Title: How to burn ETH?
Post by: Wapinter on September 29, 2018, 10:42:04 PM
I know erc20 tokens can be burnt by sending them to some address. Is it possible to do same to ETH?What address should we send them to to burn if possible? Is sending ETH to  0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000 will burn it?

Yes, no one holds the private key for that address as you can see it holds 7k ETH and $700M value of ERC20 tokens. For more explanation, look at the comment section for that address, there's someone explained it well.

you have 2 ways how to burn the token :
- sending to any address that haven't owner
- burning via contract its will be automatically sending the token to 0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000

maybe this answered your question  ;D

basically the ETH and ERC-20 tokens are the same, so if you want to burn it then you just send it to the address as you mentioned above "0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000" then the ETH you own will burn just like the ERC-20 token.

None can open that wallet and then your ethereum will be stay in there forever but just curious to know about what's your motivation to burn our ethereum?
Instead of burn and it will be much better to see ethereum goes to the POS system and this is what im thinking right now.

I'd like to note that this is not a true burn as someone could potentially happen across the private key. There are some faulty addresses that legitimately have no underlying private key on BTC blockchain although I am not sure if the equivalent exists for Ethereum.

Hmm, you could always give it away. Not sure why you'd want to burn ETH. But I quite like it when token projects do "buyback and burn" things. Always like a little good bit of deflation to help HODLERS.

You can send your Ethereum my way, I will take care of the fire and burn all your ETH tokens.  ;D

Personally, I can see that the token is being withdrawn from this address, and I think that means they can't burn them.

Is there really way to burn ETH? I think it should be possible since every of it's kind can be subjected to burning. What amazes however is that is that I have never come across this topic or suggestion.

Yes it can be burnt by sending them to above mentioned address, but the question is why will anyone want to dump its eth? Ideally you can send it to some needy or send it to someone as a gift if you do not want to keep it.

What is the benefit of doing this exactly? This will not actually burn the token and lower the cap it will just be moved to an address where nobody can access it and thus I dont know what the benefit is? Can someone explain please?

Yes, sending the ETH to an unknown address is same as burning the coin because the coin won't be able to move if it doesn't have any owner.
there are some address used to burn ETH and tokens, not only 0x000.. Anyway, burning token means you make the coin won't be able to used by peoples again.

Well, i think that is the way you burn the coin / tokens. You send the coin to the un-possessed address, so that coin will not be able to leave that address.
You can search google for the address list to burn the coin, usually there are some of them with much amount of ether and tokens.

Is it necessary to burn them? I think it will be cool if you give them to some one else and you will give them away and another person will have one more headache.

If the developers have taken care of keeping the private key from this wallet, which I think is very tempting then these tokens will go to someone's pocket. ;D

when burning coins you want an address that is not created from a private key. so you can choose any random hex address and send your ETH to it to burn but if you are asking for "proof of burn" then you have to send it to  an address that obviously wasn't created from a private key or send the coins to an output that is not spendable. in bitcoin we have op_return.
there is no such feature available in ethereum so your only option is to stick with these types of addresses. choose 0x00000... or anything else like 0x111111... and that will burn it.

Yes exactly. However, you technically wonīt burn it and I donīt know if Coinmarketcap and other similar pages will count the eth at 0x00.. as blocked and not count it in the circulating supply.

Yes. Like erc20 tokens, sending ether in an account who has no access is considered as token "burned". The "burned" simply means it won't circulate in the ethereum blockchain.

Hmm and no one asked topic starter for waht he going to burn ETH? I think its will be better to present it someone who heeds it...)

If ERC20 can be burned as you said in this thread, then what and for what purpose to burn ETH?? I ask a little, maybe you can explain a little description or purpose. Thank you very much.

Just put it on a wallet than delete the info on that wallet ? I mean it is not technically "burning" eth because in the end someone can crack that wallet (very very hard to achieve) and take it unlike bnb being burnt like binance however it is as close as you can get without actually burning the coin.

If you delete all keys and info and just get rid of it than the ETH will be unreachable and that is basically the same logic as burning it.

For example whatever money satoshi nakamoto had on bitcoin is also "burnt" in my eye because dude is not using them at all but they are technically still there for the time if he comes back and uses it.

It is very intersting question but not the useful. Your variant is right but I don't think that someone will use it because where is the logic to lose money with your own decision?
