Better odds for some countries on Fairlay. (https://fairlay.com/market/miss-univers-2018-winner/?referral=99af2894-4052-4442-be06-3b6565ac3f44) Most notable South Africa which is @ 11.01 on Fairlay versus @ 4.5 on Nitrogen.

Interesting how the first 3 candidates are ranked up but the 3rd placer are different, in Nitrogensports its Miss Puerto Rico while in fairlay its Miss USA. The game changer here is their response on the Question and Answer portion, some of the crowd favorite fails on this portion. I guess Miss USA have the edge on this part.

I wouldn't say they are that good, but it's not about me, it's about what girl will be chosen by millions, and I think in that regard people are mistaken when they think that Miss South Africa and Miss Philippines have better chances to win than others. Below are my candidates

but it looks like no one is betting on them neither on nitrogensports nor on fairlay. Alright, we'll see. Looking forward for the results.

I agree that Miss Honduras is sooooo *.*

But fact is that all Caucasians people count as maybe 1 billion at most so that's not the first population taste that should be taken into account ^^

If you look back it seems that the latina type is probably the most successfull because it appeals both to caucasian, latinos and black people which makes a heck big part of the world.

I think Philipines will win again, last time the miss from that country was undoubtely the most awesome looking woman in the world.

If I were to bet I would bet same amount on the first two leading women with odd 4.5 each and chances will be high that I end up with a winning bet this year.

Yes the contestant from Philippines is such a beautiful woman. With regards to the looks she has the beauty that other contestants don't have but we should remember that this pageant is not just about beauty but also in brains. Of course their fate depends on how well they could deliver their answers in the question and answer portion.

Miss universe is very unpredictable because the final judgement will be base on the question and answer portion.
They maybe have the beauty but I don't see any value on that odds, in short not betting on the Philippines or South Africa.

Sorry, but I'm with m0glie on this. I'm all for engendering empowerment and deobjectification of women, but this Ms Universe competition has never been about more than beauty and popularity - despite all pretenses otherwise. I'll risk saying all the inappropriate things here haha.

Latina looks generally win this contest, which helps explain Philippine chances, and if any of you are from Southeast Asia, you might notice our country representatives are almost always with a Caucasian parent, and hardly speak with local dialects, with very Western accents... again reflecting the local perceptions that exotic foreignness is attractive.

I may have watched this with mild interest if my country's Ms World had participated as she's from my ethnic background, her cultural skill with a traditional music instrument and dance would have wowed audiences heh heh. As it is, our Ms Universe rep has no character, so I'm going to go with a safe winner from South America.

@DS. A lot of arbitrage opportunities thanks to Fairlay ;) Not willing to risk a bankroll though haha.

Well you haven't seen them answer questions yet right? Though probably all of them have beauty and brains, the early.favorites do get an advantage going into the pageant since people will be looking for them. And ms. Phil and SA are making noise this early.

Sportsbooks odds are calculated by professional oddsmakers.

Not for all events. For props like these, odds are based on volume. If a large number of people bet on South Africa to win on Nitrogen, the odds are going to go down to discourage people from adding more money so that Nitrogen doesn't take a huge loss if South Africa wins. Nitrogen odds usually start as Pinnacle odds with added juice (https://www.pinnacle.com/en/odds/specials/entertainment/miss-universe), and Pinnacle still has South Africa @ 11.01. Fairlay right now seems to be straight up Pinnacle odds.

Thats such a large gap, cant someone arbitrage that bet and win either way or I guess that might depend what level both lock at.    i wonder if its possible to lay this bet.

I can see they are both amazing looking.   I dont even like Asian women normally but she definitely looks a possible winner.    The feminist outrage on this must be off the scale, not just the contest but then betting on it, oh dear.     Its ideal for the bet industry because its impossible to say, attraction is totally a personal judgement and everyone has their own bias.    Almost nobody will be judging correctly or able to figure out the exact factors unless they earn a pretty penny already as a model talent scout or photographer perhaps but fairly close to random imo

Beauty is only about 50% of the eye in the beholder and the rest is pretty objective -- at a subconscious level people tend to be more attracted to succinct features of symmetry as they are a sign of strong, healthy genetics, as textbook as it sounds. But yeah its like if each country is already sending one of their best representatives (or best) of beauty, how does one pick out from among those which are the _most_ beautiful? Maybe it is just who can appeal the most to a worldwide audience, or more specifically to the judges tasked with the decision.

I remember betting on Miss Belgium a couple of years ago because she was smoking hot, but she was just a bit too blonde bombshell for the rest of the world.

Filipinas do have that global look because of a nice combination of heritages -- multiracial people tend to be subconsciously desirable because the mixing of genes is healthy for the species.

Exactly. That's why I think that Vanessa Villars has big chances to win the beauty pageant. Maybe she looks "too Caucasian" on that pic from the Miss Universe official site, but here's another picture of her which I think can be liked by people of all races:

https://i.imgur.com/Wkq46UW.png

Now it's really interesting, for the first time in my life probably, who will win this competition.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that odds are calculated automatically without any involvment of professional oddsmakers. The mechanism of calculation is a pretty simple one: the more people are betting on a particular contestant on a site, the lower the odds for her on this site, and vice versa. That's why the odds differ from site to site so much in some cases.

I don't really understand how they select a winner, everyone who goes there is obviously very pretty, otherwise they wouldn't be there. These people are the most beautiful people in their country for that year and they are competing against each other but all of them are incredibly pretty as it is, how do you select the most beautiful one among all of those.

For example miss Philippines seems like the biggest candidate but what makes her prettier than say miss Iceland ? Doesn't the preference has a play in this ? For example I would prefer someone with white skin and blonde hair and blue eyes, which is miss Iceland to me, however this doesn't mean she will be selected because there are judges on there, maybe judges prefer mixed race, wouldn't that automatically give Iceland worse chance ? I mean I give examples of Iceland and Philippines because one is not given any chance at all and the other seems favorite in a subjective race.

Didn't know people actually bet on Miss Universe :), For what it's worth Miss Congeniality is a pretty good movie.  I think the whole competition is a bit ridiculous though, on one hand women don't like being objectified but they have no problem being judged based on their looks in this contest...

It's was my first time to see this kind of gambling but if we the odds, the greater the value, it's difficult to predict the winner.
This is the example of combination crypto gambling industry that attract people to gamble on anything.

I'm expecting E-Sport gambling for crypto coming soon,right ?

Looks like the chance of Miss USA to win the title of Miss Universe is getting slim as she is now in hot waters for bashing another candidate for Miss Universe which is Miss Cambodia for her English skills. This will have an effect on the judges perception on her specially they are also graded on how they treat other Miss Universe candidate.

Right.Miss Congeniality will come naturally if you're truly a miss universe indeed.I guess miss Philippines has more chances to own the crown again because of her beauty and brain looks. And knowing that she topped already in the survey then it would not be hard for her to win in this pageant. After all,it's in the final round which will matter most, the question and answer portion.

I reckon where the gamblers bet their money makes the odds different from site to site, however, their starting odds are almost similar in the beginning because they are from professional oddsmakers or copied from other sportsbooks.

But for prop betting like the Miss Universe it is different and might be based only in volume. DarkStar_ explained it well.

Here's the most important part, highlights of the bikini catwalks:

Like they try to make miss Universe a bit classy and all, but in the end it's just one question:
What ass & tits do you prefer?

Rest is just useless talks.

Wrong, this is why most candidates that has the beauty falls off, because they cannot comprehend fast enough, it demands knowledge, because if you don't have that, then the judges won't pick you, its not a huge joke in the pageant, its a huge thing to have brains and at the same time being beautiful, so I think you are wrong to that my good sir.

Funny while I am stuck in traffic here in the Philippines you can hear the Jeepneys with their loud speakers on while driving listening to the live feed on the Miss Universe pageant. You can hear the people shouting with joy every time they hear Steve Harvey mention Miss Philippines, from top 20, top 10 to top 5 until the final 2 with Miss South Africa.

Top 3 on my list was South Africa, Philippines and Canada. Too bad Canada was dropped from the top 5. Surprised to see Miss Spain in the list of top 20.

Actually, beauty parlors or beauty salons are closed or not accepting customers during the pageant  ;D

Interesting that this is how I found out about it. I've lived in the Philippines for 8 months and the only thing I noticed was that the videoke was on at the apartment complex across the way extra early this morning, lol.
In behalf of the Filipino community I apologize for that behavior of our countrymen who did not think of others who plans to sleep while he/she is celebrating something. That incident can be reported to the local law enforcers because they only allow loud videokes up to 12 midnight. Nevertheless, not in all part of the country is like that.

In this case where a beauty pageant was won by a Filipina, expect a lot of cheerful Filipinos around the globe. We are always proud whenever a fellow Filipino is recognized.

its OK, it came on at like 10 AM and I usually sleep till 10:30, so no biggie. most of the time the videoke is off by like 10 PM or midnight... most of the time. I like to sing too but I usually do it in a KTV or a bar.

Called it! Not that my call was very brave. There are some exceptionally beautiful women here.
Congratulations man, I hope you were able to put a bet on your pick in the sportsbook in your signature, the odds is 5.8, that should bring pretty return.
Anyway, congratulations to the Philippines, South America was really good but Philippines was very smart, the answer was so genuine people watching surely felt it.

Looking at how miss Philippines answer her questions is no doubt she could grab the crown. Her confidence in answering the question is superb that it looks like it is already decided. Anyway, her gown makes her stand out among the top 5 contestants.

She looks totally stunning in all of the portions of the pageant and I think she did it with elegance, grace, and a wit of self-confidence in her, And I have seen that she'd enjoyed most of what she did and seeing when she is waiting on the ramp of the Catwalk that she is dancing while waiting for her turn, I have seen a total control and her confidence is really overflowing in her, It's really sad that I haven't made a bet on it though, But that is my thought about how Miss Philippines conquer the whole pageant.

Same as yours i did regret not to make bets even though i do have the feeling that this would be a back to back crown for PH on MS. Universe because i didnt have the chance or the vacant time
to put up some bets and now i have missed the chance on making profits.lol

Talking back on how Ms. Philippines handle herself and showoff on the pageant you can really see that she really outstands among others.

Congrats to all Filipinos around the world. The country was won another Miss Universe and I'm sure that all Filipinos are celebrating, LOL. 1st runner up goes to Miss South Africa, I guess the betting public is correct in their prediction. LOL.
Actually, beauty parlors or beauty salons are closed or not accepting customers during the pageant  ;D

They must be so proud hehehe. Meanwhile their president is doing summary killings because of his socalled war on drugs which we already know is only another way for politicians in power to collect money and have their campaigns funded.

Oh common dude, don't spoil the Filipinos having their second Miss U in the last 3-4 years  ;D. Yes, they're doing good in beauty contest. Catriona also made it in the top 5 of Miss World in 2016 if I'm not mistaken. But this time, she can't be denied she really shows confidence and already acted the winner even before the contest begin.

We don't know what they are doing but all we know is that a lot of Filipinos are celebrating.

I don't think we need to include the thing our president is doing, it is great that our delegate won Miss Universe and it makes me happier with a lot of us supporting her. A lot of memes and other things are being made out of these but it is not out of respect but out of happiness and well, funny way of applying Filipnos sense of humour.

The more happier we are if we bet on the Philippines, with that, we have money to spend for the celebration.
It's the favorite in betting sites and those who bet on her to win feel surely feel confident because of her beauty and brain, she really deserve the title and we deserve to cash out our winning bet.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

It's ironic that the question to Catriona Gray is about legalization of Marijuana. A few days ago, the President of the Philippines during his speech claims that he himself is a marijuana user to stay awake. The Malacanan Palace (home of the President) somewhat agreed about Catriona Gray's stand on legalization of Marijuana.

It will be really be ironic if the last questions would be something to do with state sponsored killings as the current Philippine administration have been suspecting of doing so since Duterte has taken office, LOL, but that's debatable.

I just had a P2P bet, didn't go directly on any sports betting, just like $20 friendly bet that Miss Philippines will take the Miss Universe crown and sure she did. Indeed not only is the Philippines celebrating, but the Internet itself is getting wild with her win. Just watch this one: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3Xb8zyBGf4). LMAO.

Yeah but he said he was just kidding about that... I mean, using marijuana to stay awake... If you've ever come near the stuff you know it doesn't exactly have that effect, at least not after the first hour. The government is seriously considering legalizing it for medicinal purposes which is a good step forward.

Funny thing is here in Angeles people still do shabu like its no big deal, like none of the extrajudicial killing stuff is going on elsewhere. I know that just possession of marijuana can be a 12 year prison sentence and that's enough to scare me straight!

Anyway, lets get back to how hot Catriona Gray is... Damn, she's fine as hell! Lol... Pia Wurzbach only came 3 years prior. Good for the Philippines to have 2 titles so close to each other.

Next Philippino-related gambling event: Pacquiao fight on January 19th. Money's on him. Wonder what the "line" is...

I didn't bet to this pageant sad for me :D . I'd know from the start that our Ms. Universe has the highest chance to win because of her background, her brain and her beauty. Most of us are watching even the celebrities from the Philippines are very happy with the win. I'm hoping for a back to back titles next year :D.

It is not your job to judge what our president do to our country and how he run businesses for the sake of his fellow countrymen. It's better to see drug related personnel's killed than those innocent ones. Anyway, we are out of topic in this discussion and of course we are so proud of Catriona also to our president.

I am still not sure how these winners were selected?

In my knowledge these people were selected based on the group of people then how they can name it as miss universe or Miss world or whatever the tittle is.This is privately run competition tho. :(

I still don't understand how people put odds on these type of things. Apparently it was already decided before even the show began. Couple of the contestants came back to their home country and called the organization a fraud and who will be selected was decided long beforehand.

I mean don't get me wrong the winner is a pretty lady but there was a lot of people who were pretty it is the miss universe all of them were pretty but deciding which one is prettier than the other is a quite subjective thing and knowing which one will win beforehand and even putting odds on something subjective looks shady as hell.

Judges definitely had something in return otherwise how the hell did everyone agreed with the sportbooks for something so subjective. At least it wouldn't have been known beforehand, the odds should have been equal for all of them to say the least.

There are lot of politics behind these competitions to be honest,if we do deep research about these competitions these were sponsored by corporate companies which produces lot of cosmetics and other consumer related products so they were making something hype like the most prettier lady even using their products by using the winner of the contest later in their commercials. In my knowledge the winners were selected by the companies who are willing to agree for all their terms and conditions.

Agreed, but this is not the same with every year's event. Because corporates have made a thinking that white skin is superior and black as inferior. People don't understated the politics and the bug market behind this. In such a way most of the time the winner will be a brown skinned or a black skinned. This time the winner is from Philippines, and it is a country which has got the white skinned people.

In any case, it is astonishing that the oddsmakers got their predictions very close to the top 10 winners and to get it consistently every year is very impressive. I reckon they would make better financial analysts than Tom Lee hehehe.

Good thing about miss universe betting are good looking girls, everything else is rigged. Anyway I gave you some merits for nice pictures, that`s all, I will never place a bet on any similar contest.

Its all politics, just girls are real, and most of them are really beautiful, I cant say which one is better looking, more handsome than others, I would love them all. I give a little advantage to blond girls, but its my thing, my taste, other than that when you take a look on girls that participate, I would easily marry any of those girls without double thinking.

The discussion is now turning to self speculation, self analysis and self political views. :)

All stuffs claimed are just based on what people hear and mostly a product of rumors. Yes it has chances but I will only believed if the information will come right directly from part of the organization's body.

Since the event is now over, OP can consider closing this thread now.
