Title: Worldwide blockchain developers stats
Post by: phwizard on October 23, 2018, 06:11:40 PM
May be useful for someone here looking for analytics / deciding where to place their R&D team etc.

We've crunched the numbers from Linkedin etc and produced statistics on blockchain developers worldwide.

In absolute numbers US, India and UK come first.

TOP 10 (absolute number of blockchain developers)
1. United States
2. India
3. United Kingdom
4. Canada
5. France
6. Germany
7. Netherlands
8. Australia
9. Spain
10. Brazil

In relative numbers (% of population) the leading countries are Malta, Luxembourg and Singapore.

TOP 10 (blockchain developers relative to overall population)
1. Malta
2. Luxembourg
3. Singapore
4. Switzerland
5. Netherlands
6. Cyprus
7. Slovenia
8. Ireland
9. Estonia
10. Canada

I'm pleasantly surprised with India they ban cryptocurrency but it is still listed as one of the tops anyway some of the cryptocurrency developers are from India their people are some of the best coder and developers their government should take ease in cryptocurrency, they have a lot of talented people there.

Great research!

This is very useful to focus which region to target when dealing with blockchain business.

Thanks.

Interesting information you’ve got there. The output is interesting enough to get a general idea of block chain developers per country, and I was not aware of it’s penetration per country until I came across your post.

I guess the info is derived from CV profiles, not job offers, and is not as yet time-based (i.e. each individual is scanned for the keyword terms, but not delimited to a certain date range). If you want to share the methodology at some point used to retrieve the data, it would help to strengthen the information presented in the referenced article/OP (i.e. Number of scanned profiles, number of non-retrievable or non-scanable profiles).

Note: As seen on you’re previous posts, you seem to work at the corporation that compiled the data, so I’ll merit the OP for sharing this info.

I was surprised by the lack of names of countries such as Japan "Satoshi :D" and China. There must be a proper proportion of developers in those countries.
I do not know how such information was collected, but it is good that there are developers who appear publicly because of the bad connection between this technology and identity.

ok, now OP
do a list based on those names and how many lines of code they have committed into bitcoins code.

many people write they are 'bitcoin developers' i have even seen a few that simple grammar check documentation to claim they are bitcoin contributors/devs but actually dont do much, if anything

The full list is a bit more interesting than just the top 10.
I had no idea that North Korea had 1 developer working on Ethereum :P

Who is this person? Would be neat if he would do an AMA for example.

its because "bitcoin" developers are CORE developers. who have their github defaulted to english.
it would be nice if we had multiple teams with multiple FULL NODE implementations all with there own proposals process to improve bitcoin.. then you would see many countries writing their own software in their own native languages. but things have been centralised to one main team of whom need to be able to speak english to be able to communicate things to the moderators of core, just to be able to have a chance
(example SIPA, from the netherlands. but having to write bitcoin code in english and discuss his proposals in english)

India does not completely ban bitcoin but prohibits the use of bitcoin for payment instruments. I can't understand where the data came from, is it based on ICO?

India and to some extent US win in absolute numbers because of population size.
As this IndianWeb post  (https://www.indianweb2.com/2018/10/28/india-behind-only-u-s-in-countries-with-most-no-of-blockchain-developers/) quoting our report has pointed out, in relative numbers India has 8 times less developers than US and 42 less than Malta.

Also as far as I understand, ban only happened this year in India, and obviously there have been lots of developers by that time already.

Last but not least obviously there is a difference between trading crypto (banned), creating technology for crypto (not banned) and creating other blockchain powered projects (not banned).

I'm supprised that Malta is the top 1 in the blockchain developer relative over population

I have received the following feedback from someone who is actively engaged with blockchain ecosystem in Malta:

Quote
I’d question the quality and experience of developer in malta to be very honest. Everyone just adds Blockchain to their title nowadays on this rock... it’s very disappointing

She has also referred to an article saying two thirds of cryptocurrency agent certificate applicants in Malta have failed a cryptocurrency exam.

Our data is based mainly on open Linkedin profiles and CVs information.

As franky1 and others have mentioned here, it would be better to have somehow test the candidates, but it's impossible with these numbers.

Still this is useful to understand the overall trend as similar issue of "not true developers" would be relevant to other countries as well, but in the full picture hopefully we can see the true trend.

This is a valid point. I agree with you that Japan and China are most likely underepresented in the report due to developers and enthusiasts there not using same business social networks (Linkedin) and jobs websites as in most other parts of the world. We'll work to fix this by sourcing more data from local specific resources. Thank you for your feedback.

Thank you so much for the merit and yes I do hope this information is useful for readers here. Yes I'm founder/CEO at Dappros and this is our report.

Information comes mainly from Linkedin profiles.

As per your request shared source data here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ys-5AHGqrFBUk6CseGW69qR4NWLoeA98mwQP4lXB5ok/edit#gid=944538890 which includes some formulas etc.
but we have not logged all full details such as non-scannable profiles.

Based on feedback received here and in other places I feel it would be useful to prepare a new version of report improving our methodology on detecting developer vs non-developer as well as using more sources for China and other locations. Will make sure to keep track of details such as you mentioned so it's better prepared for peer review.

Also happy to prepare more detailed reports looking into country / region and extracting more granular data there - any requests / feedback here are welcome.

very interesting information you have gathered here but i believe the source of it (Linkedin) is not the best way of getting statistics. it is based on what people claim to have done. and unless you have actually gone through their resumes and verified if they have done anything meaningful in the field their claims are not reliable.

i was also half expected to see  countries like India there since their people are always among programmers anyways.

Because India is still inclined to technology. With their huge population, its just a matter of time before they found their niche and fortunately, its in the IT sector. I remember back then (prior to 00's), there are a lot of expats in our company and most of them are from India or are India descent from US.

How can the data be valid? If it's based on the CV profile of each individual then that will be counted is inaccurate, most of them use the keyword "crypto" so all parts will enter. I think this is unfair if it is said to be blockchain development statistics.

in absolute numbers, I see that Brazil will compete with the Philippines, 80% of the population in the Philippines adopt blockchain technology. and beside that, the public also gets great support from the government.

the government accesses every path for businesses that have blockchain features.

That is why I suggested to @phwizard to include some more detail as to the methodology used to derive the data (nº of CVs parsed/non-parsable, keywords, and assuring keywords are used in a developer content as opposed to non-developper).
The stat is likely a decent approximation though, based on referenced keywords (I don't know how job roles are treated), but degrees of real expertise behind each CV is obviously not going to be evaluated. @phwizard has provided additional information on this thread, with a link to some of the underlying aggregate absolute and proportional data: Since he is actively responding to questions here, he will likely get back to you on your concerns.

@phwizard, just to point out that it is common practice to answer multiple posts within a single post (quoting whatever is necessary from each), in order to avoid posting multiple times in a row...
