Title: What happens to the Bitcoin Blockchain if a Extreme Solar Storm hits Earth?

With the premise that every single Computer turned off.

With the premise that every single Computer turned off.

I guess that we'd have to turn them back on again. What happens when a server room goes out in case of a power outage? Diesels and UPS backups kick in. Some server rooms are located underground, some are in bunkers, some are in Faraday cages. You can't damage all computers on Earth at the same time. You'd have to destroy Earth itself to do it.

The EMP would knock out all modern electrical circuits, unless they are protected by a Faraday cage or hardened (like military stuff is). We are regularly hit by activity from solar flares and storms, so unless it's a real monster storm which will  probably trigger an extinction event (ours) then as the song says "don't worry, be happy"

Unless it is protected by a Faraday cage or some other military grade security system, any computer will be knocked out by any kind of Elrctro Magnetic Pulse. Some servers are kept in underground bunker, so that serious solar storm can not harm them, while some are being protected by Faraday cage. So, it will be near impossible to knock out all the computers and the serevers on earth at the same time by any solar storm, regardless of if its size and power.

if earth was to be hit by a large enough solar storm to knock out all electronics

1. "no house electric, no tv to watch, no internet, no phone, ... hmm maybe i should go get something to eat"

2. "SH*T my car wont start i cant drive to the grocery store, ok ill walk"
....... goes for a walk
3. "SH*T the grocery store doors wont open as they are on electronic controls"
....... goes to see if the grocery store were smart enough to use their old fashioned rear fire door as a new entrance
4. "SH*T they were smart enough but they have a sign 'all produce 5000% as stock is low and deliveries wont start up for atleast a month.. and theres a queue half a mile long of desparate people "

5. "SH*T there is gonna be a riot, better prepare for police/state/marshal law conditions"

6. "wait. i got meat in my freezer but no electric to keep it frozen.. hmm.. lets have a local wood fire barbecue and just eat and drink what will go to waste by tomorrow and let everyone else just fight"

7. "beer in my hand(kinda warm now but oh well... ) and as for the blockchain. whoever got zapped woulda been zapped in the day (side of earth facing the sun) so um pretty sure theres a few computer on the dark side of earth(night time at event time) that will survive. and i have my private key/seed safe on non PC format. so.. who wants a warm bear and a drift wood barbequed chicken leg.

8. month(s) later when electronics are repaird/replaced. the electric start returning to homes, peoples repaired computers and cars get returned to peoples homes. people start trying to settle back to normal life. the internet returns..
"oh no the kardashians are still posing for paperazzi". turn on bitcoin node. network starts syncing and we start getting back to normality

Then Bitmain and the ASIC manufacturers will make a ton of money, because there will be a spike in the demand for ASIC chips. A lot of these chips/rigs are not powered on and they will just be fired up again. The internet backbone will have to be "repaired" and this will take some time, but eventually everything will go back to normal.

There are enough hardware in warehouses to replace damaged equipment, but the prices will skyrocket.  ::)

Also remember that the Banking system will be in chaos, because all ATMs and financial systems will be damaged too, so nobody will be able to use credit and debit cards.  ::)

We will return back to the middle ages for a few weeks. ;D
The risk of some extreme solar storm to appear is extrmely low,so why do you bother?
I guess you are watching way too much National Geographic.

I think most people will be concerned about digital fiat transactions, the finance sector would lose billions but those into bitcoin will simply hodl and wait out the storm

It will be near-impossible for such a scenario to happen, though it still can albeit the slim chances. In the event that it presents itself, I'd say the network will still continue since the hard drives aren't compromised in any way. Once the internet and electricity restarts, the network's gears would continue turning and everything will resume to normal as if nothing happened (and that's assuming that no major electricity lines and internet connections are scathed by the scenario.)

Savage...but so true!  ;D
We're done only if that storm never stops, any other case - a lot of distress and angry people who's transaction was unfinished/stuck, and still, you'd have to be really unlucky for that to happen to you
Bitcoin will be the last thing you think of, if all the electricity goes down, imagine value of water over some "money"

I'd guess the same as it would happen to the rest of the world! Everything will be collapsing and everything would be based on immediate survival and I do not think Blockchain would be a priority then.

A catastrophic phenomenon like that would surely fry the circuit of all electronic devices but if your bitcoin is stored in a PC it may all be gone, But if it stored in a cold storage it can be saved, Well I guess If the storm subsides we can just turn on back again a new desktop and electronic devices will simply work, But we can really not be sure if what's gonna happen if a thing like that really happens and we can don't really have any idea if all electronic device would really fry all circuit, I guess it needs research on something like this.

It's the most creative question I've ever heard of these crypts. But I think the last thing we can think of is crypto money.

Hello,

Really original question, apart that they are very few chance that it happen, I think that in that case we will really have many more other more important things to think about !

There will probably still have some computer that could work somethere on protected areas with backups so everything will not be lost and blockchain could restart. But many of people could have lost their computeur so access, pss, wallets..

Well, if that's hypothetically possible to sabotage every computer in earth without extinct the human kind, then the whole economy has to be rebuilt again, cause fiat coins are also depending on computers now. But even after the hypothetical disaster, human will run to save their lives not money I guess.

Come on, it's a little exaggerated. The solar attack. Mining is done in almost every country in the world. Each one must be attacked one by one for the realization of this disaster scenario.

This is a highly unlikely situation. I am sure servers are protected and has backup power to turn on the computers. Do not worry about such things. May this unfortunate day never comes.

Everyone would have been destroyed by then too. But I guess we'd have to turn them back on again. Because you can't damage all computers on earth at the same time. You'd have to destroy earth itself to do it.

Yes point number 8 is the key one! Everything gets replaced and nodes start up
from where the "break in service was".

Why are some people worring about the most obscure events they can think of?
The last thing I would be thinking of is, can I get to work? Is work still operating?
will i get my weekly wage? If not how do I survive until things are back to normal?

With the premise that every single Computer turned off.
All activities carried out by humans through the internet certainly have a backup, in the event of a disaster or blackout, of course there will be a substitute for outages, all data will be stored on the server and have a backup.

In case of an extream solar storm, most of the species will be wiped out and that includes humans too. In such scenario, this would be rethoircal question even if some of the servers still holds some data.

If a extreme solar storm hits earth then it will be a terrible event but I do not think all of the data regarding bitcoin blockchain will be destroyed. Yes, numbers of computers that will destroyed due to it will be enormous and blackout will happen but this kind of important data will be secured in data vaults which can withstand such attack.

In 1859, the world was hit by the worst solar storm till date. Also known as Carrington Event, it made the whole atmosphere heavily charged and as a result telegraph operators could send telegraph without being connected to power source. If a storm of such magnitude happens to hit the earth, the loss will be in the trillions of dollars. A total blackout is very much likely. It will very hard to recover the virtual world as we know it.

Very possible we are going to get a blackout then. If all the devices are shut down there will be a huge loss and we may lose a lot of money.

If that happens you don't need to worry about Blockchain because it is the least thing that you have to worry. Since Blockchain cannot be use without  Internet and power, your holdings are safe.
