Title: BrainWallets ? Are they dead ? Is there any replacement to them ?
Post by: 5thFear on October 28, 2018, 06:51:08 PM
Hi.

I loved the idea of Brainwallets but yes, they have their security issues. But to every issue there has to be a solution instead of just killing that idea. So i was thinking if there is any replacement to it or is it just dead taking the idea with it to the grave.

I would love to learn about it or its replacement, if any.

Thanks.

No I don't think they are dead. Yes they have some problems to fix but I think they would fix their security problems and would turn it to their favour. Its too early to declare them dead.

but to some problems there is no solution.

the problem with brainwallets is that they rely on human behavior and humans are not known to be capable of creating a decent random entropy. you can not do anything about this to change it short of changing every human being.
that is why they have never been a good idea and will never be a good idea ever.

All that website does is compute a bunch of addresses based on private keys each time you visit one of their pages. The chances that you will come across a page containing the private key to an address that has ever received any Bitcoin is essentially zero.Need an alternative site for a little research project.

Why do you say that the idea is dead? You can still use brainwallets with bitcoin and many other coins that use pass phrases or sets of words as recovery options for users.

The idea never dies. The coin mightn't go on for their lack of market grabbing capacity, but that doesn't mean the idea was bad. And any good idea might reappear anytime, you just have to wait.

if my own mother wants me to stay in that field whatever the risk is, because I am committed I will continue to survive and if there is a breakthrough it would be better not to hurt my new development. to learn new ones so we are ready next year.

There are a lot of wallet out there in the market. Brainwallet has a lot of good sides, but the security isue is really a problem. A wallet with security problems should always be avoided. There are wallets in the market theat have attributes closer to the Brainwallet but has better security.

Can you please guide me in that direction ? i mean the wallets that use the brainwallet kind of concept.

brainwallet is just a code that takes an string input and turns that into a private key or seed in some cases. this code can not die!!! it still exists out there, there are even sites that do it. you can find the source code on github too.

but people now know how bad using a brainwallet is and they are aware of the risks so they don't use them at all anymore.

Using brainwallet can be very risky and dangerous.
WarpWallet tool is more secure and better in comparison with brainwallet.
