Title: Running wallet secure
Post by: lpxcc on September 04, 2018, 03:14:51 AM
Hello together,

I'm searching for a solution how I can run my wallets secure, I mean today I can't trust every wallet release which is stored at GitHub, because there can be always some suspect code in wallet and I dont want loose my coins.

It there any solution to start new wallets on my OS safe? I tried to use sandbox, but I couldn't start 2 wallets.

How do you keep your system / coins safe?

Thank you,
lpxcc

I haven't used sandbox but have you bought a hardware wallet already? if you still don't have then that's the best thing that you can do so far. Yes, all wallets has some weakness but with hardware wallets at least you are safe because their companies are registered and has a reputation to protect. Mine's nano s from ledger wallet and its very recommendable.

Try using your hardware wallet, I think it's safer than the others. You just have to buy if you use a hardware wallet, the price of the hardware wallet starts from 25 $ to 150 $. You can use Trezor or Ledger Nano S.

If you don't trust any opensource. At least safest option for you is to get official bitcoin client software, install it on offline computer and generate private keys and make paper wallets. This is the most secure you can do, although then you won't be able to spend them right. If you don't have a computer to spare I can recommend you to try some LINUX OS run it offline via USB or yet CD on your main computer install client generate paper wallets and print them. After you are done simply shut down computer and all will be wiped out of your RAM, pretty secure.

If you have the drive space, just setup a separate VM for each wallet.
If you don't have the space you can do a VM for every 'X' wallets. So if one is a coin stealing trojan it will not get all of what you have.

Oracle VirtualBox:
https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html (https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html)

There are other ways of doing it, but this one works for me. As always YMMV.

Does this wallet work for ERC20. The problem for ERC20 is rather difficult to find a software wallet.

No need to be worry. In open source, decentralized sytems, all are secured very highly. Bitcoin is existing till 2009 still not been haced yet!. After all of that, if you feel insecured, i suggest you to use Jaxx wallet that has a great fame among crypto lovers.

Feel free and safe about your wallet. Most of the newcommers and traders feel insecured about their wallet and balanced. But i am suggesting , dont be worried about it. This is absolutely secured. No fear of hack, till date, no news about hack. Just be carefull and make it safe from scammers.

Can WE trust a Metamask? I'm pretty sure WE are. Register a new wallet, and use the private key to it only once - to import into Metamask. To monitor the balance, use etherscan or bot in the telegram. Use a separate browser for Metamask, do not update it (browser and Metamask).

You can make both online and offline wallet for extra security. In case of online wallet you have to update them regularly, use encryption and two factor authentication. Offline wallet can help you from being hacked on online.

Metamask can be one of the options for security of wallet and yet currently metamask cannot be a good measure as a security system, it would be better if you use Trezor

Security is an important aspect at the present time. Yesterday I watched a bad transaction in my wallet, a coin was withdrawn from it,which there never was, after this case I think about a more strict protection for my coins, no one can be trusted, data is hacked and stolen tokens every day, some people think how to protect their money, and other people think how to steal someone else's funds. I hope that somebody will finally come up with a reliable method of protection. Now there is absolutely no safe way to protect your funds.

Securing wallet is very important. You can encrypt your online wallet. Try not to forget about two factor authentication. Update your systems regularly and try to avoid mobile wallet.

It make no sense trying to run a wallet, if you won't put safety first, at times it is not that some of these wallets are not secured but the carelessness of some users is what affect them and resulted in their wallet being hacked but some people do know these

you need to change your strategy. most coins are not worth keeping and you should dump them anyways. or hold them on exchanges to be able to sell as fast as possible. only hold a coin that you think is really good and not hyped. for that you can use popular wallet that are tested. there are wallets that support multiple cryptocurrencies which are gaining popularity. there is also always hardware wallets that support multiple coins such as Trezor.

as for Sandbox, it is not just one application, it is a concept. for example one of the popular applications to use is what was introduced above: VirtualBox. you can use one of the smaller linux distributions for installation so that it takes up smaller space on your HDD so that you can run multiple instances requiring smaller space.

Suggesting someone to hold their coins in an exchange wallet is the worst thing to do. Exchanges are not safe! No matter how popular the exchange is, it is never safe to store your coins for long term in an exchange. The exchange might get hacked (might be an internal job  ::)) and you may lose all your coins. The exchange might go down for a while, and you might lose access to your coins when you need it the most.

Importance of cryptocurrencies are increasing day bay day. So the importance to secure wallet that store crypto currency is much more important too. I will suggest you to encrypt your wallet and make back up of it.

You can always try the cold wallets (offline wallets) and paper wallets as they are a good way to keep your coins secured from the internet. But using hardware wallets are highly recommended. Hardware wallets with physical keys will provide you with an extra layer of security and keep your coins protected too.

Your hard drives, laptops, and phones are the brand new bank vaults. Real-world experience and understanding of how to protect money from thieves are not sufficient for the virtual money. Try to keep your personbal data to you as much possible.

You have to be a little more paranoid while browsing the Internet, clicking on unknown links and email attachments can bring you to a hacker.

You can create backups. A backup of your cryptocurrency wallet may save you from hardware failures and a lot of human slipups. It will also let you restore your wallet in case your PC or telephone gets stolen.

Hi guys,

thank you very much for your feedback. To keep my wallets/coins secure i'm...

  • storing my private keys on paper held on 2 different locations
  • keeping coins (if possible) on my TREZOR / TREZOR-T hardware wallet
  • backuping daily my wallet.dat files
  • using strong passwords for my wallets

The Idea to test new wallets on separate virtual machine is good!

I have never used SandBox Wallet because I saved my money on the Local Exchange.
Then I will also advise you to save your cryptocurrency in hardware wallet like Nano Ledger, Trezor and KeepKey.

Just make sure that you have some kind of back up for your wallets, that way when you are holding the coins you know that if anything happens to your computer then you can always get them back. That is what I do, having a back up of the wallets is what saves you when the unexpected happens to the wallet. Better than trusting a hardware that can fail anytime

If it is ERC20 tokens then metamask would be better at keeping the tokens. This is the only digital wallet I have been trusting the whole time compared to MEW. I know that MEW is a trusted digital wallet too for ERC20 tokens but I preferred more metamask. So, i suggest to use metamask for this.

You don't have to use hardware wallet. You can use paper wallet if you want. So, you don't have to think safety with paper wallet.

No doubt paper wallets are also very secure but the back draw of using paper wallet is that when you want to spend your coins then you have to import your private keys in any supported wallet, as the OP doesn't have trust in any random wallet so paper wallet with a combination of any random wallet won't be the best way for him to secure his assets. He needs some isolated environment to store his cryptocurrencies, in that case, hardware wallet could be the best choice.

Try getting a hardware wallet then but there are most common wallets used by almost all and is considered 90% secure. so make some deeper research on this

I don't recommend store your assets on exchange except you want to daily trading, hardware wallet don't support all the coins, so you must install wallet in computer to store your coins, be careful not all the wallet is safe, so you can use VMware workstation install wallet to secure your main computer security, remember backup your wallet.dat and encrypted password

Built in wallet in a browser with add on extension? I dont think that will be "Secure" enough until someone finds out how to steal information from that extension. Hardware wallet is the only secure option out there because you will always be required to verify the transaction manually through the hardware

a lot of hardware is sold to secure your transactions and secure your wallet for example trezor and ledger, and many others, but that is quite expensive if only for Bounty Hunter

The safest wallet is only the offline wallet.
Anything that is on the internet is not safe enough, or if you have much balance in your wallet, you can seperate it to many wallets to prevent hacks

If you believe that everything you have mentioned are not safe enough then there are still more other options that you can go for, you can make use of a paper wallet in storing some of your coins and can also make use of Trezor, then have some stored on Blockchain mobile wallet with two factor authentication activated, then the remaining can go for whatever or wherever you choose next.

This is so true, there are lots of wallet claims to have great security feature but end up snatching the fund we store. Just like  trust wallet, recently it  was found out to be using a security audit by a fake company and they market themselves as open source while in reality they have just pieces of old code on github and the android version is fully closed source (they even deleted their btalk thread when it was brought up). Its disappointing how we can't trust any Waller this day. Personally, I really checking out what best wallet is available. I'm now eyeing the HODLER wallet since it is the only available open source multiwallet in the market. It also offers great features that most wallet does not offer. You can also check out their project here and see for yourself: https://hodler.tech

MyEtherWallet (MEW) is still a very good wallet and is very much recommended, you can even prove that since you have made use of it. You should even be careful with the local wallet you’re using and still have some coins stored in MEW in case anything happens. Apart from MEW other good wallets includes Electrum, Jaxx and TLDR.

I don't know about the sandbox, but whatever wallet you use, you will have a fear to lose your coins. But If you buy a hardware wallet then you will forget fearing about losing funds. I recommend you to buy a Ledger or Keepkey hardware wallet, a hardware wallet can help to store any kinds of cryptocurrency, you will not need the various wallet for various coins and you will be safe too.
