Title: Wallet address missing.
Post by: psjw4450 on March 09, 2014, 05:09:44 AM
I had my computer crash and before that I had backed up my wallet.dat.  I reloaded the new wallet on the new hard drive and it pulls up all my transactions except the ones after 12/30/13.  An address is also missing which had a decent amount of bitcoins on it.  I looked in the block chain and the coins are still there.  I tried a rescan multiple times with no result.  If anyone can help me with this I will be offering a 1.5 BTC reward.

Try importing the wallet into a blockchain.info wallet:

https://blockchain.info/wallet/import-wallet

Make sure your send your coins to a desktop wallet afterwards. bc.i is only good as a temporary wallet.

What's the date of your back up?

What's the date of your back up?

12/30/13.  The transaction was done with a new generated address on 1/17/14.

I tried this and blockchin.info keeps giving me an error.

How many new recieving addresses did you make between 12/30/13 and 1/17/14, and how many times did you send btc?  A rough estimate will do.

It is possible the you exceeded your backup's keypool.  Hopefully this is not the case.

Then this is not your problem, you need to have performed those actions over 100 times combined for this to have been an issue.

You're using bitcoin-qt correct?

If so is your wallet synced?

Try bitcoin-qt -rescan
What is the error blockchain.info gives you?
What are the addresses you have bitcoins at?  Does getaddressbyaccount show those addresses? (I've never used this command, so not sure if it will tell you anything useful)
Or can you use pywallet to list all the addresses that your wallet.dat contains private keys for?

This is what blockchain.info is showing after import attempt.  Wallet decrypter returned empty response.  Rescan has been tried several times.

In that case use pywallet to dump all the private keys and then import them into a new wallet.

This may be your problem:https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Key_pool (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Key_pool)

An address is used from the keypool every time you send btc or create a recieving address.  You only lose coins if you send btc or create a recieving address more than 100 times combined without backup up your wallet.  Hopefully you didn't do this and still have your private keys.

For more information on why this happens read the section under output about change:https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transactions (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transactions)

EDIT: I replied to the worng thread, sorry.

It seems the backup was created before those addresses were created.

I have tried everything.  It seems that this address is lost forever.  Thanks for your help.

It seems the backup was created before those addresses were created.

There should still be 100 unused addresses in the keypool.
