Title: New Telegram Scam: be aware of Malware files!
Post by: chenille on November 24, 2018, 04:57:36 PM
There is a new scam trend in Telegram, but if you know about it, it’s quite easy to avoid. The scammers send malware files to a public Telegram group to reach a large number of potential victims.
These files in SCR format have legit names to encourage users to download the file. Often names like "roadmap", "whitepaper" or "price prediction" are used, which could be issued of the official team, but they aren’t official, they are from scammers. These SCR files contain only malware and should never be downloaded.

Never download such files!

The unmoderated functions of Telegram are on the one hand very positive for all users, but can also be abused from scammers, which exploit this mercilessly. Therefore, it’s always best to avoid downloading any suspicious files via Telegram in general.

Please note and be careful!

That means everywhere that involved cryptocurrency is not safe or you can't trust anyone that you didn't known or met in personal. Some sites that has escrow or called as mid-man that will be taking care of a trade from both parties that are trading scammed both the seller and buyer. Trust Yourself, Trust No one until it's proven safe.

It's always in one's best interest not to follow any link,or download any untrusted or suspicious link..At best never open any link sent by anyone who's not an admin of the particular group on the telegram channel..
Scammers are really at it with this method recently, and this malwares will eat into your Device and hand your informations over to them

This is why I don't join such telegram groups with unknown people. And that's suspicious enough not to download files that contains ".scr" and any other unfamiliar file extension. Thanks for sharing this for the sake of most.

Trading is different from downloading unwanted files. In trading, you can choose to whom you can trade unlike in downloading unfamiliar files, once it is on your PC it can react quickly and do something bad to your local files and even touch your unsecured wallets.

Well firstly it's rare for such message to be posted on a public group and the admin leaves it on the wall for a very long time also it's very unwise of individuals to follow any link that's not put out by administrator

It only takes a slipt second for someone to either knowingly or unknowingly click on the link, and download such malwares unknowingly at least before such links are removed by the legit group admins,if it's even in a very busy/active group, the admins could miss the message..
it's very unwise of individuals to follow any link that's not put out by administrator
According to the OP the scammers are actually using falsified telegram usernames synonymous to that of the group administrators,i think it'll be important group admins scrutinize username of their members, and request a change if one is in guise of an admin

One safe precautions not prevent walware file scam or virus is to be wary of entering links sent by suspicious individuals and always have a second security back ups to prevent them from gaining access to your device if your first line of defense is bridged

There are a lot of scams in crypto, we have to try to avoid those things we are not familiar with, fake websites, fake links, fake telegram members, being cheated often because of ignorance and greed.

Thank you! We should pay more attention to this type of scam. But how does it work  ? I mean this is an EXE file  that automatically runs after you download this  ?

I would correct that phrase. Its always best to avoid downloading any suspicious files in general.
Downloading and running files on PC is high risk business. You should do that only from official websites and only if you REALLY need it. Nothing else if you want to keep your PC secure.

Well, the OP is about Telegram malware.
However, I think it should be common sense to avoid such downloads of suspicious files in general, don't matter if they are offered on Telegram or a website.

Yes, you are right the OP is about telegram but velkro's point is to never download suspicious files in general meaning everywhere whether it's telegram, facebook and other sites or app that gives link to a file or other things mentioned in the link. Downloading files anywhere is not safe.

Of course, it is never safe to download any suspicous files as I said before  ;)
I never said it would be safe on other platforms. But Telegram is used by scammers very often recently, not only for malware files, also fake accounts acting as official admins of ICOs and request users to send money.
