Post by: BitcoinQTlol on March 01, 2014, 08:01:00 PM
Downloaded a live TailsOS USB

Boot into TailsOS and download Bitcoin-QT Linux,

Disconnected from internet

Generate new addresses

dumpprivkey [address]

write down / save private keys to USB / paper

restarted Tails to clear everything from the Amnesia folder

logged into windows and logged into my blockchain.info wallet

send bitcoin to public addresses of cold storage

is this cold storage & safe?

Sounds like a basic step-by-step guide to a coldstorrage yes.

Just make sure you write your priv. keys correct. ;)

Yes, thats a pretty good sequence. If I were being even more paranoid I'd say the TailsOS should never be connected to the Internet, so put Bitcoin-QT on a USB stick before you start, and install it from that. Check the MD5 of the Bitcoin-QT on your USB matches a trusted source and you should be good.

Reasoning: if you're compromised while on the Internet downloading Bitcoin-QT, anything you do afterwards is unsafe, unless you're physically disconnected from the Internet afterwards. You say "disconnect from Internet" but if that's just disabling the Interface in the UI, thats not good enough and a trojan could easily re-enable it.

I physically unplugged my router and there isn't any connections that I can connect to around here but yes that does sound more safer!

Yes, pretty decent cold storage, just make sure you have the QR code printed or something

Yes, that seems alright.

I would actually take a photo of the QR code if you're only planning on having it printed on paper. Spill something on the QR code and you're screwed.

Take a photo of the QR code, save it as a JPG, chuck that onto an encrypted USB and secure it, just in case.

You can never be too careful...
