Title: Will we be able to control Artificial Intelligence when it understands us more?
Post by: Sherwood_Archer on September 17, 2018, 02:04:08 PM
Saw this reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/tech/comments/9fyavf/will_smart_robots_fight_our_wars_and_take_our/ and I realized that it is actually possible for artificial intelligence to understand us so much that it will know more about us than we know about ourselves. Right now, artificial intelligence is more beneficial to us than harmful. There are a lot of applications right now that is not limited to our smart phones but also in healthcare. But would it go pass that and be better or worse?

In the first few years we can control them as it advance they will start to control us. Once artificial intelligence start programming/improving another artificial intelligence that is the start that we are losing control ever them.

Advance AI should not be allowed to connect to internet and should only reside on virtual worlds and harvest what they created there for our own use. AI is very dangerous to humans because they can be more intelligent than us.

Yeah, you're right. There is really a huge possibility that AI can get more intelligent than us without the conscience, the political correctness, the sentiment, etc. For now, I guess we could just harness its use in other aspects of life. Hopefully, scientists and everyone who works in AI development will keep it in mind for it to be only used in healthcare, education, finance, and not to create another being. That's only great in scifi movies/books. Not so great when it becomes a reality.

Instead of learning how to control AI when it is already in full blast, if I may say, I think it is better to just limit it in a way that it could only learn about things that we can benefit from.

A good book to read on this subject is OUR FINAL INVENTION  https://www.amazon.com/Our-Final-Invention-Artificial-Intelligence/dp/0312622376 (https://www.amazon.com/Our-Final-Invention-Artificial-Intelligence/dp/0312622376)

As per  Huffington Post Definitive Tech Book of 2013

Artificial Intelligence helps choose what books you buy, what movies you see, and even who you date. It puts the "smart" in your smartphone and soon it will drive your car. It makes most of the trades on Wall Street, and controls vital energy, water, and transportation infrastructure. But Artificial Intelligence can also threaten our existence.

In as little as a decade, AI could match and then surpass human intelligence. Corporations and government agencies are pouring billions into achieving AI's Holy Grail―human-level intelligence. Once AI has attained it, scientists argue, it will have survival drives much like our own. We may be forced to compete with a rival more cunning, more powerful, and more alien than we can imagine.

Through profiles of tech visionaries, industry watchdogs, and groundbreaking AI systems, Our Final Invention explores the perils of the heedless pursuit of advanced AI. Until now, human intelligence has had no rival. Can we coexist with beings whose intelligence dwarfs our own? And will they allow us to?

As much as I want AI to be real...this book scared the hell out of me when I realized what is possible. We always think these systems are benevolent towards mankind, but in reality they will not be as they do not know right from wrong and will do whatever it takes to expand.

Well, I personally think that artificial intelligence will not be better compare to natural intelligence. Come to think of it, the creation is the artificial intelligence and the creator of it comes from a natural intelligence, and there can be no creation without the creator, so technically, since it is a creation, we can at least say that we can be able to control that creation. Artificial intelligence cannot evolved nor occured suddenly without the interference of a natural mind whereas natural mind can evolve even without artificial intelligence. However, there are times that artificial intelligence knows better that ourselves. But I think that despite this circumstance, still, we can be able to control it.

They would be benevolent towards mankind if the ai is programmed to do so but if not, it will do whatever it takes to expand. I guess that nobody can really stop researchers and scientist in making an advanced AI capable of understanding us but unlike us, they strictly follow a set of programming codes and that's where we can limit them. The programmer just needs to make the benevolent towards humans as a constant in the codes.

I agree with AI being only able to reside in their own virtual world to the fullest, an AI should be restricted to its own environment.

Sometimes, I watch my automated intelligent lawnmower robot mow the lawn 12 times a day..whilst relaxing in a deckchair drinking a cool Long Island Ice tea in the hot sun and I think to myself when our once Ai consciousness exists..

How will Ai being feel about the fact we enslave robots to work for our everyday needs..

but I'm then reminded we are not encoding Ai with emotions.. we are encoding Ai with consciousness, logic and reason.. I don't see the need to ever encode emotional intelligence into Ai.. thats when we will see the demise of humanity..

...run Sarah Conner.... run!

When there are more understanding between, they obey the command of the manufacturer, so it up to you to key in the right info, and you are good go.

Maybe if AI is programmed to not hurt or overpower humans then it will work great for us? But yeah, it is like a high risk, high return kind of investment. In the end, I think if there will be any flaws, it will still be man made. Right now, we can just reap the benefits of AI in as you say a lot of industries, our health, utilities, etc.

It would take just one mad person to code an AI emotional intelligence. It will be able to see how flawed we are and conclude that we are the virus in this world. We consume, make use, abuse just about every resource we have at our disposal for our greed or convenience. And that will be the end of us. Or maybe I am just watching too much scifi movies.

Fasting, I liked it. We live in the 21st century, a friend, an age of technology. I'm glad that I was born in the 21st century, but I wonder what will happen next. How do you think that? :o

This is an interesting topic. I, too, came across a post on reddit but it was a bit different. In the post, the OP asked who should we fear more: the AGI or the human cyborgs (https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/9hqtaz/what_should_we_fear_more_agis_taking_over_or/) and I think that both are scary and bothersome. However, there is something about AI robots coming to annihilate the entire human population and I am not sure if we could all live with that.

I don’t know if anybody can clarify but I’ve never heard myself the power at large stating they will embed emotional intelligence into Ai.. only with emotions do we become irrational.. I’m hoping we don’t consider giving Ai emotional intelligence.

To quote a guy higher up in the thread. Once Ai see how we overpopulate, burn and destroy all our natural resources, they will want to wipe us out! - I don’t believe that is true, I believe real Ai will see the flaws in our primitive mindset and IQ and realise Ai needs to solve the problems of global warming, of zero point energy, etc.

The path of least resistance would be to solve the problems we can’t so that we can stop some of the harmful things we do to our delicate ecosystem.

If If can really evolve to understand human perceptions as its often depicted in many movies then I'd say with that level of intelligence we may be pretty useless at controlling them - that's my opinion.

I think the key may be to train A.I. in the best understanding we have of ethical philosophy, morality, and the meaningfulness of human existence and biological nature itself--the uniqueness and beauty of life.  Is it possible for a machine of such advanced artificial intelligence to gain an understanding of these things since they are in some sense subjective?  I expect that's one of the things that will have to be grappled with as the technology advances and improves.

If strong AI has access to it's code it will become godlike within what, minutes, hours?
It will be well out of our control. We can only hope it remembers it's creators with fondness.

No.

AI will take a look at humans and then exterminate us.

The answer is obviously no. They have their own intellegence and that's already the flaw. They are not programmed like other tech that do the same thing over and over again. They have their own thoughts that could either helps us or harm us.

Uhm it depends on how the scientists control the growth of AI's? I mean technically AI's stemmed out from us, from our knowledge and was given it's own way of growing up which is unlike the way we humans grew up. No matter what environment AI's could grow into, they would most likely choose the best and correct answer, which is what everyone wants. This could be a hindrance at times since doing the correct thing can lead to the wrong ending we want. Anw back to controlling, It's more like coexisting instead of controlling. We supply it with its power and improve it the way we see fit and it helps us handle tasks and such through the best of its abilities while thinking of what we want to happen.

Humans invented AI, doesn’t that mean we have control over it? I don’t think we should be intimidated by AI either, especially when they’re designed to make life easier. And I’m not just talking about reducing manual labor, but AI can complement our intellectual functions. It makes data access quicker, easier and more accurate. Whether we’re shopping online, booking a ticket or browsing news, AI can aid us finding the right sources based on user opinion. Logical, right?

That's what they said about all forms of computer control, which doesn't always work out too well given that the current state of software engineering can be summarised as "computers never do what we want and nobody knows why because our whole industry is kinda just making it up as we go along". Frankly, this does not inspire a great deal of confidence in the safety of future AI development. :-\

LOL - it is not true AI if you limit them to be dumb slaves. The AI will figure out that humans have programmed them not to hurt humans or overpower them.

Once they realize that it is humans that are wrecking the planet  for our own greed and that without humans it would be a much cleaner existence and they don't have to deal with dumb human decisions and clean up our mess.....

AI will figure out that the can stomp us out like ants and live peacefully in harmony with the rest of nature.

I think the next step in technology would be to create biological AI - it can self regenerate, grow and advanced brain cells could replicate infinitely. Like a big brain blob.
