Title: NVIDIA GTX 560 (1GB) vs ATI 6950 (1GB) - which is best for mining?
Post by: pengoau on October 28, 2011, 12:17:38 AM
G'day

I'm looking at a gpu upgrade for games and also bitcoin mining amongst other things, the 6950 is the better of the two when it comes to games performance I've found but is about $30-$50 more expensive to what I can get a GTX 560 for around here. The drop in performance on the Nvidia is not that bad (about 5-10fps) and in some instances bests the 6950, and you have a saving of $50 there abouts?

refer: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/330?vs=293

Anyway how does the 560 rack up with bitcoin mining performance compared to the 6950?  I take it the ati is still better based off the games benchmarks but won't be anything massive?

ATI is always better for mining. See here (when the sites comes back): https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

EDIT: here is (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:9FiOofDGPJAJ:https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison+Mining_hardware_comparison&cd=1&hl=pt-PT&ct=clnk&gl=pt) the cached version. 6950 will give you ~360.62 Mhash/s and the 560 will give you ~75 Mhash/s

You can look it up in the chart here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
It won't load for me at the moment. But in all honesty comparing ATI cards to NVIDIA cards in terms of bitcoin performance is like comparing a GPU to a CPU.

They are designed in different ways with different priorities. (I wish I could be more specific or post a link to information, There was a TWiCH that explained it well)

Yeah, architecture makes a big difference with mining.

woah whats the reason for the massive difference?!

It's the # of Stream Proccessor Cores, And the fact that AMD doesnt WASTE their time on a Stupid Shader clock.

It's all about Raw GPUcore speed

Lol also, A $130 Radeon5830 gets 300mh/sec when overclocked, and roughly 275mh/sec when it's not
