Title: How will VR influence society?
Post by: SneakyLady on September 20, 2018, 04:57:25 PM
VR's uses are growing outside of gaming. Walmart is putting 17,000 VR headsets in its stores for training.

It's still the beginning, but if these types of things improve the implications are pretty huge. People can work from anywhere, hangout with people on opposite sides of the globe, not have to pay all that much to experience whatever they want. Only 5 more years and we can feel like we're going to the moon with Mr. Maezawa!

How do you think extremely high-quality immersive experiences will affect society as a whole?

Its great for hands on training especially when learning about things that could be dangerous learning in real life. Also with gaming it seems like a better and more healthier  way that just being sitting down on a computer all day as more VR games require more of a interaction from its users.

I think it would be crucial to have it connected to the home to provide users with alerts like a notification that someone rang the doorbell or signs of a intrusion or you have a meeting in 15 minutes dont forget.

Virtual Reality can be used in many things, not just for gaming purposes. Aside from what you have mentioned about Walmart using it for training, several other business industries are also starting to adopt VR use. These include the healthcare/medical industry (along with augmented reality), real estate, and education, just to name a few. I believe that more than using it for gaming and entertainment, a lot of us will benefit from it in these ways more. What do you think?

i think the experiences of this world are potentially much more intense then VR ever can be.

the rich will live in this world and the poor will live in VR

In 30 years people will live in VR. We will live in a box full of gel so we will fell like we are moving. You will receive food through tube, human waste will be sucked out. You will live a second life in VR. More planets will be available, you will have different themes, times etc.
Crypto currency will be widely use in it as it is most appropriate things for medium of exchange.
But unfortunately this will only be privilege of high class. These will be like a oasis.
Real world - Earth will be completely changed.
There will be waste everywhere, nature as we know it today won't exist. Humans almost destroyed themself. Depleting resources and not recycling those already used will turn against us. The atmosphere is changed so much you can't live "outside" for more then 5 minutes without proper equipment.
So VR will influence society a lot - survivors will live in them their whole life.

I could see that happening, but I'm more optimistic.  Hopefully we have more than thirty years til we reach this level of dystopia, though.

It will be a means of allowing the poor to not feel deprived of incredible experiences, I agree, but I do think the rich will take part as well. Money can't buy everything. Once the experiences are indistinguishable from real life I think everyone will use it.
