Title: Idea to promote Bitcoin as a currency
Post by: mdayonliner on September 24, 2018, 03:19:53 PM
I doubt this should be on the meta board. I was thinking about Serious discussion (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=250.0) or Ivory Tower (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=251.0) (ignoring bitcoin discussions (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.0), we all know spammers will take over the topic) then I thought to try with meta hoping I will have some decent traffic. If mod decides anything else then they are welcome to move the topic or the community can advise me the suitable board, I will move it.

I am a cricket fan and I was watching Asia cup yesterday. At the prize giving ceremony I had this crazy random idea in mind to help and spread the Bitcoin. They were giving $5000 to the man of the match.

I was thinking - how about the price money in Bitcoin(?) At this kind of events, instead of dollar currency how about a company/individual comes up and award the price in Bitcoin?

Think about it for the following events:
Football World Cup
Football Leagues (English premier league, Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League etc.)
Cricket World Cup
Cricket tournaments (Asia cup, Ashes, IPL etc.)
Olympic

Forget about these big events. In you local area, how about we start with sponsoring 100$ in bitcoin for any sports event?

I don't think that this is a good idea at all. The people who are interested in the certain event will definitely question the event managers/planners on why the prize would needed to be in bitcoin instead of the typical fiat money they're used to. Forcing bitcoin to their faces is probably not a good idea. The demographic of people who would prefer to receive btc than fiat money is probably less than 5%(don't quote me; just a guess).

I don’t know how us could do that. Especially with major events, like the football world cup, but it would be a good idea to start with small events. However, who would finance that to promote bitcoin?

I think it is a good thought to get people involved in that way. The logistics would be convincing a crypto based company to view it as suitable advertising and for the sport to view the crypto company as a suitable sponsor.

It might be OK if an exchange, cloud mining company or mining equipment reseller does it.  But some clubs might object if it is a online casino.

Also the link between sports and crypto is not that strong for companies that have the funds to sponsor.

I know some coins and exchanges already sponsor motor sports.

Some blockchain is getting into the sports.

Gibraltar United seems to be going to pay it’s players in crypto, although probably QTC (Quantocoin) and not BTC, since the club owner has also invested in the ICO a fair share and has created ties to the team through sponsoring. Also at the beginning of 2018, a Turkish football club called Harunustaspor allegedly paid part of the transfer of a player in BTC … alas the part was down to a measly 0.0524 BTC.

Cases such as these are still very rare, and are more of a publicity stunt than anything else really. I guess that having a big sports name (player/team) operate at least a large portion on BTC would enhance notoriety and perhaps popularity, but until that happens perhaps smaller game players can hit some headlines with smaller operations.
