Title: Nano Ledger S Ledger Live?
Post by: jerry0 on September 26, 2018, 05:30:01 AM
I haven't used my nano ledger s in a while but when i connected it recently, it asked me to install or upgrade to ledger live.  Is this a requirement?  And is this pretty simple and straightforward to do?  I'm always hesistant of installing any updates for anything.

Sometime in the near future Chrome Apps are being discontinued, the platform that the old ledger apps were based off of. They developed a new native desktop application called ledger live. IMO it's much cleaner, reliable and easier to use. The chrome apps will continue to work as long as they exist, but they won't exist forever. Ledger live is also a new program you'll have to download and install, not a chrome app.

I found it very straightforward - just a download, install, and a couple of setup screens. Took less than 5 minutes. I would recommend upgrading - it's a much nicer interface and has security advantages over having to use Chrome.

You can download Ledger Liver from here: https://www.ledger.com/pages/ledger-live

And you will find a "Getting started" guide here: https://support.ledgerwallet.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006395553-Download-and-install-Ledger-Live

Chrome app will be discontinued, so you will lose support.
It's better to upgrade now to ledger live and get used to it.

Chrome app also have bad privacy. Ledger native app is already better now, as it is one application for all your coins.

I would recommend upgrading - it's a much nicer interface and has security advantages over having to use Chrome.

When you say security advantages, on what you think? Using Ledger with Chrome App or Ledger Live does not affect security of your private keys, they should be safe inside hardware wallet - and every transaction need to be confirmed by pressing button on device. Personally I do not see how is safer to use Ledger Live then Chrome App, it is just UI.

One thing which is different refers to privacy, it seems that Ledger Live is collects less user data then Chrome, but even that can be solved by forking the code as explained in this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4674883.0).

-snip-

You are right - I meant privacy. A slip of the tongue, so to speak. I had to download and install Chrome just to use Ledger, and wiped it as soon as I was happy Ledger Live was running smoothly. Chrome is a privacy nightmare.

I'm always hesistant of installing any updates for anything.

Is the switch from the chrome applications to ledger live the only update you didn't do yet ?

I'd heavily recommend to perform EVERY firmware update proposed by ledger.
This is mandatory if you want to keep your coins secured on your hardware device.

Regarding ledger live, currently it is the way to access all of your coins which have been previously accessible through chrome apps.
It is the recommended way due to the fact that 1) chrome applications aren't going to be supported for too long anymore and 2) chrome does collect TONS of data.

The process of updating itself is pretty straight forward and is explained very well on their FAQ.

Hi there.  I like to mention that i haven't used my nano ledger in a while.  So thats why when i plugged it into laptop. i notice i got that ledger live update asking me to update it.  But were there previous updates before this?  So how often are there updates?  The thing is some people i read mention say update it otherwise you could have issues later on?

Im going to update it later soon.  So basically when i plug my ledger into my laptop and open it from chrome as i always do, just click on update.  But when i do this, are there any more questions they ask during the update process?  I want to know this before i do anything such as if they ask me something and not sure what the answer is.  Example like when i first set it up, it ask me if what kind of bitcoin wallet i wanted such as segwit or the other option and i dont want to be confused what to do during the installation process.  Also how long is the entire process?  Are there cases where it updates then freezes etc?  Saw someone mention it did for them here...

There is no new update for your Ledger Nano S ( firmware ), only thing you can do is to install Ledger Live desktop application and use it to access your coins. This option is not same as updating firmware and you should not be concerned about it.

I am confused that you say Ledger Live ask you to update, so you have it on your PC or not? For install this app you do not need to use Google Chrome app for Ledger, you should visit this link https://www.ledger.com/pages/ledger-live and download this app if you want.

hi there.  i mean last time when i plugged my nano ledger into my laptop, there was option to install ledgerlive and because i never seen that, i just clicked don'd update.

so when i do update it, the link i got when clicked my nano ledger s into it is the one to update it right?  well i thought it was updating firmware so i didn't.  okay i will update it to ledgerlive.  so when i do this, is it same thing to log into wallet?  example i keep bitcoin in it so when i log in, i enter my code, then it ask bitcoin or bitcoin cash and segwit or the other thing etc.  Does it ask you same questions or its different?

okay so i connected my ledger to my computer.  But when i do this, i don't get the message of updating to ledgerlive.  So could i use it as is now or do i have to go directly to the website to download ledgerlive?

also does that mean if you use ledgerlive, its much easier to use?  Example i know if you have other coins besides bitcoin, you need to sign out of the btc wallet and go to another wallet in the chrome app etc.  So ledgerlive is different?

If nothing shows up, just go to Ledger’s website and download it manually.

Yes. For some coins (the ones with full support) you can view all your balances in one screen and send and receive without having to open a different app.

For the coins without full support, you can only install them from the Ledger Live but need a third party wallet to manage them (e.g NEON wallet to manage your NEO).

Just make sure you are on the latest version. After setting up your wallet, you don’t need to have it connected to update the Ledger Live app or view the balances of the supported coins.

www.ledger.com

or

Both are legit.

www.ledger.com is the official site. www.ledgerwallet.com redirects to www.ledger.com.

Hi there.  When you say make sure you are on the latest version, u mean my firmware on the ledger nano s?  I did a firmware update month ago though.  So if you connect nano ledger s and it doesn't ask you for firmware update, you are fine?

You don't need to have it connected to update the ledger live app or view the balances of the supported coins.  Im confused what you mean by this.  You mean it shows your cryptocurrency balances when your nano ledger is not connected to your laptop?  That doesn't make any sense unless im interpreting it wrong?

You're not really "updating" Ledger Live... you are installing it. It is a completely separate app to the old Chrome web browser extension. Ledger Live is a native desktop app available for Windows/OSX/Linux.

Yes.

Not to download it... it is just an app like any other app for your computer.

For the initial setup, you need to have the Nano S available so it can read your "xpub" and find all your addresses and balances. After that, you can actually open the app and view your portfolio without having the Nano S connected (essentially it acts as a "watching-only" wallet, protected by a password)... If you want to do any "secure" activity, ie. send transactions etc, you need to have the Nano S connected to be able to sign transactions etc.

Hey hcp, thanks for the response.

Okay makes sense with what you mentioned that it reads your thing and find all addresses and balances.  But here, you basically put a password that you remember like similar to like electrum right?  Thus if you don't, anyone who has access to your laptop could basically turn that program on and see how much cryptocurrency you have?  But you always have to remember this password right?  What if you forget this password?
Could you install it again?  But as long as you use it with the chrome app thats still fine?  Unless of course they stop the chrome app?

I give you direct link to download Ledger Live, and you ask what is official site? You do not need to type it anywhere, just click on the link and stop to complicate things which should be pretty simple.

Password for Ledger Live is as you say only for protect others to open this app and see your coins balances, but if you lost/forgot password you can just uninstall app and install again with new setup. This password will not affect in any way safety and availability of your coins.

Chrome Ledger apps, Ledger Live or Electrum BTC are just only user interface, you can use any of them to manage your coins - it is up to you which one you will choose.

The only thing you need to remember is your Ledger PIN or your backup seed (have it backed up). If you lose your password, you can just set up your wallet into Ledger Live again.

There is only a password option for privacy, so you can see your balance without having to connect the Ledger Nano S to your computer while not allowing anyone on your computer to see your wallet.

Thanks for the response.  But why would anyone not put a password for it?  Because if you don't and say someone has access to your laptop, they could see how much coins you have even though they can't access it.

I never said you shouldn't. I said that it doesn't matter if you forget your password because you can always set it up again.

Because if you don't and say someone has access to your laptop, they could see how much coins you have even though they can't access it.
Literally what I said above.

But why would anyone not put a password for it?

Because my laptop has full drive encryption and is never unencrypted unless I'm actively using it. If someone can break that encryption then they can definitely break a password to some random application.

This password is basically useless , as all transactions beed to be confirmed on ledger nano itself, using the PIN.

What you need to take care of is your pin and your seed.

That's not really a good reason.
Your files can not be accessed when your computer is shut down, yes.

But malware could theoretically access these information while your computer is running. If ledger live is then protected by a password, no information can be extracted.
Otherwise you'd leak some information there.

Even though i believe that people using full drive encryption know how to protect against malware, this shouldn't be unmentioned.
For a standard user a password definitely is recommended.

True. But if someone has managed to get malware on to my machine then them knowing the balance of my crypto accounts is probably the least of my worries. :P

Doesn't mean you shouldn't worry about your Ledger wallet information leaking.

I don't think there is any downside on setting up a password other than being lazy to write it every time you open the Ledger Live.

More protection = the better.

https://www.ledger.com

You can download ledger live there and find many guides.

Their official reddit is also very useful
