Title: Indonesia, the second largest crypto adopter without legality.
Post by: Al-e_x on October 21, 2018, 10:44:34 PM
based on the results of a survey from TNS that collaborated with one of the LUNO crypto exchanges, they concluded that 63% of Indonesian people knew the crypto world.

they realize that crypto is a solution to create a better economy. this percentage defeats Malaysia, France, Italy and Romania.

So, Indonesia is in second place after South Africa with a percentage of 70%.

of 63% of the Indonesian population, they have more bitcoin. Their reason is that bitcoin is the safest and most profitable investment product.

I think this survey is a bit true, because Indonesia is indeed an average bitcoin investor invests in bitcoin, but it is only for the middle class and above, the lower classes cannot recognize bitcoin, not to invest, to follow the development of bitcoin is rather difficult, because indeed they have limitations on that.

Any link though?

63% is huge number but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country_or_territory#Indonesia, says that their Central Bank ssued a regulation banning the use of cryptocurrencies including bitcoin. So I was surprised by the statistics. Anyhow, Asian region is really taking the lead about crypto adoption and I wouldn't be surprised that in 2-5 years crypto will be widely accepted either as cross-border payments or micro payments schemes.

I believe crypto could be making people's life become better, especially in developing countries, bitcoin ever make a huge publicity, the President and the Minister ever mention about crypto, the unemployment rate in Indonesia is quite high and we know how crypto could be the source of income, so crypto are pretty popular in Indonesia

I think it's true. The Indonesian archipelago has a population of 265 million. And even technology and information there are growing. No wonder if Indonesian people adopt Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Even without the legality of the state, people in Indonesia really understand how to manage the economy for themselves

Seeing the results of the survey, I feel that maybe the percentage will not be that big. Indeed, there are already many who know that is something that cannot be denied. If the question of the most desirable investment products, it is clear that it is very desirable and many feel that it is the safest.

I was just surprised by your article that mentions South Africa mark number 1 with 70%. sorry beforehand, because this is indeed the fact that Africa is experiencing a crisis, both economic and their resources. but they actually adopted crypto with precentage number 1 in the world's. we have to believe that, and crypto can really help them in terms of investment and bus help their economy even better.

I think in any reason being a one country that considered a largest crypto adopter is actually not a big deal instead let it considered as a good news for this field because it is prove that the crypto world are now much enhance and better and meet its fully adaptation in a lot of country all over the world. Let us be happy for that because in that way, the more success of cryptosystem in the future will coming soon. more adaptation and legalization will result and credit to this system therefore more people will be much enjoy to the opportunities and benefits that it can give to us as a investors and crypto holders.

first of all a survey saying a certain percentage of people "know" about bitcoin doesn't mean they have also adopted it. it just means they know it exists because they have heard about it in the media or something like that.

secondly there is not much difference between 63% and 70% because there is always a big tolerance for mistake in these percentages because of the way they are conducted.

and your last statement saying they own bitcoin is wrong because if that high a percentage of the population of a country owned bitcoin then price should have been a lot higher than this.

It would be better if OP add to post the source link so we can view it by ourselves. Well, I may agree and because as I observe, Indonesians easily adapted current trends like of this cryptocurrency. No doubt, bitcoin has been already populazired by then and continue to develop, more and more people will get engage in crypto community to enhance financial industry.

Yes, governments that do not acknowledge Bitcoin as a currency, is not banning Bitcoin. Most governments just acknowledge it as a commodity, because they do not want any competition for their own local reserve fiat currency.

Even if they banned it, it will not be stopped, because Bitcoin can still operate in a country where it is banned. China has done everything in their power to make it difficult for people to use Bitcoin and it is still flourishing.  ;D

It is only natural that Indonesia is the second largest country to adopt crypto because of its large population and Indonesia occupies the fourth position in the largest population. Besides that, Indonesia has the opportunity to be a suitable country to be used as bitcoin marketing.

I guess its because these few countries like Philippines where crypto transactions are also very popular, made them also accept crypto. Peer pressure I call it. :P

But honestly there wont be much of an impact, because its  not a rich country and not much of an investment (money in) into the market would happen. But you never know times may change and things may flip. Nevertheless increase in adoption and free trading would only bring it to the news and then maybe legal measure might be taken. But its the government -right? They can always be bribed :D

Regulations and laws coming into the crypto world is inevitable, and so the Indonesians would know soon that lawlessness regarding bitcoin has its limits. Due to the growing popularity of and demand for bitcoin in the said country, the government would soon know that it can be used to channel illegal funds and launder money, so it has to be closely regulated and guarded at all times. Money is money, and we know that the government's best interest lays where the $$$ is at, so Indonesia, too, would surely resort to regulations should the need for it arise.

Considering the population and the economical state of the country, they are doing a great job by earning from the crypto market. Even though the government has not accepted the crypto currency, they have not banned it altogether. Which in turn has paved a path for the population to know crypto system and invest in it.

I'm not Indonesian, but I understand why the Indonesians are investing in the crypto market. Being a fairly low standard of living, even short-term profits in the crypto world, for their economy, are pure gold. People have in their blood the desire to earn more and to live a carefree life. Being cheap to work in Indonesia and cheap products, the money coming from cryptomones can enrich most of the Indonesians.

The report of the survey is really not surprising based on the population that was sampled. If the population sampled is based on those who have affinity with crypto, I am sure their response would be this. I actually would be interested in specific variables of the exercise. Looking at reports like this, it tend to start attracting attention where it is least needed as authorities tend to begin crack down the moment they cannot come up with regulations that generate revenue and at the same time reduce the criminal activities that crypto is used for.

lol we know how inaccurate those survey as that is only made with couple of people and not the entire volume so lets not rely on the outcome.instead lets look worldwide why the cryptocurrency dont become more popular in other countries while others did.its on the people and government attitude.in some asian countries theres no specific  support from government but they dont also put restrictions at the same time

Is there a survey link about this? even if it is true it is very encouraging. But to my knowledge Indonesia is a very large country and certainly not all people are affordable with internet networks. so the 63% figure is rather excessive.

Indonesia is the largest country and has a huge population they know the importance of cryptocurrency in their daily life and even their economic sector. Though crypto is not legal in Indonesia after that Indonesian people are doing business with crypto that means crypto is very much popular in there to meet their demand and financial solvency.

I prefer to say that only a few percent of Indonesians know crypto money. Of that number only a portion of those who adopted crypto money like bitcoin in the majority and altcoin as optional.

I've asked 50 of my acquaintances in jakarta coz I live here, it turns out that only three people have heard the word bitcoin but don't know what is it for.

I saw Luno ads this year on website and claimed to have had two million customers, meanwhile Indodax, which has long been a crypto exchanger, has less than one and a half million customers.

Other interesting fact is when you go to a big bookstore and ask for bitcoin book in Bahasa, you will find two or three Indonesian author there.

For legality, I agree with other members here that Indonesia never allow cryptomoney as currency.

Well, if the Indonesian people likes the bitcoin that much then it's really good for them. But talking of legality, if this huge amount of population believes and invest in such a coin, then illegality is merely a mark for them. And other countries might wanna keep an eye on their economy whether it grows or falls with this large kinds but coin investment.

The people of Indonesia understand the vast potential cryptocurrency offers which plays a part on motivating them to invest in it. The percentage of people in their country accurate or not can still be said that it is high in order to rank like this. Just goes to show if a government legalized cryptocurrency or not, if people deem it useful and see the potential anything can happen as we can see now. Hopefully we'll see their government change their views on it too, only with time.

Crypto isn't better solution for economy, it's a payment way and currency at the same time, has it's pros and cons, it's not revolutionary thing. If you disagree, then write arguments, I'll do the same.
And now, who said bitcoin is illegal anywhere? If you can use it as you wish, if no one sends you in jail for transaction, buy things from amazon, ebay and etc, do everything and pay everything, everyone you wish and still you are free, then how is it illegal? Don't you guys know ehat legal and illegal means? That's insane.

We don't know the truth for this, and we only know based on that survey. We still don't know how much percentage of the people who are using bitcoin. Yes, the Indonesian government seems to want Indonesians to find no losses caused by Cryptocurrency. So the Indonesian government has not legalized Crypto in Indonesia until now. But in my opinion, if Crypto users are already very much in Indonesia, it is better for the Government to legalize bitcoin as the second currency after IDR. the majority of Indonesians use cryptocurrency as a tool to make money, without understanding the uniqueness of blockchain technology

Indonesia's total population at the end of 2017 is 264 million. 63% means around 166 million. I doubt the results of the survey with two assumptions. First, the crypto currency in Indonesia is still not recognized as a legitimate payment instrument. Second, the average of Indonesian population lives in the village and with a low economic level. I don't think people will invest their money in crypto currency while their lives are still low. Indeed, the number of people who knows and invest in crypto is big but the percentage isn't that huge.

as an Indonesian citizen, I can say that the survey can be said to be true. that the cryptocurrency market here is able to run without any definite legality or regulation from the government. around the beginning of 2018, Indonesian banks (government central banks) briefly issued a statement to ban bitcoin. but over time, that did not happen. the central bank only limits crypto use as an investment in digital assets / trading, crypto is not permitted for transaction tools, and this is indeed not yet possible, because there are no goods companies that accept crypto payments. besides the Indonesian president, In his speech, Mr. Joko Widodo stated that everyone must be ready to accept blockchain technology (which is used by crypto), because this is a future innovation, you can find it on youtube.

but if the data says 63% of Indonesians know the crypto world I think that number is too excessive. even in big cities like the capital city of Jakarta, or in the academic environment of universities, there are still many people who don't know the crypto industry in depth, maybe they simply know what bitcoin is from the news in the media. then what about the village community? without reducing respect, I'm not even sure they know Bitcoin especially crypto as a whole.

If large portion of the Indonesian population are in crypto and other countries while the Asian countries are also coming to the crypto world and bitcoin is useful but those who understand that crypto is important to them they are availing every opportunity of crypto and if Indonesian allow this as legal then 95% of them will use it.

introducing bitcoin and the world of cryptocurrency is important, I think because I am also an Indonesian, of course the most important thing in bitcoin is not just a value, but also introducing them about bitcoin or other crypto currencies through writing or explaining to them directly, I I think there will be many other adopters who grow up there, of course, in that way it will grow faster

I feel proud of being an Indonesian who has the second largest percentage of crypto holders even though our country still prohibits crypto as a digital currency, but hopefully the country knows this percentage value and considers the desire of its people to crypto and give them more room to work
When a high-quality cryptocurrency control apparatus appears, legitimize exchange operations in Indonesia

Its's just maybe because same as my country the salary they got was not enough to make a living.

Their reason is that bitcoin is the safest and most profitable investment product.
And this is where they are going wrong. First of all, bitcoin is not the safest option to invest your hard money on. At least if you are thinking of short term investment. The price fluctuation is very high and the price might skyrocket or get dumped without any prior notice. And they are using bitcoin just to make profit. They will cash out and go back to fiat once their profit goal is reached. So this means that they have not adopted it usage, they are just using it as a form of asset storage.

cannot be denied if Indonesia is one of the countries that has the largest percentage of bitcoin usage. now Indonesia only needs legality from the government, I'm sure if Indonesia has these legalities it will certainly continue to be able to make cryptocurrency increasingly large, especially bitcoin.

I agree and I am Indonesian so it is true that you say Indonesia at this time may and is allowed to manage and play Bitcoin as long as you know yourself and do not harm yourself and the country

The Indonesian government does not impose any regulation on electronic money, so people are free to trade bitcoin and keep bitcoin for the future. Bitcoin is helping people in this country have a better life.

Despite the prohibition, Indonesian officials have taken a brave stance towards the adoption of cryptocurrencies and blockchain. Last year, Bank Indonesia restrict the corporate and fintech companies to use the cryptocurrencies for transactions without prohibiting the trade of digital tokens itself. The Indonesian regulators are positive toward blockchain technology and unveiled that they have the plan to issue its own cryptocurrency or digital Rupiah based on this technology. indonesia isnt a large country and there are other countries in asia that is more involved in cryptocurrency like for example singapore  , japan , philippines .  indonesia isnt also a wealthy country so think there is only a few crypto users in this country , that is why i dont agree on the title of this topic  .  indonesia isnt the second largest crypto adopter  .

Quote

no thats not true ,  converting a crypto to local currency does not required a kyc because a kyc is only for investing on an ico  .  kyc can also be found when creating accounts on other high end platform .

indonesia by far is one of hugh asean country with population of 200,000,000 people.  the adoption rate of crypto is rather high.

267 million more precisely and we are the country with the largest population in Southeast Asia.

http://bappebti.go.id/resources/docs/peraturan/sk_kep_kepala_bappebti/sk_kep_kepala_bappebti_2019_02_01_w9i365pf_id.pdf

And for the issue of cryptocurrency legality in Indonesia, as stated by OP, it is very clear. There are already regulations that are the legal basis for trading cryptocurrency assets as one of the tradable commodities.
The regulation certainly can stimulate the interest of the Indonesian people to accept and develop cryptocurrency, certainty and legal protection and also regulate the provisions on anti-money laundering and the prevention of funding of terrorism. This will certainly make Indonesia a cryptocurrency center in Southeast Asia.

That’s for sure, crypto is a great source of income especially in developing countries. If the unemployment rate in a country is very high, people just start to look for other options how to earn money and become their life better. And crypto market offers many opportunities for that.

I think the governments should take a brief note of this and stop threatening people how they would ban the cryptocurrencies.

The government wants us to invest in their own made currency but that is not always possible.

This is a very good example, I hope other countries follow through.

Here the bitcoin was send to the families of the plantation workers as they were miles away from their native locations.

Bitcoin is one form of the New Payment Method (NPM) consisting of virtual currencies that still have not received clear and explicit arrangements used in their use which are often used for follow-up transaction results. The Indonesian government finally legalized the trading of Bitcoin crypto assets and the like. The Ministry of Trade's Commodity Futures Trading Supervisory Agency (Bappebti) finally issued a regulation on the Technical Provisions for the Implementation of the Physical Market of Crypto Assets (Crypto Assets) on the Futures Exchange.
In the Bappebti regulation number 5 of 2019, Bappebti decides that the crypto assets that must be approved must meet certain requirements.
First, based on distributed ledger technology. Second, it consists of crypto utility or Crypto Backed Asset. Third, the market capitalization value is in the top 500 of the market share of crypto assets (coinmarketcap) for crypto utility assets. Fourth, it is included in the world's largest crypto asset exchange transaction. Fifth, crypto assets must also have economic benefits, such as taxation, grow industrial information and competence of experts in the field of informatics. Sixth, the risk of crypto assets has been agreed, including the risk of money laundering and terrorism, as well as the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

From what I know, in Indonesia, it is prohibiting bitcoin as a means of payment tool, but it still allows as a digital asset at the risk of each user's responsibility. And yes it's true, there are many users of bitcoin in Indonesia.
Yeah thats right, In Indonesia Bitcoin/Crypto should not be used as a means of payment, but the government there allows their people to have Bitcoin as just a precious commodity like gold. So it can be said Bitcoin/Crypto is digital gold in Indonesia.

Users in Indonesia can't use Bitcoin as a payment method in their own country but they can use it elswhere and online and that can't actually be controlled or stopped. Also, Indonesia is not one of the richest or the most developed countries in the world so people there see their opportunity in Bitcoin, that is also the reason why Indonesia has so much Bitcoin users. Similar is in other developing countries.

There is no regulation in Indonesia that prohibits using payment methods with bitcoin or crypto. Even the Indonesian government has not clearly legalized the regulation of Bitcoin. So far, only banks that criticize the use of bitcoin and the government are not responsible for everything that is caused by bitcoin, so Indonesian people are free to use bitcoin as a payment method but they cannot have legal protection and are fully borne by the user.

I would not trust a single research even by a legit company
there are so many variables that could lead to wrong extrapolations and the wrong results
how do the polls like this work? they ask a certain percent of the population , trying to represent the certain age groups , regions , professions etc.
they take, for example , 2000 respondents and extrapolate the results by 13000  , roughly ( population of Indonesia is 260 mil )
obviously , the companies cannot afford to question even 100.000 people , not even talking about a million
so the less people they question , the less reliable the results are
as far as I know , in Indonesia it is not about the cryptocurrencies boom , but about the low economical and living standards and low wages
statistically , most of the faucet and bounty campaign users are from  Indonesia , India , Ukraine etc. - people are simply trying to earn an extra buck
doesn't mean they are the grand adopters or know much about blockchain or similar things

Indonesia could've got increased number of cryptocurrency users and it I don't find this to have the second largest in terms of அடி adoption without legality. This year Indonesia has legalized it as a trading commodity which could've bought good number of users into it. This way they have everything to be in a organized structure with regular audit, client support. This is being taken by government to support the people who like to invest into cryptocurrency but quite often gets cheated by scams. This will give protection to those people. This way government has been supporting bitcoin in some way which could've boosted the userbase.

The existence of virtual currency, as well as Bitcoin CS in Indonesia has already got a green light from the Commodity Futures Trading Supervisory Agency (BAPPEBTI). However, Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) still prohibit the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment in the homeland. This digital money is also not a financial industry product.

That is the true sentiment as majority of these users are aware about bitcoin and the campaigns and the users from these poor countries are simply trying to take advantage of the situation to earn a simple bounty and majority of them have no business to understand the basic functioning of blockchain but you cannot neglect the fact that they are still adopting the crypto market to collect all the dust tokens they collected through all these airdrops and campaigns that are available ;D.
