Title: Follow users by merit instead of threads
Post by: bg002h on August 25, 2018, 03:24:01 AM
Is there a way to search for hero or higher members with at least 10 merit and make that a list to follow? So many threads and so many posts aren’t worth the time…but a more twitter like view of bitcointalk would be cool. Might bring us old timers back.

I don't think 10 merits is a good filter. I see a lot of high ranked members posting trash in Altcoin Discussion & relating boards. I think most of the high ranks in this Meta board fit your need. They're mostly old members of the forum, dedicated and knowledgeable.

Don't all hero+ members have at least 10 merit anyway? Or are you meaning 10 merits in addition to the initial merit?

I don't think you can narrow it down that far, but here's a thread by someone who has run the merit numbers almost every way possible.

Bitcointalk Merit Dashboard (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4428616.0)

If you follow the link in that OP, you can use the "Rankings" tab to find the list of most merited users. That could give you a nice point to start from, I think they are even linked to their profile here in BCTC. If nothing else check out the rest of DdmrDdmr's threads, or ask them if they can find that within the data they've scraped already.

*unnecessary*Like the idea of bringing the old timers here those legends should be here. You can donate as well to request for particular features as well I think Theymos just watching and waiting for someone to raise new idea that can help improve this forum.

I agree with the Blue.

I love that you mention to someone with Donator status that they could donate more to request a feature be added.

I can assure you Theymos is not just sitting back watching and waiting for someone to suggest improvements. There is a thread running about community suggestions (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4893744.0). Theymos did reply there (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4893744.msg44432901#msg44432901).

Hmm, if you really want to follow the forum's veterans then worry no more because you can easily distinguish them since their names are already quite popular here. Some good users are Quickseller, Vod, actmyname, jackg, nullius (with expert-like postings) and theymos of course.

You've got a point somehow, I just disagree a little bit about the "10 merit" thing. Because for me, we don't have the right to discount every merit they have, whether few or many, it still matters and proves that they are not a trash.

This tool i made has all the information you need to extract that list

You can find information and examples here:

Since everyone is promoting their merit statistic sites, BPIP is looking for a statistic partner.

You will design the chart.
I will program the chart.
You will promote the page.
You are compensated.

I just have too many good ideas to spend time thinking of cool merit statistics.  I can provide your chart with real time data.  :)

P.S.  I like Piggy's Tool as well.

I get what you mean by that. Sometime even if we follow one thread, it is hard to keep track on it if they are too many spammer comes to the thread and start doing their job. The spammers also help to bump (sometimes) an useless thread and bury other useful thread in the latter page.

snip

That can be arranged. I think some members here are already working on compiling the idea you mentioned. Also, you can check the top merited accounts on forum.  Usually those accounts posted quality posts. Like the idea of bringing the old timers here those legends should be here. You can donate as well to request for particular features as well I think Theymos just watching and waiting for someone to raise new idea that can help improve this forum.

The ideas are compiled in hillariousandco's thread and even thyemos already reply and make some insight to the ideas compiled there. I dont know if this idea is on that list or not, but looking to this as new thread, i guess it is not there yet, but OP, you can suggest this idea to hillariousandco's thread.

Title: Follow users by topic and quality of posting

I think the best thing would be to build your own friends or follow list.  There is a pretty wide diversity of knowledge and experience amongst the better posters here, and you may not want to follow all of them. Technical, statistical analysis of Bitcoin, forum research, and global economics all have different thread characteristics, and it would be great if we could follow topics that are of primary interest to us. The boards are supposed to provide this selection, but there is so much spam and cross board posting, that it would be better to follow specific members across the boards, rather than hunt through the bounty hunters threads that are constant bumped on most boards.

I don't think at least 10 Merits (earned) would be a good criteria. It's better to take at least 100 earned Merits as a threshold value. However I have scraped users earned more than 100 Merits in addition to initial 1000 Merits, from Merit dashboard (https://public.tableau.com/profile/ddmrddmr#!/vizhome/BitcointalkMeritDashboard/GlobalSummary) created by DdmrDdmr (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1582324). All the users below mentioned were already Legendary Members before the introduction of Merit system.  I'm hoping you can reunion with your old friends ;)

Just a minor point about that list. I was "only" a hero when the merit system was introduced.

Thanks "Jet Cash" for pointing out my mistake and I will correct it. I will remove your name and also"hilariousetc" from this list and add both of you for the second list (Members who earned more than 100 Merits in addition to initial 500 Merits) of which I'm hoping to add when I'm back in laptop.

I'm starting to wonder if merits are the best indicators of interesting posters. There isn't much point in following me for technical information about Bitcoin or Bitcoin price analysis for example, but I'm number ten in the most merited - I think Hilarious has just overtaken me. If your political views are just right of Attila the Hun, then you might agree with some of my posts about government, but I tend not to get many replies to my political statements.

vphasitha01, nice list of users who get 100+ merits from the moment merit system is introduced to the forum. Most of them are active members and excellent quality posters and they deserve every merit. But I just check few of them randomly and find at least one which is on this list just because of some "strange" merit tips : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4509006.msg42297691#msg42297691

OP has an interesting idea, to follow only content from high merited members, but the fact that the user have 10, 50 or even 100 merits, does not always mean that this forum member has quality posts.

Is there a way to search for hero or higher members with at least 10 merit and make that a list to follow?

I wrote a script that might help you. See Bash script to filter new topics created by high rank members only (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4798318)

As fairly noted by shield132, it's a double edged sword because it's not a good thing if high rank members only read topics created by other high rank members. But at least it helps newbies (like me) to catch up all the necessary knowledge. With my little script and Piggy's impressive tool, you can probably achieve what you want.

By the way, I also just noticed there are a built-in Merit Stats (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats) within the profile section Bitcointalk! For example, Top-merited recent topics (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=toptopics) is very helpful (you need to be logged in to see this link)

Since everyone is promoting their merit statistic sites, BPIP is looking for a statistic partner.
I think you should choose a partner from these three musketeers :D

  • DdmrDdmr (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1582324)
  • LoyceV (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=459836)
  • Piggy (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=188198)

My choice is DdmrDdmr and what is yours sir Vod?

OP has an interesting idea, to follow only content from high merited members, but the fact that the user have 10, 50 or even 100 merits, does not always mean that this forum member has quality posts.
I also agreed with that the fact what you're highlighting. That's why I always believed there should be another Elite rank to scrape true Legendaries by all means. There are few of them wasting their airdropped Merits for ANN threads and involved in Merit trades while most of them contributing for the forum and guiding Juniors, even though knowing they ranked the topped and there's nothing to achieve but the utter satisfaction. That's how I think and I might be wrong, but that's the way I think about those true Legendaries.

Quote
Most of them are active members and excellent quality posters and they deserve every merit.
The truth is already within your post.

BTW I just give the stats half of the stats (next half is hero  members) what was looking for, but not agreeing with what OP suggesting.

Some good users are Quickseller, Vod, actmyname, jackg, nullius (with expert-like postings) and theymos of course.
Quickseller hasn't earned a huge amount of merit, and most of what he says is completely hypocritical anyway.  I take everything he says with an enormous grain of NaCl.

Nullius made some excellent posts, but he's currently not active on the forum.

Theymos got a bunch of ass-kissing merits, and I suspect that's exactly why he's gotten so many merits.

I agree that Vod, actmyname, and jackg consistently make excellent posts, as do most of the members with tons of merit

<snip>
Anyone can be a Copper Member if they pay the fee.  There really isn't anything special about that title.

Instead of trying to read posts of highly-merited members, I would suggest using the ignore button more often, and be selective about which sections you're reading and posting in.  If you're trying to read good posts in Altcoin Discussion, good luck with that.  You won't find anything good there, nor will highly-merited members be posting there.  Most of the good posts get made in the technical sections and in Meta/Reputation.  Sad, but true.

---Good post--

It is good data collection but I do think it is practical. Like following anybody will lead to that user favorite sections and it might not be my favorite section.

I know we have spam problem but after using this site for 2+ month you easily understand what can be filtered out and it is same with all site that you do not read the topics that do not interest you.

As Vod already introduced the BPIP project here, wonder why he didn't post the link to the top 1000 merited users :

There are a few merit abusers in that list but they are less than 1 percent /based on my observation/ and are already tagged.

Very interesting Data, I saw only 326 user has gained 100 or more than 100 merit. Out of them so many are old users. It look like that progression to higher ranks is not impossible but almost stilled.

Which makes sense the longer you have been a part of this forum, and crypto in general the more knowledge you will take in even through simple repetitive readings. Obviously not all old accounts are original owners, or people that cared to learn more.

I wouldn't say ranking up has stilled, it just has more meaning now then simply putting in time. It has slowed to a pace that makes sense and gives the rankings meaning, they are now actually like something you earn.
