hello long story short,

back in 2015 i sent 18 something btc to my sister, as we were splitting family assets, i took some extra cash for those cash, later 2015 she moved out of country with her husband, and we lost touch. i think price was around 200$. now when i visited her after all these years i found out her laptop was damaged due to water spill and i suddenly remembered the bitcoins i sent her, so i took the drive from laptop and recoverd wallet.dat file.

so i purchased a server and now i am trying to get those coins back, and good thing is that my sister only wants $$ amount she doesn't believe in online tech, so its a lucky day for me. not to mention that i got scammed for 10 btc recently so its a really good thing to catch up.

There are so much bitcoin which has been lost in hard drives and flash drives, some under mining sites.

WOW, you are recovering a fortune, that's a lot of BTC and it's now going to set you and your family free. I do hope though you give something to your Sister as well and not be too greedy only keeping it all for yourself lol. Maybe buy her a new laptop and some gifts. I think sharing is caring and especially if you are making so much money form all that Bitcoin, giving some family gifts would be nice to show your kindness and generosity to them. I wish you well and enjoy the fruits of your labor and hope you are also wise with the money when you sell those Bitcoins and don't waste it on crap stuff lol.

It is just because of your efforts, knowledge and experience OP that these BTC will be recovered.  If you do not take initiative to recover then these BTC will have been useless.
You have to pay your sister in dollars.  Are you going to pay her 2015 market price?  Whether she knows current market price and is still ready to accept old price of 2015?  If without bringing the facts in her  knowledge old market price 200 dollar per btc is paid ; is not it cheating?  
IMO that you must tell her the current market price; and then she also should reward you with sufficient amount.  
I am sympathetic to you because you lost few btc recently.

Damn op. You are one lucky guy. I know so many people who lost their Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency assets and never recovered them due to the complications involved, but you are one of the lucky ones clearly.

I advise HODLING that BTC though since you could be losing a big portion of profits if Bitcoin rallies in the future which it most likely will. HODLING is the better strategy in this scenario. The icing on the cake is the fact that you recovered your lost BTC during the holiday season.

Running a hot wallet on a VPS isn't the best idea.

Wow if I only know how to crack wallets I will join this challenge. Hope someone could open and restore your wallet.  But theres a question in my mind, if cracking wallets is true. Why no one dares to crack the Genesis BTC Address.

We are all here to share experience and help one another, there are many members here who have lost their device or got it damaged and they have some coins there which they have been struggling to recover. If by chance you were able to retrieve your BTC do go ahead and publish your magic so that others will learn and this will keep the forum going.

I really think it is still reasonable to tell your sister about the value of bitcoin now it is hers the first place and because you had recovered it for her you can simply ask her nicely about sharing some for you, I really think that is the best way to do and sharing the technology of bitcoin will surely not just a win for her but for you as well because right now she will be interested with bitcoin now, In my opinion family should comes first and you can still earn that bitcoin that had been scam to you, But still congrats in retrieving the lost bitcoin and just tell the truth about the value now because she might learn it somewhere else.

Good luck to you. Your so lucky if you recover your bitcoin. I also have a friend who is trying recover his wallet containing a big amount of crypto. He lost the address or the key (I am not sure which one) so he have no access directly to his wallet. Up to now, he is not recovering the crypto but in your case, I think it is possible for you to recover it.

why would you need to purchase a server?
to crack password protected wallet or just to download full blockchain?
the image you posted shows core wallet synching up... so I assume for syncing and not cracking :-\
wouldn't it be easier to just dump all private keys and recover using electrum or other spv wallets

This is just a luck for you.  Congrats to you and your sister.  That was a like form of long term investment for you both.  No one knew things would be like this that it even went to 19k . That's a massive whooping profit.  I think long term investement in cryptocurrency is still the best. 

i am developer myself, so i have lot of servers and i thought it would be easy to recover from core wallet

i already told her the current value of coins and she doesn't want anything since its been so long and she is so old then me, still i am thinking to pay her 300$ per BTC ( 50% profit ), reason is i know she will give $$ to her husband, i will hold the rest of coins, she is my sister so incase she needs more she can always say it.

yes we completely forgot about it, she is not into technology and she kept it in storage room .

What you said is correct as you know that she will give to her husband so you wanted to protect her. That is good view as in future if she needs financial help then you can help her and tell her not to pay as it is her own money. Which will make her happy. :)

This kind of challenge is my weakness, even though I am interested in the gifts offered but this is beyond my ability, before you have hidden the btc prize with the amount of 0.169btc, this is amazing for you

It's also pretty amazing that the op totally forgot about those 18 bitcoins he gave to her sister and decided to look into it only now.
The price is low and if you have enough fiat to make it up to her, I think it is a mutually beneficial thing. However, it's pretty much like buying 18 bitcoins on any decent exchange right now, no? It's not like she wants 18 btc under the $200 price, right? In case she does, I think you should give her at least a half of the real price for it to be fair. Good luck for those bitcoins!

Hello, the interesting story you have. To my mind, it is good that you have managed to do this! I like btc and i am careful with it keeping it for the long-term and using Binance which i consider to be the reliable platform now

i dont know your sister agree or not when you bring him laptop and recovery him bitcoin you gived. you have to give him some value and say to him about your work.  how much time when you already download that core already, bitcoin will be rise and you got profit

2015 until now is a good spread of price, at least you get profit a lot. Something that can recovered back like bitcoin wallet can be example that it is better to save bitcoin ini hardware wallet. Because you still have chance to recover it when you loss your wallet.

Wow good for you and congrats for the long time ago forgotten investment, in not expected time you got good profits earning because as you at time you sent bitcoin in your sister price is in the lower value, then now even if people this current price of bitcoin is in the lower price it's obvious you get huge of profits.

Well, mate, That's your own choices we cannot dictate people what will they do or not, Still, it's wonderful for you not forget that you have this amount of BTC in the past, I think you are the guy that is blessed with luck.

Well at one stage you will have to sell, if you want to pay back your sister at the $300 per coin price.  ::)  I reckon you do not like your sisters husband a lot, so why not rather place some of this money into a fixed savings account and then pay her a monthly interest? Obviously you can give her a higher percentage of the returns on the coins, because $300 per coin sounds a bit unfair.

Just do a 50/50% split to pay for your recovery skills and deposit that into a fixed savings account. This way the Bank will be paying back your share from interest.  :D  <She might be able to cover some monthly expenses with that interest, like NetFlix or Internet>  ::)

You only need to sync up to 2015 for the coins to show up.

I think it's not as easy as you think ???, because bitcoin works by a large number of users, and it depends on the number of people. It can not be cured by someone or a system, a program.

update bitcoin recovered and btc went 8% down as i proceeded to sell it !

Wow! Big congratulations is a good one retrieving lost millions of Dollars $ after you think all hope was gone. But another thing is to use the funds positively because sometimes we don't cherish what we got at a plaster of Gold we take it to be normal and never come up with something good out of it. So I will advice you invest positive for your self and your family.

That's true at least he has recovered it and can still hold it and just wait for the price to increase again in the future, this is a great story and 3 years of wait to recover is indeed great, if I were you I will just hold it what I am going to lose since it's already lost and just recovered.
