Title: Bitcoin on Climate Change
Post by: EllieBasti05 on November 08, 2018, 04:20:10 PM
Bitcoin needs electricity to exists and demands a massive amount of it.

How can we solve that problem ? will the people take good care of the earth to prevent the climate change? or will take good care of their bitcoin because of investments?

After bitcoin changed our lives and lifestyle what will be our biggest contribution to prevent the global warming?

Upon reading news they say 11 to 22 years in the future 2 degree celsius will be added as per international climate scientists. Its very alarming.

Will the next generation benefit to see the beautiful earth? or benefit on using the cryptocurrency?

Lets talk about it, share your thoughts.

Tbh, I don't see bitcoin being the greater of all the evils contributing to climate change. There are still factories burning a lot of fossil fuels and automotive using the same type of fuel for the past decades or so. All of these carbon emissions are already there together with the talks about climate change way before bitcoin hit the radar of so-called 'concerned' citizens. If I were to ask, there's really not much we can do about the power consumption of the miners and we're not the only industry to use such levels of power consumption in the world.

Switching to PoS is not a bright move, and if we really want to save this world, look for better and cleaner alternative energy solutions and ditch the fossil fuels.

lets take some bitcoin hazard titles and put them into prospective

"bitcoin electric demand is high"
"bitcoin international currency uses more electric than ireland"
"bitcoin international currency uses more electric than denmark"
"bitcoin is 50% mined in china"

ok the entire 50 exahash mining average of bitcoin = 40twh a year
lets say 'china' did had 50% (they dont, but play devils advocate)

20twh a a year
china produce over 6000twh a yea. so bitcoin as a INTERNATIONAL CURRENCY for any 200+countries. uses up 0.3% of 1 country.. and thats a percentage extremitized under the narrow minded extremes of 'china 51%' mindsets

the reality is mining is more spread out then people think. bitcoin mining is not even using 0.1% of china.

as for solving issues about electric utility
1. be glad its not mined using diesel. EG gold excavators and sluice machines
2. the main pools/farms use renewable energy such as hydro as its the most reliable stored potential(reservoir) cheapest electric
3. pools tagged as china are more distributed than reddit/twitter want you to think
4. imagine mining 50exahash by CPU (10 trillion CPU requirement).. GPU(300billion GPU)
5. bitcoin is mined using just 3.6mill ASICS. which is more energy efficient than CPU/GPU by many thousand folds
6. the big mining farms dont just tap into residential demand causing brownouts. they actually contract big purchases from the EXCESS(gap between demand and production) that would go to waste anyway
7. power stations love this as they have more income which allows them to expand sooner to future proof their power plant industry

I have to second this. Bitcoin mining takes up a lot of power consumption, however, I doubt it is contributing greatly in climate change. For one, there are not much bitcoin miners compared to factories burning fossil fuels that have been in operation for far longer than bitcoin miners. To be honest, I do not understand why people keep associating bitcoin mining with climate change getting worse. If we look closely into the effects of climate change, there are much more things we can put our blame on. Mining bitcoin should not be on top of the list.

Saving the planet with all means is a good idea. Bitcoin mining consume so much electricity power and hence pose a dangerous threat to our generation  and the generation unborn, let say no to climate change, no matter the benefit been derive from the said project. This will destroy our lands and create the untold nightmare of our existence on the planet earth.

Indeed, why many do not notice the harm that is caused to nature, for example, chemical or pharmacological industry. Many smart people realize that the rough use of electricity for bitcoin mining will soon disappear.Because alternative energy sources will not harm nature and will be in symbiosis with the mining of cryptocurrency bring only good.If you pay attention to the ICO that have recently appeared,we can conclude that such startups will prevent an environmental disaster.Startups that I know and in principle I really like them:https://www.zerocarbonproject.com/ (https://www.zerocarbonproject.com/) https://eloncity.io/ (https://eloncity.io/) https://solarex.io/ (https://solarex.io/) https://kwhcoin.com/#/ (https://kwhcoin.com/#/)

what are you afraid of the fate of future generations, they will always adapt to their environment through growth, the beauty of the earth will not be damaged by the existence of cryptocurrency, and the increase in the value of bitcoin will be even greater with the emergence of future generations, their lives will be better by engaging in cryptocurrency

People need energy for their human activities and mean value of consumption of electricity by capita at rise. Bitcoin mining is just one of these activities. Although there are many things that must be done by electricity suppliers and goverments to reduce emissions, blaming only bitcoin miners for climate change is not reasonable.

The quantity of energy being used is not an issue but the source of the energy is.
There is no fight against increased power productions (it's advocated for even)
But there is a quest for pure, environmentally friendly and renewable source of energy

I do not think that this will be caused solely because of the production of cryptocurrencies. The faster each person will understand that it is necessary not to pollute the surrounding air and reduce the amount of harmful air in the atmosphere, then it will not be necessary to look for the guilty.Cryptocurrency anonymous means all the blame can be put on it.This is a pathetic excuse for not wanting to change anything in society.Society in fact no longer lives.People do not even know how their body works, pharmacological firms are not interested in healthy people. The sooner humanity realizes that our common Home is the Earth, the faster all kinds of cataclysms and wars will disappear. And the question of temperature rise will disappear by itself.(if of course something will depend on the person; I just not so long ago heard that the sun itself began to emit more heat than usual;in this situation, no one in the world can not change anything)

Seems that there are a lot of topics being created about this, this is like the 5th I've seen in Bitcoin Discussion.

Why are people so quick to point fingers at Bitcoin? It's just ridiculous in my opinion, it's all too easy to just blame Bitcoin for the mistakes of all of mankind.
Okay I may be exaggerating a bit, but that's what it kinda looks like.

How about we focus on switching to cleaner energy sources, so this wouldn't even be an issue.

Yes, technological progress like Bitcoin may contribute to the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere, but is it really Bitcoin's fault? (if you can even put blame on an abstract concept like Bitcoin)
Technological progress comes at a cost and I personally think that it's worth it.

Worth destroying the planet over? No, but again, that has nothing to do with Bitcoin...

There are 2 approaches with this, either change bitcoin mining so it's less energy intensive, or find a solution for the energy crisis in the form of renewable energy. I'm inclined towards the second one because it's a global solution rather than an industry specific one. Even if all bitcoin mining ceased to happen tomorrow, we would still experience ever increasing climate change, because there are far too many other problem areas.

the problem is that newbies are told to read about the ethos of 2009. 1PC one vote CPU mining
thus people think they can mine coin and become rich with their home pc at no more cost than the home pc..

then reality hits of not being a get rich quick.

their first response is to blame bitcoin for why they are not rich and then they run into the forum to try to propose a way they as just a small home user can get rich quick by PoS...

but again not realising that PoS wont make them rich.
its not actually about climate change. its about abusing the buzzword climate change, to try to sway emotions. ... yet those abusing climate change buzzword dont realise that if things did change. nothing changes. the promoter wont get rich and the electric produced by power stations wont change.

Although bitcoin mining  seems to be contributing to global warming, I believe there is still hope to make the world better through better research projects to provide cleaner energy to power the high consuming mining plants. Even aside bitcoin mining, there are larger industries that are consuming more than bitcoin mining plants at the moment. Climate change is concern for everyone on earth, I believe we can apply blockchain technology to make the situation better.

Yeah tell that to the plastic companies.
;D

Should we really go through this?
Blaming it on bitcoin suddenly because of electricity usage?
Aint we all using it the same way?
Kill all the people in this world and you wont see any climate change that will happen. ;D

We should mine in Pluto.  ;D It should be in the cold enough planet. But POW is in the near obsolete feature of crypto. Because of the slowly progressing time for the green economy, it is also imperative for crypto to be environmentally aligned. Good thing there are measure really to keep it mineable without damaging the environment to some extent.

electricity is our primary need, anything requires electricity, but bitcoin mining consumes more electricity.

in the future, people will take care of the earth and maintain their bitcoin investment, so they will not only preserve the earth, but also get profit from bitcoin.

a technological character is free, and always develops every day. so, in the future, we will find facilities to save electricity. so, our generation will see the beautiful earth and use bitcoin for all their needs.

what problem? a lot of other things also need electricity and many of them need lots of it, a lot more than bitcoin. you can go to your fuse box and disconnect your electricity for half a day and you will see how much YOU need electricity. needing it is not a problem.

it is about priorities when it comes to global warming. there currently are a lot of industries that are producing huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in addition to lots of other polluting substances into the air and water. on a scale of 1 to 10 bitcoin is on 1 and these industries on are 20!!! you first have to fight those instead of blinding yourself with something that is not doing any harm.

Bitcoin will help to prevent global warming, when it disrupts the large financial institutions that are doing the most harm. Take the Banking sector as an example :

1. They have to transfer cash in armoured vehicles. <Air pollution by burning fossil fuel>
2. They spend electricity in their Bank branches. <Air Con, CCTV, Vaults, ATMs, computers, lights>
3. Running their massive server rooms and mainframes.
4. Their employees driving to work <Air pollution by burning fossil fuel>

These are just some of the things that these institutions are doing to contribute to global warming, compared to Bitcoin's small footprint.

As far as I know mining is expensive and will requires high technologies to make every components faster and very satisfaction when use. Mining needs electricity and electricity needs oil, head, and whatever natural resources that related to electricity. Climate change is the effect of using large amount of electricity. How to resolve this if there are a lot bitcoin miners.
