I think the ONT will be one of the top gainer and ZRX will be one of the top losers tomorrow. It be more interesting if you give news about events or updates that are done by each altcoin every day, like coinmarketcal.

SHA256d explained by Coin360

https://i.imgur.com/6nFjLGG.png

I Know What Bitcoin is, But What Is SHA256d?
SHA256d (standing for double-Secure Hash Algorithm 256-bit) is just a two times applied SHA256 cryptographic hash function, which is an operation mapping any piece of information into unique 256 bits.

What Does It Do?
It maps any text, or input, into a fixed-length sequence of a 64-digit string, or output.
Each output is formed by 1 input only (more accurately, it’s true with an extremely high probability): so, each text has its own, unique string footprint. If a single symbol is changed in the text, the result of the hash function changes the output dramatically.

SHA256d is a one-way function, which means given any input it’s easy to compute an output for it. But if you have an output you practically cannot produce the input.

Ok, but How is it Connected to Bitcoin?
SHA256d is used while mining. Mining is the computational process of adding a batch of validated transactions (a so called block), to the Bitcoin’s blockchain. This operation is performed by miners.
To build a block and have it chained to other blocks, a miner has to:
-Collect transactions and turn them into a candidate block (temporary block);
-Hash the header of the most recent block with SHA256 twice and put it into the candidate block. This action allows the new block that the miner is currently working on to be added to previous blocks. So that’s why they call it a blockchain.
-Find the solution of Proof of Work Problem by inserting it into the current block’s header.

Do all coins use SHA256d?
No, actually, some coins use this algorithm besides Bitcoin, such as Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Qbao (QBT), Byteball Bytes (GBYTE) etc.

Where can I see what algorithm a coin uses?
On Coin360, you can see all the coins grouped in blocks by algorithm. Stay tuned to get more information about other hash functions.

Interesting visualization of the market, but I do not really understand what customers / who is your target group?
It's just not so clear for me, as coinmarketcap for example.., but maybe for someone who do something else, it's more useful. ..or maybe i just don't know how it should be readed?  ::)

I don't know how other people think about your website platform, but IMO, I think it's a little bit messy. It's really difficult to follow all cryptocurrency in top 100 by taking a look only. IMO, Coinmarketcap is still the best. I agree that you have a new idea but it's still not good enough.

I'm not familiar with this view. I think the Tadtrader application is getting the most users because the graphics and everything is pretty and logical. In addition, it always lets us choose the pairs of altcoins we ask for. That's my favorite thing.

Maybe your site would take more visitors in the bull period. Now people don't even want to look.

seriously, I find it even more difficult to analyze the situation in the cryptocurrency market. I did not understand the movements that took place in 2018, but today everything turns into other influences on coins. As if the market should be restored, but everything is in place. I was hoping for the prospect of ethereum after the update, but today ETHs are again being released in price.

Facebook’s cryptocurrency project is moving along (according to unnamed sources), Coinbase added XRP coin, and the Kraken crypto exchange is offering a $100,000 reward in exchange for tips concerning the whereabouts of QuadrigaCX funds.

Crypto Leverage (https://www.reddit.com/r/Coin360/comments/b0b9tj/crypto_leverage/)

https://i.redd.it/p0tg8up5fql21.jpg (https://coin360.com/blog/crypto-leverage)

The cautious start to the week is, in part, driven by the reaction to the move by MakerDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization that provides crypto collateralized loans, that voted to raise interest rates from 1.5% to 3.5%. If the peg does not stabilize at $1.00, the interest rate will be again increased to 5.5%. As a guide, the stability fee (or the interest rate) is increased to encourage borrowers to repay their loans, thereby increasing the price of Dai. On the other hand, the fee is decreased to incentivize Ethereum holders to take out loans, thereby increasing the supply of the stablecoin. However, even with the higher fee, don’t expect a rush to redeem their ETH, especially not from the accounts that used the facility to add to (leverage) their ETH position. In fact, given the reduction in block creation times from 19 seconds to roughly 14, coupled with a lower difficulty level (a direct result of EIP-1234), miners have not been significantly impacted by the reduction in block reward from 3 ETH to 2 ETH, which points to a bullish outlook for ETH and therefore an even higher use of leverage, leading to more inflow into MakerDAO.

My suggestion, nice reads but your images are too big. Maybe something a bit smaller, so pages won't take too long to load and also I don't have to keep scrolling (because as images load the page keeps scrolling so I literally must wait 2 minutes to be able to read the page properlu.

No need thumbnails, but just a smaller image that saves loading time and gives more viewing pleasure:)

in any case, if the weight of the page in kilobytes is large enough from the image, then it will still be difficult to load if your device has a small amount of RAM or the Internet speed is lower than required.

Crypto Exchange Regulations: Current Landscape (https://coin360.com/blog/crypto-exchange-regulations-current-landscape)

Marketplaces and exchanges have been around for centuries, but over the years trading has moved away from the outdoors to the indoors, to open outcry trading, and the onset of computers saw trading activity move to fully electronic systems. The rate at which crypto trading grew on the back of the then booming Initial Coin Offering (ICO) market has surpassed everyone’s expectations and, given the profitable nature of operating an exchange, resulted in a huge rush to the market by a number of cryptocurrency exchanges.

While launching a trading platform is a big technical challenge in itself, the bigger challenge is to ensure 24/7 reliability (something that traditional exchanges do not have to worry about given the trading halt on weekends) and durability as the market scales. Aside from technical challenges, there are also a number of legal issues to consider given the attraction towards the new asset class by users from across the world. To make things even more complicated, a number of crypto exchanges have funded their operations by launching their own token, a move which may backfire if regulation takes a firmer hold on the industry. For the most part, the focus has been on projects and teams that raised money through ICOs as a possible violation of securities laws. More recently, crypto exchanges have come under larger scrutiny and the SEC even took action against the decentralized token exchange, EtherDelta. What this case shows is that even though the decentralized nature of such exchanges makes it more difficult to shut down, it does mean that they can still be held liable for their actions.

Exchanges should be at the forefront of any regulatory change and should resist the temptation to circumvent regulation, but rather embrace it and challenge the rest of the industry to also do so.

Level Playing Field (https://coin360.com/blog/level-playing-field)

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) announced that it will not add a new Bitcoin (BTC) futures market in March. The crypto media was abuzz with excitement and also plenty of confusion. Now, it is worth remembering that these futures contracts are cash settled and do not require participants to actually hold BTC at any point in time.

However, the main point to note is that CME and CBOE BTC futures do not expire on the same day and this discrepancy resulted in plenty of confusion for a retail-driven market not well-versed in financial protocols.

Crypto Spring (https://coin360.com/blog/crypto-spring)

Bitcoin hash rate, the computing power securing the network, has reached levels not seen since early November 2018. With the mining difficulty remaining relatively flat for over a month now, new cryptocurrency miners have found it easier to bring their rigs online.

There have been numerous reports that Bitcoin miners in China are buying used equipment and making deals with mining farms and hydroelectric plants. This season a significant amount of excess electricity is expected to be generated by hundreds of hydropower stations, especially in China’s mountainous southwestern provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. This level of excess power would result in competitive electricity costs for Bitcoin miners.

There were huge on-chain token movements for MKR yesterday – $48M moved vs the $4.4M in total on chain volume the previous day. The move took place ahead of yesterday's Governance and Risk meeting, which was focused on 'Supply/Demand Imbalance' and took place ahead of today's stability fee vote. Ethereum came under selling pressure ahead of the event, however, DAI staged a modest recovery during the Governance and Risk meeting, which indicated that the decrease in ETH was exaggerated.

Do You Believe? (https://coin360.com/blog/do-you-believe)

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) adoption is set to accelerate moving forward, and the pain thresholds associated with higher borrowing rates may have been severely underestimated, especially given the broad-based valuation collapse of cryptocurrency assets over the course of 2018. As such, the base case scenario for being long Ethereum still stands, even in spite of the recent stability hike by MakerDAO/Dai. As a guide, a total of 58 addresses participated in the recent stability fee hike, representing 0.58% of MKR crypto holding addresses, of which 73.2% voted in favour of the highest hike, 17.9% in favour a 2% increase, and just 8.9% to maintain the status quo.

What started off as a relatively calm trading session, turned into a run and a consequent break of the $3900 level as crypto market participants pre-positioned for the upcoming expiration of CME Bitcoin futures and also reacted to the less than favorable news of a 5.11% rise in BTC’s mining difficulty. In addition, as pointed out by the team at Skew, there is a good amount of Bitcoin expiration options this week - 36,000 options. Trading activity is said to be focused on cleaning the strikes, with a decent size noted at 3500 strikes (puts).

The amount of ETH coins locked in the MakerDAO credit ecosystem has stabilized at 2.06% (vs 2.10% before the stability fee hike) and at the same time, DAI is trading better and more in line with its stablecoin peers. This renewed sense of stability is a strong indication that leverage plays will soon resume course. When FOMO? (https://coin360.com/blog/when-fomo)

Heading into the CME Bitcoin March futures expiration later today, the cryptocurrency is attempting to consolidate its position above the psychologically important $4,000 level and Ethereum has the $140 level in its sights. A break above will likely see the ETH look to retest $165 area and another break above towards $200 would likely spur retail flow back into the crypto market. It is still too premature to call, but should it materialize, this rally would be even more leverage driven than before given the number of new vendors that provide margin/leverage trading, as well as the futures and options on various crypto assets. At the same time, regulators are acutely aware of the fast-growing asset class and will be prepared to clamp down on cryptocurrency exchanges offering highly risky products to retail clients. On that note, Cointelegraph reported that Star Xu, founder of exchange services provider OKCoin and the world’s 6th largest crypto exchange OKEx, has announced OK Group’s partnership with blockchain-focused trust company Prime Trust, potentially allowing the firm to launch its own compliant stablecoin.

Last week we asked, “When FOMO?”, spurred on by a crypto market where Bitcoin was trying to consolidate its position above the key $4,000 level, while also having to deal with expiring futures and options contracts. In particular, as we pointed out, decent size was noted at 3500 strike (puts). For those that are yet to be convinced of the importance that the derivatives market has on the underlying, it is worth pointing out that last Friday was another record day for Deribit with more than $40mln BTC options traded.

The aggressive crypto rally which took place in the early hours yesterday may have lost some of its steam but the upside bias remains intact. Heading into the close of the week, Bitcoin is set to finish with gains of over 20% and above the psychologically important 5,000 USD level, while Ethereum rallied all the way to the $180 area before pulling back to mid the $160 region. Social media has been abuzz with excitement, with plenty of “to the moon” references by market commentators. Some attributed the surge to a major order by an anonymous buyer which, as reported by Reuters, set off a frenzy of computer-driven trading. The said order, worth about $100 million, was spread across U.S. based exchanges Coinbase, Kraken, and Bitstamp.

Squeeze It (https://coin360.com/blog/squeeze-it)

The bullish sentiment is showing no signs of abating, with Bitcoin trading firmly above the $5,000 mark and Ethereum on its path to reclaim the $200 level. However, those hoping to find signals of the future price action in metrics such as hashrate will be disappointed to learn that despite the rally, there has been little movement in the underlying rate. This of course, makes sense as the exchange trading aspect has little to do with the underlying mechanics of the blockchain, it is the by-product of price gains which tends to incentivize miners and other participants to enter the cryptocurrency market for physical contracts.

The bullish momentum continued for yet another day, Bitcoin traded in the high $5,300 area, while Ethereum looks set to test the psychologically important $200 level. Compared to the flurry of activity on the CME last week, the trading volume on Monday was rather light, with only 9,769 contracts exchanging hands. Still, FOMO looks to be in full force according to New York Times journalist and crypto influencer Nathaniel Popper, who Tweeted: “Update on Facebook’s cryptocurrency: Sources tell me that Facebook is now looking to get VC firms to invest in the Facebook cryptocurrency project we reported on earlier this year. Back To The Jungle (https://coin360.com/blog/back-to-the-jungle)

Regardless of whether you find yourself in the bull or bear camp of the crypto market, it is always worth reminding yourself that this is a very speculative market. Fundamental metrics do not always correlate to the underlying cryptocurrency prices and, more often than not, proposed valuation models are biased and subject to data overfitting. At the same time, the OTC market resembles a very archaic way of doing business and is full of dream chasers. Crypto maximalists may disagree but for Wall Street to roll up their sleeves and commit to crypto, they do not necessarily need to believe in the technology. If there is a secondary market for the asset class and there are inefficiencies to be exploited, then there is no reason to expect them refrain from trading cryptocurrencies, just like they trade pork bellies and the longevity market. With that being said...the crypto market remains in a bullish bias, a positive outlook echoed in the derivatives market. ETH contango is being pushed wider, which is also driving other assets higher (given the correlation and hedging strategies). However, the Bitcoin curve remains subject to regular shifts from contango to backwardation, which indicates increased interest from spread traders.

Interestingly, Ethereum Sep futures also topped out a few dollars under the key $200 level, giving it more substance as a barrier. The contango has tightened, with spot ETH vs Sep contracts at around $10 vs $15 yesterday. In short, the trend remains bullish, especially given the apparent indication of demand from China where buyers are paying premiums over the official USD/CNY rate.

Appear Weak When You Are Strong (https://coin360.com/blog/appear-weak-when-you-are-strong)

The meteoric climb of Bitcoin (BTC) all the way to $5,500 came to a crashing halt yesterday, at least that’s what social media and the “moon boys” will tell you. However, profit taking at this stage is actually a healthy development for the market that is so heavily driven by leverage and speculative flow. The underlying blockchain metrics do not necessarily indicate whether the rally should or should not have taken place; the hash rate has been on a very steady but gradual uptrend, while the total number of unique addresses used on the Bitcoin blockchain is showing little growth. In fact, one can argue that the fundamentals point to much lower valuation. However, as with anything speculative, do not underestimate the power of FOMO. Also, given the growth in the derivatives market, being aware of the flow in both the options and futures markets is becoming increasingly important in judging the short-term direction of the market.

Information Cascade (https://coin360.com/blog/information-cascade)

It is notoriously difficult to measure institutional demand, not only are there too many assumptions to take into account but even data that on paper indicates "institutional" demand is far from being clear cut. Most recently, the CME Commitment of Traders report indicted a sharp increase in demand from asset managers/institutional market participants, which is, of course, a good sign for a cryptocurrency market trying to clean up its image and appeal to professional money managers. However, CME’s latest report has indicated that the healthy appetite has been somewhat short lived.

Corporate Governance 101 (https://coin360.com/blog/corporate-governance-101)

The contentious Bitcoin Cash hard fork that took place at the back end of last year resulted in liquidity being drained out of the market, in turn causing the market to suffer significant losses. The new chain dubbed BSV, supported by Calvin Ayre, has consequently carved out a not insignificant share of the market. However, for much of its existence, it has underperformed its counterpart, BitcoinCash.

Don’t Look Back (https://coin360.com/blog/dont-look-back)

Bitcoin reclaimed the $5100 level and, after overcoming a few road bumps, the price shot up into the mid-$5200 level, and the BTC futures curve has since been shifting from backwardation to contango (albeit modestly so). At the same time, Ethereum’s price moved back into the mid $160 area and the contango spread between perpetual rate vs Sep contract has widened to around $5-6. As a reminder, last week the spread was as wide as $15, however a bout of profit taking ahead of the $200 level saw the spread collapse. The price bias remains bullish, and the spread is again expected to widen as the cryptocurrency prices move back towards the key technical level. The delisting of Bitcoin SV (BSV) has not resulted in any major outflows, which in turn should also prove supportive for the crypto price action going forward. As a reminder, Bitcoin was trading around $6,500, while Ethereum was at $200 last year before the Bitcoin Cash hard fork, these levels should serve as a good indication for upcoming price targets. Also, something to be aware of is the upcoming Bitcoin Cash network upgrade, which is scheduled to take place on May 15, 2019.

Build It And They Will Come  (https://coin360.com/blog/build-it-and-they-will-come)

The cryptocurrency market continued to trend higher, with Bitcoin edging into the 5,300 USD area before a mild regression back into the mid-$5,200 zone, while Ethereum rallied aggressively to 170 USD after stops were tripped breaking through $168. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum futures curves are now trading in contango, however, it remains to be seen whether this will be sustainable going forward. The amount of ETH locked into the MarkerDAO credit ecosystem has declined, albeit marginally, to 2.03% vs 2.08% prior to the most recent stability fee hike. The stablecoin DAI has also edged back towards its peg level and resumed trading more in line with its peers. As such, at least for the time being, further hikes are unlikely to be on the agenda. Still, as the crypto market continues to move higher, leverage will continue to remain an attractive option for maximizing returns, especially as the DeFi ecosystem continues to expand.

There’s A Party Goin’ On (https://coin360.com/blog/theres-a-party-goin-on)

Bitcoin continued to surge higher, breaking above the previous resistance level of $5,500 to trade well into the $5,600 zone. Market capitalization is set to top $100bln level for the first time since mid-November of last year when the contentious Bitcoin Cash hard fork resulted in a temporary, albeit very aggressive, liquidity crisis. The upside target for BTC remains in the $6,300-6,500 area. Ethereum has also posted strong gains and remains well on track to make another test on the key $200 level. Interestingly, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin posted on Github that ETH will use a higher staking reward metric after the deployment of Ethereum Proof of Stake (PoS). If 1 million ETH is staked, a maximum amount of 181,019 new ETH would be issued annually with a max return rate of 18.1%.

The cryptocurrency market continued to edge higher yesterday and, while profit taking at this stage should not come as a surprise, the bias higher remains intact. Resurrection (https://coin360.com/blog/resurrection)

The crypto market staged a bit of a pullback in what can be described as a healthy bout of profit taking, especially considering the recent upside traction. The “buy on dips” trend looks to be intact and the 6,500 USD price area remains the next target for Bitcoin (pre-Bitcoin Cash hard fork in November 2018). At the same time, further downward movement and a break below the $5,200 level may incentivize sellers to aim for the Bitcoin’s price of 4,800 USD.

Spring Cleaning (https://coin360.com/blog/spring-cleaning)

The cryptocurrency market suffered a huge blow yesterday when the New York State Attorney General (NYSAG) announced that it is suing Bitfinex and affiliated firm Tether (USDT). The suit alleges that Bitfinex and Tether engaged in “undisclosed, conflicted transactions to cover Bitfinex’s losses by transferring money out of tether reserve funds.” It is alleged that Bitfinex commingled client funds through Crypto Capital, in other words, the firm mixed client funds with its own capital. Furthermore, according to the attorney general’s office over $700 million was drained from Tether’s reserves. The court has reportedly ordered the operators of both companies to immediately cease the dissipation of United States dollars that back Tether tokens and to produce investigation-related information and documents.

The crypto market continues to show plenty of resilience to the recent Tether/Bitfinex news, so much so that even with Tether premium trading at over 6%, Bitcoin is yet to fall below the key $5,000 level. Still, it is worth keeping an eye on the derivatives market; that tends to be less forgiving and things can turn ugly very quickly from here. Metrics to watch - futures open interest, implied volatility, Tether premium and of course basis, and the shape of the curve.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Tether and Bitfinex, which has resulted in the Tether premium spiking to over 6%, the cryptocurrency market continues to show plenty of resilience. Specifically, the 5,000 USD price level for Bitcoin remains intact and Ethereum has also managed to settle above the $150 level. Still, given the highly leveraged and speculative nature of crypto markets, the catalyst for a sell-off might be just around the corner. Hot Money (https://coin360.com/blog/hot-money)

The market remains in a jubilant mode, with Bitcoin rallying above $8K and Ethereum advancing all the way to $215. Citing CME Group, the Chicago exchange declared its Bitcoin futures product recorded a new all-time record of 33.7K contracts sold in one day — shattering the prior records of 22.5K and 18.3K set on Apr. 4 and Feb. 19, respectively. Another market positive statistic is the growth of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust flows which reached an all-time high in April. Inflows in April (11,236 BTC) were approximately equal to those of the previous four months combined and, USD adjusted, nearly $58.2 million was added to Grayscale’s holdings in April, which is almost as high as the $60.8 million at the height of the bull market in December 2017. What is more interesting is the GBTC premium, which currently stands at nearly 40% and has increased consistently since December.

As pointed out yesterday, Ethereum underperformed significantly vs BTC in the recent run-up, so much so that Y/Y basis Bitcoin is nearly flat, while Ethereum was down around 60% in the same metric. Heading into the upcoming CME Bitcoin futures expiry day at the end of this week, the cryptocurrency market is beginning to show signs of jitters. Although the path towards the psychologically important $10k level remains intact for Bitcoin, profit taking at this stage is not an unlikely scenario. However, something that would maintain the price momentum is the ongoing roll into the next futures contract. Specifically, open interest (OI) for the month of June stands at 1,996 (up from 1,316) and July at 432 (up from 303). In total, OI is at 5,190 (up from 4,804). Lock It In (https://coin360.com/blog/lock-it-in)

The cryptocurrency market traded weaker overnight during Asian trading hours but has since pared back the vast majority of early losses. As such, in early European trade, Bitcoin is trading down just over 1%, Ethereum is flat and XRP is down 1.5%. The Bitcoin futures curve remains in contango, albeit the premium has dwindled somewhat, while the Ethereum Sep-Perp spread has also narrowed to around $4 vs being above $10 during the recent rally. In terms of decentralized finance (DeFi) and leveraged market, the amount of ETH coins locked in the credit ecosystem of MakerDAO has held steady at around 1.54%. However, as per the overview of the collateralized debt position (CDP) monitor, the lock function, which allows users to add more collateral to their CDP is above the recent daily average. How Do You Like Your Curves (https://coin360.com/blog/how-do-you-like-your-curves)

The crypto market continues to trade stubbornly around the $8k level and the June Bitcoin futures contract, which posted its first trade on Dec. 31, 2018 and subsequently traded in contango, causing a huge squeeze in the market, is due to expire at the end of this month. The total open interest on the CME is 4,423, of which 3,171 corresponds to the June contract. The contango between Sep and perpetual has tightened significantly recently and spot traders should pay particular attention to the shape of the curve in the next few weeks to gauge the near-term sentiment, especially if the price action remains sideways. Interestingly, realized funding is back in the negative across the board. Another metric worth noting is that of Bitcoin’s layer-2 scaling solution, the Lightning Network, which saw a huge growth phase earlier this year and now is experiencing a prolonged drop-in capacity. In early European trade, the network capacity is down 11%, and the number of channels is also down 9.4%.

Having traded at a huge premium, Bitcoin futures contango is seemingly being evaporated, with Sep-perpetual trading within $10 of each other. Whether the curve will invert or not remains to be seen, but anyone trading directional should not underestimate the importance of watching the futures curve as we head towards the June 28 contract expiry. Bitcoin continues to hold onto $8k and the key level to watch on the downside is 7,450, as a break below would open the door towards what could develop into a very painful crypto market correction. The Lightning Network, which experienced massive growth earlier this year continues to experience a drop in capacity. Roundtrip Rags to Riches (https://coin360.com/blog/roundtrip-rags-to-riches)

In the world that is overflowing with economic and geopolitical uncertainty, one thing remains constant and that is that crypto markets continue to defy well-established market correlation patterns. Leaving the endless trade talks and Brexit scenarios aside for the time being, the market was little affected by the reports of two oil tankers getting attacked in the Gulf of Oman. Brent crude was on course for its biggest single-session gain since January, which saw the international oil benchmark trade up almost 14% for 2019. Another development that may prove more pertinent to crypto firms, especially those that have ties to China, are the proposed amendments to the extradition laws in Hong Kong that would allow extradition requests from authorities in mainland China, Taiwan and Macau. As a guide, Hong Kong has entered into extradition agreements with 20 countries, including the UK and the US, but an agreement with China has never been reached.

Crypto Moves in Mysterious Ways

The macro theme remains very much the same, the uncertainty surrounding global economic growth is a hot topic among the world’s leading central bankers and yet the supposed flows that benefited Bitcoin are no longer present. Press reports continue to point out that China’s central bank (PBOC) could cut its benchmark policy rate for the first time in four years if the US Federal Reserve (Fed) delivers a widely expected cut in late July. The central bank has already been quietly guiding short-term borrowing rates lower for months. However, after rallying like there is no tomorrow, Bitcoin has entered into a phase that has been particularly frustrating for directional and momentum traders; its price swings have been unexpected and stretches of volatility have tended to disappear without much notice.

Watch Your Back (https://coin360.com/blog/watch-your-back)

The contango (Bitcoin futures curve) has been nothing short of a god send for miners and a curse for specs. However, just like in Dec’17, it remains to be seen how long the overstretched levels will last. The current dynamic is such that not only are miners able to capitalize on the parabolic advance in prices but they can also lock in prices for the next 3-6 months at a premium over the spot market. This premium ranged from $400-900 at the end of last week before coming down to a mere $300 over the weekend. Given that the CME futures are not traded over the weekend, that is traditionally when more sensitive price action takes place. Nonetheless, the dramatic nature of the collapse in contango delta over the weekend ought to serve as a reminder of the fragile nature of the recent rally.

The Fed cut rates for the first time since 2008, but the move, dubbed a “hawkish cut”, failed to appease the financial markets as equities slumped and the Dollar index rose to an 8-month high. Two Fed officials dissented from the decision, favoring no move on Wednesday, while the press conference further undercut market expectations going forward. Gold bugs and crypto maximalists also came out of the meeting less than impressed with the market reaction, as gold continued to head south, having touched on a 6-year high in June. As a reminder, late last week European Central Banks ditched a 20-year-old agreement to coordinate their gold sales. The so-called Central Bank Gold Agreement (CBGA) was originally signed in 1999 to limit gold sales and help stabilize the market for the precious metal. In a statement, the ECB said that the signatories confirm that gold remains an important element of global monetary reserves, as it continues to provide asset diversification benefits, and none of them currently has plans to sell significant amounts of gold. The deal, originally between 15 central banks, capped the amount signatories could sell each year. Over the subsequent years, prices surged from less than $300 to a high of almost $2,000 in 2011 ($1,400 as of now). Now, of course, in spite of suggesting that there is no desire at the moment to sell off significant amounts, who knows how long that will last? Who would blame them for wanting to capitalize on price appreciation, especially in the face of slowing economic growth and deteriorating finances? At the same time, given the market pressure on policy makers for more rate cuts and the inability to un-invert the bond curve, calls for the adoption of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) may be revived. The theory states (among other things) that a government that can create its own money, such as the United States, cannot default on debt denominated in its own currency. A government can also pay for goods, services, and financial assets without a need to collect money in the form of taxes or debt issuance in advance of such purchases, is limited in its money creation and purchases by inflation…

Reach for the Sky (https://coin360.com/blog/reach-for-the-sky)

The Bitcoin rally continues, with the largest cap asset now trading above $12k and the futures curve moving into deeper contango, as crypto market participants continue to react to the recent developments in the FX market. Notably, the Chinese Renminbi weakened beyond 7 per US dollar for the first time since the 2008 global financial crisis, breaching a level that China’s central bank (PBOC) has previously defended as the prospects of a trade deal between the US and China have continued to fade away. Unexpectedly though, the PBOC on Tuesday set daily currency fixing stronger than analysts expected and announced the planned sale of yuan-denominated bonds in Hong Kong. This comes directly after the U.S. labelled the country a currency manipulator, which helped drive the yuan up 0.2% a day after it sank to its lowest point since 2015. The central bank also rejected the accusation it manipulates the yuan. In times of distress, cash is king, and, while the focus may be on Bitcoin and other large cap assets in the crypto space, the growing importance of stablecoins will likely again be on display. Maintaining the peg can be just as challenging in times of high velocity inflows as it is during aggressive outflows, and premiums on the likes of KRW and CNH are to be expected. At the same time, Tether (USDT) may gain further ground against other stablecoins, given its preference during capital flight times.

Fall from Grace (https://coin360.com/blog/fall-from-grace)
The broader focus remains on the never-ending trade talks between the US and China, with analysts from Goldman Sachs noting over the weekend that fears of the US-China trade war leading to a recession are increasing and that the firm no longer expects a trade deal between the world’s two largest economies before the 2020 US presidential election. The widespread media coverage and the perceived implications of capital flows has prompted a number of crypto market commentators to speculate the advent of another squeeze higher in prices. However, perhaps overwhelmed by all the media noise, a majority of traders are overlooking the recent developments in the Decentralised Finance (DeFi) market. Specially, the dramatic collapse in the amount of USD locked in Maker, which has now fallen to below $300mln. The total amount of ETH locked in the credit ecosystem now stands at 1.25% while the number had been 2.11% earlier in the year.

Field of Dreams (https://coin360.com/blog/field-of-dreams)

The market took a real beating last week, with DeFi outflows accelerating and the contango delta narrowing sharply for Bitcoin and Ethereum. The amount of ETH locked in the Maker DAO credit ecosystem has stabilized around 1.3% but the pressure on ETH was such that the so-called “bite” function on the Maker ecosystem, where users liquidate vulnerable CDPs, reached a 3-month high on Friday. However, since then the market has rallied, as short positions have gotten squeezed following the big announcement that the much-awaited platform by Bakkt was finally given the green light by regulators. The long-awaited Bitcoin futures and warehouse products for institutional clients will be launched on September 23. However, some of their largest prospective clients still don’t have permission to trade physically-delivered futures contracts.

Tick Tock (https://coin360.com/blog/tick-tock)

The crypto world never ceases to amaze and in a sudden plot twist, iFinex, the parent company of stablecoin issuer Tether and cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex, has “won” an appeal against the New York State Attorney General (NYAG). The appellate division of the state’s Supreme Court granted iFinex’s request to stay a previous court order requiring the company to turn over documents to the Attorney General’s office. This announcement, which has been celebrated as a win by the group, should be taken with a grain of salt because iFinex has until November 4 to “perfect its appeal” according to a court document, or else the company may be required to continue to comply with the investigation. If the case is allowed to proceed actual arguments won’t likely begin until 2020.

the leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin (BTC), is trading sideways, up by 1.18% over the last 24 hours to trade at around $7,970 at press time. Bitcoin has seen low volatility during the day, having dropped to as low as $7,752, while the intraday high reached $8,198.

At the beginning of the day, Bitcoin dipped below $7,800 after the coin touched its four-month lows on Sept. 24, when it crashed $1,500 in 24 hours. The major coin has since been hovering around the $8,000 price mark.

He Who Laughs Last (https://coin360.com/blog/he-who-laughs-last)

The attempted recovery by the market following last week’s dramatic collapse has been rather uneven and choppy, even the planned upgrades to the Ethereum network have failed to act as a catalyst for the next move. As pointed out last week, it is Golden Week holiday in China and trading volumes are likely to be impacted as a result. Looking at the DeFi market, the amount of BTC locked continues to decline (90-day low), while all the same, ETH locked in DeFi is close to a 90-day high and not far from an all-time high. Maker dominance is just over 50%, and 1.41% of total ETH supply is locked in MakerDAO smart contracts.
