency" - movement then there are for example
bitmarket.eu or intersango.com better because they don't have a transaction fee.

In the Trade wiki page you'll find a list of exchanges.

Keep in mind there are different kinds.

MtGox and Tradehill are escrowed exchanges. With these, you have much less chance of being scammed, and you may trade more quickly since you don't need to match different orders and analyze the trustworthiness of different people.  But with these you'll very likely be traced - with MtGox, you certainly will.

There are the person-to-person exchanges, like bitmarket.eu and OTC. These are much more anonymous, but you have the risk of trading with a scammer.

And there are the most anonymous of all, which are cash-in-the-mail. These ones have the inconvenience of being very slow, and the danger of having your cash mail stolen by someone of the post office.

Escrowed exchanges are made for bitcoin investors and speculators but not for a open-currency.
But is it this type of revolution what we want?
I mean it is ok to invest in bitcoins but i dont support the speculations and daytrading at mtgox and i mean too that escrowed exchanges will animate to speculate with the bitcoin.

I prefer real P-2-P exchanges like bitmarket.eu and i don't see a higher risk to be scammed because the bitcoins which were sold are frozen and the seller don't have access to this. So it isn't a real P-2-P because the seller must sent bitcoins to their bitmarket.eu - account. ;-)
I did a lot of trades at bitmarket.eu and i never had problems.

Not only... a company that has to trade large volumes daily due to how their business operate can't afford to search trustworthy matching offers all the time. Particularly those which need to convert immediately to avoid volatility risks.

I suppose you're using a method of payment that doesn't allow chargebacks, right? I believe that in some countries such option barely exists...

This is a risk but do you have the nickname, email and some feedback then the risk is comparable low and similar as ebay.

MtGox is the biggest site, they have the largest volume, I think. But since they got hacked, some people lost its thrust in them.
Right after that, in terms of volume, comes Tradehill. Till now I only used Tradehill since they supported SEPA deposits, but at the moment, they don't.

There are lots of smaller Trading sites on https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade. Some of they also take comissions, some are free. But note that most of them have only small volume, so if you plan to buy or sell larger amounts of bitcoin they won't be the right choice for you.

The safest way would be to meet some bitcoiner in person and exchange some coins for your national currency.

The typical exchanges are not a good idea, as you link your bank account to the address you withdraw the coins to. Some exchanges have "lost" all the coins, others have had the password of its users leaked.

I'm in the UK and use Intersango to sell my bitcoins and the money is in my bank the same day. Sending money to them should be just as quick but I havn't done that. I've no idea how long it takes with EUR and USD but if you're in the UK, Intersango is easily the best option.

I used them for a small purchase and had no problems, can mail payment so there is no electronic paper trail.

I would never use Liberty Reserve for anything above $20, it's the one true currency used by fraud's and people that will scam you. I've had experiences with vps/hosting/gift cards/bitcoin/currency exchange & many more 90% of the time when someone asks for liberty reserve you must walk away!

check the exchanges and find out which is easiest to get money into and out of (and the cost) - that is likely to be the more influential aspect of your decision

Mt. Gox is easy. You can use Dwolla.com to take straight from your bank account. Takes 4 days to complete.
Transfer to Mt. Gox. Buy bitcoins. Spend!
