Here's a better source for the story (https://www.coindesk.com/us-customs-official-says-crypto-conversions-leave-criminals-exposed/). It's from a few days ago. He isn't saying anything new -- just that fiat/cryptocurrency conversion is the point at which criminals are most vulnerable. I'm pretty sure we all knew that.

I'm more interested to know what they plan to do when people eventually stop converting to fiat. :P

LOL

I wonder what will be the year that the whole community will have an obsession to find the best way to turn fiat into crypto. I hope it's next year. But it may be that at some point the conversion will not be so necessary and anyone who prefers cryptocurrencies will stop using fiat for almost everything. Will receive payments and just use.

Volatility is still a major constraint. But the need to still use banks is the greatest of all.

Also the government agencies spending on blockchain analysis services like Chainalysis has been increasing. It will not be long until the FBI, CIA and the IRS will have a good map of bitcoin's blockchain.

You know where to go if you want to hide hehehe.

Is this news? Everyone knows the "trap" for criminals using Bitcoin is the conversion to Fiat. The Fiat system is very regulated and monitored at all times. <ATMs and Banks are covered 24/7 by CCTV cameras>

Even if you simply trade bitcoins for cash on the street, you expose yourself to CCTV and also to the person that you are trading with. <This person might be a under cover agent or law enforcement official>

A criminal using bitcoins for his crimes, would be stupid to convert to fiat and using bitcoins for payments is also a bad idea, because all transactions can be logged and traced on the Blockchain.  ::)

No, It isn't new but the past few months the government has been spending million dollars in development to be able to "track" people using it for criminal activities. Of course, it is not looking at the small fishes, it's interested in the big ones dealing with tons of money.
At the same time, a criminal is probably dumb if he converts to fiat. If you want to use cryptocurrencies to not be tracked then there is no use if after you convert to fiat
