A few years ago, bitcoin was a niche tech toy for nerds. Today, bitcoin has grown to become a household name.

The vast majority of people in the developed world have heard of bitcoin. That idea was reinforced this past week with the release of a survey from YouGov.

That survey indicated that 79% of Americans have heard of bitcoin. Additionally, nearly half of millennials wish to invest in bitcoin.

The online survey collected information from 2 million respondents across the United States. You can view the full study here. YouGov is an international online-based market research company headquartered in London.

Some of the most interesting facts gathered from the survey include:

- 79% of Americans are familiar with at least one kind of cryptocurrency

- 71% of Americans have heard of bitcoin

-The next-leading cryptocurrency is Ether/Ethereum, with 13% of Americans claiming they’ve heard of it

- Men are significantly more likely than women to report hearing about a cryptocurrency: 27% of women claim
 they have not heard of any cryptocurrency, while 16% of men chose the same answer

- Litecoin was the third most recognizable cryptocurrency, with 18% of men reportedly knowing about Litecoin and 5% of women

- Despite the widespread acknowledgement of bitcoin, few respondents were directly involved with the world’s largest cryptocurrency; of those who had heard of bitcoin, 87% have had no interaction with it, which means they haven’t bought, sold, or mined bitcoin

- Approximately half (49%) of respondents said they were “Glad I didn’t buy bitcoin earlier, and I don’t plan to buy it”; 15%, meanwhile, wished they “had bought bitcoin earlier, but I feel like it’s too late now”
Relatively few people have any immediate plans to buy bitcoin, according to the survey, despite the fact that over one third (36%) of respondents believe cryptocurrency will become widely accepted

- Cryptocurrencies continue to have a stigma associated with illegal transactions, with 25% of respondents claiming that they believe most cryptocurrency transactions are for illegal purposes; an additional 19% said cryptocurrencies were used equally for legal and illegal purposes, with 17% reporting that cryptocurrencies were used more for legal than illegal purposes

- Among millennials, approximately half are interested in cryptocurrency: 48% reported being interested in cryptocurrency, with 50% claiming they were not interested

- A narrow majority of respondents (57%) said they would not be interested in converting into crypto away from the US Dollar, with one third (36%) claiming they would be interested in converting the majority of their funds to cryptocurrency

Overall, this study provides one of the best views of public opinion towards cryptocurrency. With 2 million respondents, the YouGov survey was bigger than most other crypto surveys to date. You can take the survey results in an optimistic or pessimistic way. Optimists will point to the fact that 36% of respondents would be interested in switching their funds to crypto, for example, while pessimists will mention that 50% of respondents had no interest in cryptocurrency.

It’s also important to note that YouGov is an online data analytics company. That means the results are inevitably skewed towards representing people who are already on the internet. 79% of respondents reported knowing about bitcoin, for example, but those respondents are all connected to the internet. If we were to take a more representative study of America as a whole, it seems unlikely that 4 in 5 would have heard of bitcoin.

While the crypto landscape changes, we’re still a long ways away from widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies as a unit of account. This survey, however, shows that the public is interested in crypto – or at least aware of it.

The survey gives us very positive results. This proves that Bitcoin in particular and virtual currency are generally popular with a country like the United States. This ratio is quite true for other normal countries, except those that are too backward. This survey shows that people are skeptical about Bitcoin's ability to be successful and stable, as they still believe that Bitcoin will be unlucky, and they still believe in using the flat.

More and more people hear about it and start investing or start consuming it for daily needs the better market it will become and we will grow as a community more stronger and demand will also rise. Which will lead to rise in price so a good investment options as well.

People probably thought the same when bitcoin went from $700+- to $2000+- at around Q3 last year. And people will have the same opinions when we get back to the $20,000 range. Ohwell.

certainly great if most Americans have heard and know about bitcoin. because with many of its citizens who know, the more people there, the investment and development of bitcoin will also run well in America and in this world

True, but to be fair a higher percentage of Americans have heard of banking but a small fraction of those truly understand what it is

I think more people understand banking or the basics of banking than they do Bitcoin. There's obviously intricacies in both but with Bitcoin many people really have no clue what it actually is.

If you exclude senior citizens and children then 80% is a huge number. It's basically all the adults from 18-60.

General awareness of bitcoin/cryptocurrency is growing even in developing countries, Africa as a whole will be a hub for cryptocurrency in the near future

It will take time before even those who are involved in it to really understand how it works, bitcoins is taking a little step away from the geek/technical stuffs to the general public.

Bitcoin is becoming more popular day by day but according to the survey there is still many people who are not interested in crypto right now. I hope cryptocurrency will be positively accepted by people of USA in near future.

This is a good news that most of the Americans have heard of Bitcoin. But the survey shows us that still many people have negative thought about cryptocurrency and they have reasons to be.

It sounds like a good news but at the second glance it sounds too exaggerated. I mean to some estimations about 2 millions people in the whole world have heard or using Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, which is not a large number, so 80% is realy huge percantage even for America.
It's true that interest for Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies is rising, still it needs to be carefuly checked how realy relevant is this survey.

I think the first step of spreading and establishing a new concept into the majority of the popuation is simply to let people know about the concept and that is greatly achieved with the bitcoin tradition.

After the recent situation in Venezuela with the launch of its own cryptocurency I think people are getting more interested about this new promising technology contributing to the ever growing popularity.

Yes, I also think that 80% is too exaggerated. That's where some 25% I think a more realistic number. Of course, I could be wrong and that's all need to check, but I'll stick with the idea that 80% is unreal.

yes i guess we can say about 70% on the whole world have heard of Bitcoin but only 2-5 % owns Bitcoins or even have a Wallet.....

It's great that so many people have claimed to have heard of bitcoin or at least cryptocurrency. It would be interested to give a survey to countries a little less developed to see if the idea has been floating around at all there. It's interesting how many of the younger generation claimed that they would be willing to switch their USD currency into crypto. Also, it would be interesting to give a survey that asks people if they are familiar with how exactly the system works.

There was a significant growth in the attention towards Crypto industry in last few years. However, to be specific, the year 2017 was the year when Bitcoin and blockchain technology went mainstream. Thus, it has the potential for exponential growth in the coming years. We will be able to see Bitcoin accepted here boards hanging in most of the corners around the world in next 5 to 10 years from now.

This survey actually shows us a mixed reaction of people towards cryptocurrency. Positivity and negativity of Bitcoin totally depend on the people who are using it. I hope soon people realize the power of this technology and take it positively.

I'm really not surprise of this number because now BTC is really well known and discuss by most of the part of the population. even if you don't know really what it is you already heard about this.

Specially with the last important advertisments and publications on BTC like buying luury car or during football or soccer game diffused nationnaly or worldwild.

It’s a good news and thanks for providing the survey reports to us. But it is still unacceptable that, many of these people really don’t know what the bitcoin really is. When they will truly know what is bitcoin, they will jump to buy bitcoin.

This is a nice fact but unfortunately it does not reflect in the market and price. We have seen a big crash and bear market now for the last nine or so months so I do not see any new investors coming in. We only see day trading speculators and get rich lambo kids in the room, who just pump and dump and move form coin to coin, just to cream Bitcoin or dollars. I do not yet see movement form the masses into this Industry and as we are now, I do not see it happening very soon.

Here the question is already worth raising: who has not heard about bitcoin? These 20% who have not heard most likely live in the deep wilderness and they are not interested in the news. My grandmother in Ukraine knows about "Beethoven" So there is nothing surprising in the growth of popularity of cryptocurrency. Since last year it was well covered in the media.

The remaining 20% are probably the elderly or people in rural areas without an internet connection. I do think there is still a relatively high amount of areas in the US where you cannot get a fast, reliable broadband internet connection. What I am more interested about is finding out how many people in other countries have heard about Bitcoin. I wonder if it was as popular in other countries like it was here in America.

I'm not surprise with the number considering they have a lot of ATM that's wide spread all over their continent, 2231 machines to be exact. So with this number, its people can see it every day and so it isn't new to them. Well some might get curious and that will lead them to dig more and end up investing.

Mass adaptation of the idea of cryptocurrency doesn't need hearers what it needs is supporters, investors and believers. The survey results look quite realistic and accurate. I'm glad how much positive this survey is. This only depicts how much far Bitcoin and cryptocurrency has come. Bitcoin started the world of cryptocurrency and is still maintaining its position of being the most trusted cryptocurrency in the whole world , making a huge number of people financially independent , I'm glad that bitcoin is getting its worth and it's spreading around the whole world rapidly.

Yeah, I agree with you totally. The United States is the place of most of the scientists and have better technology sector. So, whenever any new technology comes into the market, it released in the USA. Because of that most of the people come to know about that.

Even with those good findings, we are still miles away from bitcoin gaining it's intended purpose for mass adoption. We have not even reached the middle yet. Last year, bitcoin and cryptocurrency was really heard and peaked. This year, research and development of blockchain all over. I wish the survey would have checked what percentage of Americans have actually used Bitcoin, I guess the number of would be massively low, probably less than 1%. That's the statistic that really matters, who cares how many people have heard about something, everybody has heard of cocaine but very few people use it.

Only about 5% makes bitcoin a job, the rest only knows. It takes a long time to make bitcoin a profession, because its future is unclear and controversial.

I agree. Just having heard of it does not hold much significance. I mean we hear new things almost everyday but not everything sticks. People must learn, understand and embrace crypto, in my opinion.

The statistics is not acceptable, I'm from the united states and at-least 60% people do not know about block-chain technology and mostly they are not interested in knowing about it. Even college students are not showing much interest, we have to create awareness during the next bull-run :)

coupled with the efforts of bitcoin ETF, will increasingly attract the interest of the public to invest in crypto, not just interested. but how about that the public interest in crypto is large, but crypto is still only used as an investment asset, and cannot be used as a legal payment instrument.

In a certain way it's good that bitcoin is very well known but let's stop a moment and think why it's known now: probably because of the crazy rally of the end of the last year, so what do people think about bitcoin? For many of them it's something that went up to $20k and now it's worth $6k, so it's famous but for the wrong reasons imho.

My response is that the more people hear the more people want to invest, this will make the market better and even increase market prices and demand increases

I think the cause is the increase in BTC prices to 19k last year which caused the cryptocurrency to be very well known. And also bitcoin users in the US are the most in the world, I myself am very aware that in US, Bitcoin is very famous and it's natural that many percentages of people who know bitcoin on US are very high

But in order for more people to use Bitcoin, Bitcoin needs to optimize a lot of things, the transaction speed needs to be accelerated, and the handling fee needs to be lower.

It's great that so many people in America have heard about cryptocurrency. In my country, things are quite different, most people do not even imagine the existence of cryptocurrency. But I hope that over time this trend will improve and people will get more information about modern technologies.

It's good that more and more people are at least just familiar with the cryptocurrency and know about what it is. And there is nothing wrong with the fact that they do not invest in bitcoin yet. Over time, they do, I'm sure.

I always thought that per the development of USA, the percentage of people who have heard of bitcoin or cryptocurrency in general are more than 90%. I guess I'm wrong but what it means is that a lot needs to be done to increase the statistic of cryptocurrency awareness.

Hearing about bitcoin and having knowledge about it is not the same thing. People hear stuffs, and eventually forgets about it or ends up just knowing the "word" and nothing else about it. Thus they do not have enough knowledge about what they "heard". The same thing goes for the case of bitcoin. They heard about bitcoin a lot, but does not know anything about it. Thus, no interest has been generated. Moreover, they got to know about bitcoin through the media which usually spreads negative news through exaggeration which is one of the reason why most people know about bitcoin but is afraid/ignoring its potential.

Organize the same survey in other countries,  especially in the states of the African continent, and you will get another result. less than 5-8% of people will say they have heard of the crypto.

Everybody has heard about it,sure, But that's about it. I have asked so many people if they know what bitcoin is,and they are like yessss! and when you ask them to explain what they know,they look at you with their dumb faces!

I believe that is true. There are many surveys about the bitcoin and cryprocurrency in almost every counrty regularly and the results always rising up. For the USA %80 very high number because the USA has problems with ICO's. The American people can't join most of the ICO's. Think about if is not? I believe that soon they will remove this limitation about cryptos. I think the goverments searching taxing system about it. I just wanna share this information. Here in my country whenever I asked someone whether they know bitcoin or not, they always say that they know what it is but they just don't know how to get it. Also, of this 80%, how many are making good use of this invention. Bitcoin is the present and future and is continually making new millionaires daily even while falling in price. We do not want this, we want bitcoin to be decentralized and to be completely independent from government control, if what you want is a cryptocurrency that is backed by a government then why adopt cryptocurrencies at all you already have that with fiat and we know how that system is going to end, so if the options are that bitcoin is centralized and adopted by everyone or that remains decentralized with low adoption I prefer the later.

Well.. a lot of people have heard about it. But that doesn't guarantee you anything. That could mean that the majority are opposed or hostile to Bitcoin, as the number of Bitcoin users is only a fraction of this 80% figure.

Americans may have heard of Bitcoin already but it doesn't mean they are interested to use or hold Bitcoins. Social media is very powerful and I guess the social media plays a big part in making Americans aware of Bitcoins but again there's a difference between they have heard of it and they are interested to use it or hold it.

After the media last year trumpeted to the whole world about easy earnings on a bitcoin hold, 80% of Americans are already a small figure. I thought 99% of the Earth inhabitants have already heard about Bitcoin.

This is not a surprise to hear that a large percentage of Americans have already heard about bitcoin. I was even expecting a greater percentage than this. The level of education among Americans is far greater than many places in the world. I believe there is more people in America who have knowledge on bitcoin than the 80%.

What about African counties? Doubt even 1% of the population of African countries ever used btc.

America is a developed country so it is possible for high percentage of American citizen to have awareness of Bitcoin. No matter what the Government are doing a very high percentage of them are investing in bitcoin.

On one hand it is bad since, there is no more room for explosive adoption since everyone already have heard of it. On other hand this fact maybe could mean that since they heard of it, in event of price changes, they could decide to buy cryptos.

A lot of people know about bitcoin, the reason people heard about bitcoin is becouse its price at one point of time. That time was when the price of bitcoin was high and it was going up and up and up,thats why but now the people who heard about bitcoin now dont give a fuck about it.

Take in consideration that if they want to buy, they need to do it ilegally if they don't want to pay taxes. But if they want to do the things on a good manner, they need to pay a bunch of money for taxes, and that is what makes them stay away from bitcoin.

The fact that bitcoin's popularity is growing is a good sign. This means that this technology is really needed by people and will be implemented for its intended purpose - as a currency.

I think this is an excellent indicator. The more people will know about the cryptocurrency and how to use it, the faster we will be able to start using it as an alternative to the usual national currency.

But the thing is not all that 80% are using bitcoin. And maybe thry heard the bitcoin in different manner like if they heard the bad thinfs about bitcoin so that they will not use it. There are lots of possible to happen, but I think it is still a good news that there are lots of people today that are hearing some facts about bitcoin.

The more people hear or read about bitcoin, cryptocurrency or blockchain in news resources, the more powerful our community becomes and the more well any coins on the market will feel. We remember how last year a strong HYIP around bitcoin provided him with a strong investment infusion and how everything went to the bottom when the conversations were replaced by negative news. There is a very strong correlation here.

The worrying part is that most of them have heared about Bitcoin, but even knowing it they don't feel inspired to adopt the currency. The propaganda was made, Bitcoin is well known worldwide, however it wasn't enough. Then I don't know if people are too satisfied with fiat and their currently financial life, so they don't think about using Bitcoin, or if they think it's useless or shady. The fact is that Bitcoin didn't touch them.

In fact, we can see the first Deadpool movie with a scene with conversation saying "Bitcoin", I forgot the release date of the film and if it wasn't mistaken it was before this thread was created. So it is clear that developed countries are already familiar with bitcoin for longer.

That was another indication that Bitcoin is near mainstream. I have also watched a portion of Ellen DeGeneres' show which talked about Bitcoin. And when she made mention of it, the people in the audience were clapping their hands and cheering. I think it showed the state of Bitcoin's popularity in the US despite the infamous reputation the banks and the SEC is painting it with.

As a developed country with very easy and complete information, it is not unusual if 80% of Americans hear or know about bitcoin. But hearing about bitcoin doesn't mean getting involved in bitcoin trading or investing, because they have a tendency to "wait and see" before making a decision.
