Title: Merit source question
Post by: Onepostacc on November 25, 2018, 06:54:46 PM
From where source merits are comming? Who is my source?
How many merits i get every month as a merit source? Is that number always the same?
Is it normal to get 10 source merit every 30 days?

Seems like you have asked random questions, knowing nothing at all however read the following (if it's interesting then go to the main topic and read the full)...
If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

I hope you find your answers.

Source merits are automatically generated through an algorithm. The amount of sources merit are not fixed. Currently, the maximum source merit can be generated is-22045 with an average of 185. Some may get 10 and some may get more than 200 or even more.
For your info, there are 119 merit sources now. The list can be found here- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4523027

Does it mean i could get more than 10 next month?

Not everyone can be merit source. Check what mdayonliner quoted earlier. Merit sources are implemented by theymos. You can apply for becoming merit source if you think you are "somewhat established member."
If everyone became merit source or get merit/smerit after a certain time, the system would not be introduced.

You have to earn merit. You can earn through posting some quality posts. For each 2 merits you earn, you will get 1 sMerit to spend. And merit sources get sMerit not merit.

#Update
I have asked what and you replied what?
I have replied what you should know. First learn what merit source is, later ask question.

You're not a merit source yet, neither do you look to be on your way to being one..
It doesn't stop you from applying, but the odds are 100% you won't be chosen as a merit source..
Start of by being a good member of the forum, and earn merits through your contributions, that way you earn merits and hence Smerits,as for every merit you earn you received 0.5 Smerit

And through that means you'll be able to merit quality posts you come across, without even being a merit source

@OP

smerits are/were obtained in 3 ways. Having smerits is what allows you to give merit to someone else.

1.) Everyone who had an account when the merit system went into effect were given smerits based on their rank/recent activity.
2.) There are currently 119 accounts that are given smerit to distribute that replenishes 30 days after a one of their "source merits" were given out.
3.) For every 2 merits someone earns, they get 1 smerit that can be used to reward someone else.

The case that applies to your account is number 3.

Are you even a merit source? Most likely not, so your questions don't make sense.

2.) There are currently 199 accounts that are given smerit to distribute that replenishes 30 days after a one of their "source merits" were given out.

119

199? I think it's typo.

I am.

Then please refer to the PM you received from theymos. It explains how it works.

Actually, if you are a merit source, you can go here and it will explain it all better than I did.
 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit

Quote
You are a merit source. The next xx merit you spend will come from your source rather than your sMerit balance. Merit spent from your source will come back in 30 days. Unused source merit is wasted. It is not allowed for merit sources to sell their merit.

How they are generated?
AFAIK, it depends on theymos. If you spend your source merit on quality post and theymos find you trustworthy, he may give you more sMerit.

It doesn't, theymos said I am merit source and if I was already source, my monthly source merit was increased. Relax man, i am curious.

Ok, I'll try to answer your questions then:

From where source merits are comming?

Created out if thin air.

Who is my source?

No one - see above.

How many merits i get every month as a merit source? Is that number always the same?

It's usually the same but theymos can reduce or increase the number depending on how well you spend them.

Go to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit and count how many you spent in the last 30 days and add any remaining source sMerits. That should be your monthly allocation, but if you spent any earned sMerits you need to subtract them.

Is it normal to get 10 source merit every 30 days?

The average is ~200 so some sources get more and some get less. 10 seems like it's on the low side.

Also read what bones261 posted above. You're not getting source sMerits on a certain date every month but rather the source sMerits you spent will come back 30 days later. So make sure to spend them all otherwise you won't get new ones.

Only I am suspecting the account is alt of someone. This thread really is not belongs to meta (IMO), most likely supposed to be move on Help & Beginner. I don't think OP has knowledge about merit. But his question about merit source. OP just joined forum today and this is his first post. Wondering why his first post about merit source even he don't have knowledge about hoe work merit system.

Merit source appointed by directly admin. Merit sources aren't assign for any special member. They are able to distribute all over forum.

You are not merit source yet so no question how many merit you will receive. You have to earn now.

Is it normal to get 10 source merit every 30 days?
This is valid question as well so no answer. But you will receive unlimited merit if you make high quality post.

I suspect the OP wants to keep his anonymity. Probably to avoid being pestered by merit beggars. Unfortunately, as time progresses, the OP will be outed because it will become apparent that he/she is awarding many more merits that his/her airdropped and earned merit would otherwise allow. (Unless the OP is a really popular poster and is racking up the merits.) I used to have this apprehension. However, I have only received a couple of PMs begging for merit. So it really isn't that big of a deal for me.

Merit beggars are everywhere. I am not a source, and I received some pm already asking for merit... Just /ignore them

@suchmoon thanks, i guess I am way below average, probably my reason to get some info here. Dear @coolcryptovator I am aware how merit system works, I had few questions regarding source merits(Not merit sources) , as you can see. Merit source asking question about source merits.  ::)
