Title: Theymos should reconsider amount for "Donator" and "VIP" status.
Post by: The Cryptovator on September 26, 2018, 06:33:38 PM
Theymos start a post get Donator status by donating 10 BTC (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=38071.0) on August 19, 2011. Post last edited on October 3, 2011 (https://imgur.com/qGNbJ4r) and thread is still alive.

I am not sure, perhaps theymos no need donation for forum;
theymos multiple times said that currently forum don't need donations. They get enough revenue by selling ad slots.

However, there is still  opportunity to get vip and donator status. I believe few peoples encourage to get such as status although any one can donate any amount to show appreciation.

I think theymos should reconsider amount for donation accordingly bitcoin price. On August 2011 bitcoin price was 10-12$ (https://www.coindesk.com/price/) only, That means 10BTC=100-120$.

If you donate 10 BTC (which pays for about a month of hosting), you get donator status:

Most likely theymos calculate according to one month hosting payment. I don't know how much is current hosting cost for a month but I don't think it will be worth of 10BTC. So I think theymos could consider donator status for worth of one month hosting payment.

If you donate 50 BTC, you get VIP status and the ability to create a custom title for yourself (https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html)
I think this is almost became impossible to get VIP status lately. Also theymos should reconsider about it accordingly bitcoin price.

Although theymos no need donation but I think many peoples willing to get Donator and VIP status. Especially I saw few post regarding custom title, few peoples want to get custom title. I think forum will not lose anything if reduce amount but members will get benefit by custom title(whoever willing).

In my own personal opinion I don't think theymos needs to adjust the BTC requirement for those legendary statuses as we really don't need more of those members because of a cheaper price (the more they are the less cool the statuses gets). Don't worry about the hosting not being paid as theymos also auctions off 10 banner slots once in a while in order for BCT to have a revenue going for the website, I think this is enough for them to keep the website running as from what I see they already are in Round 256 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5036496.0) for the ad spaces already, and if hosting expenses is really an issue theymos might have done it by now or he might be creating a new status for a cheaper price.

I don't think it's fair to those who gave 50 bitcoins in the past for to wear VIP , and now someone with 200$ to buy the same status. It's more for a respect and honour, for those very early adopters.

This has been discussed before, and isn't going to happen. The reasoning is something like: it's unfair to the current VIPs and Donators who donated the full amount.
Besides, this is Bitcointalk, not dollar talk.

No, theymos should not do that.  I have said time and time again that I think restricting the lower level accounts and providing a paid tier of memberships with additional features that can also be earned through merit is the way to go.

There's lots of room between Copper Membership & Donator, and there's lots of features that can be added to various tiered member levels.  Avatar, signature, PM limits, forum section access, viewing signatures, and maybe new features such as the ability to block personal messages from users with 0 merit or with negative default trust.

I don't see a need to devalue the member status of those who were supporting this forum with money out of their own pockets 7 years ago, before most people had ever heard of Bitcoin.

End of the thread. It has been discussed ad nauseam.

I think it is better if you lock it, OP.

Agree with that point. I think possible implement others membership except donator and vip.

Agree with that. You are right. But at least I think it could be half amount of began.
