Rwandan Government to Label & Track Conflict Metal Tantalum with Blockchain Tech

The government of Rwanda is currently considering tracking the supply chain of the metal tantalum, used in consumer electronics, with distributed ledger technology (DLT). The effort targets to reassure investors over interests on conflict minerals.

Although since 2010 Rwanda has been one of the largest producers of tantalum from mining in the world, the people of this country not only don't benefit, but rather suffer from it. And that is so because the mineral trading is used to fund various armed groups, consequently giving rise to brutal conflicts inside the country. (Hence the name, conflict metal/mineral).

Blockchain technology, if implemented, would surely help to improve this unfortunate situation.

Are there any success stories about someone implementing blockchain tracking of some physical goods in a way that actually solves problems? Because how I see it, there are always some inherent central points of failure when dealing with physical items, so the benefits of blockchain are not as clear as with cryptocurrencies. Like, the people who are responsible for adding data to the blockchain can be bribed, the cargo can be tampered with and so on.
